Deep garnet and color with slight breaking edges. Nose of cherries, vanilla, and hence of tobacco. Lovely taste of being cherries, milk chocolate, leather, tar. and a rustic quality. Resolve tannins, bright fruit, and complementary acidity. A lovely wine drinking well and then it’s prime. Drink now and over the next 3 to 5 years.

In my tasting note from 2009 I stated this needed more time. In my last tasting note in 2017 I said, 'Its time!" Tonight, this wine has matured and improved with further aging and was better still, consistent with my recent tasting back in May of this year when I wrote below.
"Much better, smoother and more approachable than last tasting five years ago when I said it needs more time. Its time! Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, smooth polished forward aromatic black currant and black berry fruits give way to hint of nicely integrated oak turning to tones of minerality, black cherry and dark mocha chocolate with hints of anise and tobacco."
We drank half the bottle with dinner last night, and it was even better today with grilled tenderloin for our Sunday afternoon dinner! Its showing elegance and finesse and smooth polished texture with velvety tannins on the long finish. This is definitely as its apex in its fourteenth year!
The accounts of the demise of this wine are greatly exaggerated. Don't believe that window here on CT that says 3 years ago this was done! I mean, sure, time to drink up, but if you've saved this one for a bit, DO enjoy the secondary and tertiary flavors coming through, especially the Franc's rose petal and chocolate notes. This wine is certainly not the bar room brawler it probably was in it's youth (just looking at that picture of Urhiah on the label), but it's a proper gentleman now. Taking your hat and coat when you arrive and showing you a proper time all evening long, before calling you an Uber. Right?

Opened very astringent but mellowed over time. Definitely past peak but still enjoyable. My cork popped 3/4 way down also. Fruit lacking but still enjoyable with strip steak and Asian marinade chicken mixed grill. Spring valley has been very good. If they have maintained quality buy and enjoy more recent vintages.

I has been over 3 years since I last had this bottle. For those of you fortunate enough to have held on to them, congrats as this is drinking great. Dark smoky fruit with leather, tobacco and a little anise. Nicely strung together with nothing out of place or showy. Smooth, reserved, balanced and complex.

This showed fruity and soft but not complex or deep. Yet it was not oxidized or tired. Never has been my favorite vintage of Uriah. Previously scored 89-90 points. Not scored tonight.

This was a dark inky brooding blend with the 59% Merlot , Cabernet Franc and 3 Petit Verdot. This Bordeaux blend tasted very much like a Left bank from Graves, with smoky dark fruit, a bit of earthiness, tobacco, saddle leather and spice box. The tannins are still quite chewy, but pleasant and this finishes strong with good acidity and iron like minerals. A very nice wine. Still quite young. He did say that is some newer vintages they put a dollop of Syrah in the blend.

Loved this when I last 4 years ago. Now less sold (perhaps my tastes have changed?). Had with beef tenderloin. I got a lot of heat even after a good long decant. Fruit a bit muted and structure diminished leading to limited integration. Color fine, so not oxidized. Maybe past prime?

Second time I've had this wine in the past year and it's at a very nice drinking stage right now. A medium to full-bodied effort with mellowing fine tannins and good acidity. A slightly reticent nose of dark fruits. On the palate a nicely balanced wine with mellow dark fruit and developing a bit of of a rustic quality as it is in a peaking phase. Probably need to drink these up in the next year or two at the most. Very nice.

Purchased 4 bottles at Lucas for $20/each. Opened one for wine dinner in November but did not decant/air and only sampled about 3 oz pour. Rich Merlot nose with strawberry, dark cherry, cedar, bittersweet chocolate. Alcohol present (14.8%) but not in a bad way. Dark friuit and vanilla with soft tannins with beautiful, long finish. Can't wait to try the Frederick again in a more controlled setting. I love Washington wines.
After several hours, totally smooth and mellow but flavor holds up. Creamy.

This wine was received from tashNYC for the '11 CT SS game and drank 2 nights ago with good CT wine buddy neighborbill at a Christmas dinner at Lake Hickory CC. The bottle was not formally decanted but it was opened and was breathing for almost 4 hours before consumption and was adequately aired although an hour or two in the decanter would not hurt this wine at all. This is a very good wine, the first bottle of this wine and of this particular vintage we had was a little over two years ago and this wine has continued to improve. This is a right bank style bdx blend of primarily merlot, cab franc and petit verdot. The nose initially a little funky and this blew off very quickly with balanced oak, dark fruit and a hint of black currant. A big wine, in a great drinking window right now, almost inky black, very balanced and smooth with good mouth feel and overall very balanced acid / tannins / fruit and this has lots longer to go in the cellar. Very smooth and sophisticated on the palate with controlled but present oak, terroir, red cherry and the development of black pepper and a whiff of smoke on a long lingering pleasant aftertaste. A very good QPR wine at this average CT price point, would definitely recommend this and again a big thanks to tashNYC for kindly sharing a bottle of this with us.

A bzukaitis offering. Tasted against a 2007 Spring Valley Frederick. Both bdx styles with the Frederick being more cab and Uriah more Merlot. Both were very good wines, and while the Fredrick one out, the Uriah smooth Merlot characters made this wine very enjoyable.

Excellent and best on Day 2. Great wine to serve blind to people who fashion themselves as experts and have them guess where it's from. Supertuscan? Right bank? There has been some bottle variation in this case.

What a great, under the radar find, on sale for $44 retail locally. It seems to me that Washington state is a great poential source for value Bordeaux style blends if you stick to producers like Spring Valley Vineyard and Andrew Will. This wine rocked last night after an hour in the decantor. Profuse, lassic aromas of cigar box and dark fruit. The oak is well integrated. Focused and silky with minerally flavors of cherry, dark chocolat, anise and tobacco. This drinks much more like a $100 plus BDX. ALC is listed at 14.5% but doesn't seem apparent to me. Nice weight. Great, great nose! Ready to go but should hold for a while too. 53% Merlot, 36% Cab franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec.

Beautiful bottle of merlot-based wine No smoke, no mirrors, great balance. St. Emilion-inspired, although a bit higher alcohol/heat impact. If this was a right-banker it would sell for at least twice as much.

Not my cup of tea - rather heat filled, with a musty aroma - popped and let sit for about an hour and still didn't open - drinking more like an Australian shiraz bomb rather than a merlot blend - smooth it is not

last bottle of the three I bought. Drank one each in 2008, 2009 previously. Lovely floral nose of lavender, roses, anise and ripe sweet cherries. Palate bursts with fruit, anise, cherries. Plenty of grip and a hint of pepper. Really integrating nicely, but tannins are still pretty tight. I now wish I had waited a few more years, but this is drinking well now. Would pair well with a nice ribeye.

What a beautiful wine. Initially tannic and a touch closed, but with lots of red fruit (currants & cherry). Opened to reveal more fruits, some tar, spice & cedar. And a lovely nose. Really too young to drink (these are spectacular when aged), but delicious now. Great with our grilled fillet mignon.

Really perplexed about this wine. Popped and poured, consumed over 2 hour. Dark garnet color. Initially the nose was a big brooding mixture of black truffle, caramel, currant and anise. After a while the nose was lighter currant and oaky with a little bit of pepper. I loved the initial hit on the nose and literally smelled the wine on and off for 5 or 10 minutes before even trying a sip because I loved it so much. Taste at first was black cherry, tobacco, forest floor and licorice nicely balanced. Later I was getting more violet and less earthiness to it. So it evolved a lot over two hours. My question really comes down to should I drink my other bottle soon or hold onto it. All in all, quite a nice bottle of wine.

Very good wine. Deep red, nose more restrained than on release, elegant and showing dark fruits, plums, and liqorice. Smooth palate with dark fruit and spicy jalapeno and liqorice again. The wine is showing a lot of cab franc character - check the label, yep, 36% cab franc. med-long finish. Went great with the soy & ginger flank steak.

Decanted. Has restraint and a softness but by no means light. Black licorice, blueberry and blackberry notes. Subtle on the palate with balance and finish. Not to level of some Uriah's I've tasted but better than the last couple of tried.

Violet and laveder on the nose, battle with anise and carmelized peppers. Continuing to evolve on the table. Body is full but smooth. Very easy to drink. A light midpalate kick gives way to a long smooth finish. Certainly ready to drink tonight, and showing a touch of age, but no need to break out the Botox yet. Lots of personalty and enough fruit to go a bit longer. Not hot by modern standards, but every bit of it's 14.8% rating.

Opened for a home grilled T-bone. Ran thru Vinturi. Dense garnet. Dark cherry with big chocolate nose. Notes of soft leather, roses, and caramelized ... well I don't know what, but caramelized something. Full bodied, plush black cherry and black raspberry. Some nice St. Emilion character. This is my first Spring Valley Vineyard wine and I am feeling the love. Great stuff.

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates (MUSE): I have had this in the past, however I remember liking it better. This is a big boy. Rich and intense with gripping tannins. Lots of rich black fruits, black plum, cassis, black cherry compote. Pepper, cedar, chocolate. Slight tobacco on the finish. Acidity could be a little better balanced. This is a great wine.

This wine is outstanding. I never had this before and did not know if I should open it up and give it a try... or let it sit a year or 2. I decided to give it a go and was I happy I did. This wine was great from the moment it hit the glass. This is packed with fruit, balanced with perfect acidity and tannins making for a enjoyable long finish. The alcohol content may be a little high at this point but that did not detract me. This wine has a wonderful bouquet and flavors of cherries and vanilla. It has a huge mouth feel. It is concentrated and lush without being overbearing. This is a wine that compares to wines that are 2 to 3 times the price. I will buy more.

Really a surprisingly good wine enjoyed earlier today with Kim at Ruth's Chris steakhouse in the Charlotte Southpark area for the Charlotte Restaurant Week - a gutsy, spicy and very good merlot / cab franc / petit verdot Washington blend from Walla Walla ordered tonight in anticipation of the CT Walla Walla wine gathering in September of this year. Inky black, fine sediment, big wine with well balanced components and a long lingering aftertaste. Nose spicy and fruity with black currants and blackberrys, primary flavor profile of white developing into black pepper, dark stone fruit, red cherry and allspice.

Definitely needs some time - decant and let breathe. A bit harsh up front with cedar and tar overpowering black currant and black berry fruits - turns to vanilla with creme brulee burnt sugar on the long firm tannin filled finish.Still approachable and enjoyable - just not as smooth as the 03 or the 06.
An absolute steal at $30. Strong cool-weather notes of anise and foresty herbs, with raspberry and wood in the background. More intriguing and refined than most Bordeaux-style blends in the $30-$50 range. Solid balance, solid finish, and an amiable structure. Perfect foil for simple burgers on the grill. Wish I could find more of this wine at this price.

The makeup bottle. Binny's was nice enough to replace an earlier, corked bottle, no questions asked. And I'm glad they did because this was terrific. Huge fruit up front --the "Skittles Rainbow," to borrow Gary Vaynerchuck's phrase-- with just enough of a pleasing green herbal streak (parsley?) to balance it and keep it out of simple fruit bomb territory. Not overly complex, but a really soft, plush wine. Hedonistic for sure. But balanced enough to pair well with short ribs. No heat at all, despite generous alc %. Only quibble is that there isn't much evident structure or length to it. And I'm not sure how much upside there is here. But this is very enjoyable now and will certainly be for years, at least, I'd think. Purchased on closeout for $29.99 and that is a terrific value. Normal ask is $45-ish, which puts it in the same neighborhood as some better Washington wines like Cayuse and Betz and well north of similar-quality producers like Reininger and Tamarack, imo. But in Napa, for instance, $45 for this quality would be a very good buy. 91.

Popped and poured. Dark ruby. Loads of candied berry fruit upfront (mostly blueberry). This Right-Bank blend also offers lots of vanilla, raspberry, chocolate, and some definite green herbs going on in there someplace. Kinda floral, too. Complex wine. Nice fine-grained texture. Lots of tannic grip, as well. A lot to like here. But then the finish kicks in: Chalky, drying and cardboardy. Quite off putting, and (hopefully) a result of TCA or some other flaw. Night two: No doubt, this is corked: The nasty finish has taken over the entire palate.

A muted nose, as noted in previous notes - berries, a little vanilla, and interesting aromatics (wintergreen); rich, dark fruit flavors, with gobs of chocolate, a bit of vanilla, and that wintergreen note again; firm but supple tannins, and a lingering finish with black cherries at the very end. After two hours, it was really showing its stuff. It still could have used some more time.

Nose - big sweet chocolate, some hay & violates & just a hint of dirt. U can really smell the acids like the wine is from a cool climate. Some concentrated raspberry reduction. Getting a real chocolate raspberry tart, drizzled w/a raspberry licquor. It smells yummy!
Palate - almost bracing acids up front. The same chocolate raspberry thing goin on. Lots O flowers & some biting tannins on the finish but not 2 much. Its a really nice wine and follows the trend 4 me with many vintages of this wine, high concentration, nice earth & flowers but its missing the velvety mouthfeel and the acids are out of balance. Hard 2 score 4 me cuz I love this wine & the winery bout I guess I gotta give it 88pts cuz its just not quite outstanding w/the acids outta wack. I'm really struggling 2 find the right cellar time for this wine. I've had 00-05 over the last year & a half and they are all over the place!
It did definitely improve after 3 days on the counter w/notes of hay, chocolate, black berries & cherries but really tastes like its from yakima. _________________

Tasted blind. I am a huge fan of Uriah, but you have to tell the truth on a blind tasting. This had the typical Uriah bluberry and cream but just not with the concentration, depth or focus. I'm going to call this an off-night for Uriah and hold high hopes for the future.

Saturated dark ruby color, with a nose of black cherries and cassis. On the palate, supple, packed flavors of dusty plum, ripe berry, licorice, and especially fresh herb. I also get a faint note of salt lick from mid palate through the finish. Round tannins, with nice purity and depth. 59% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot.

nose: intoxicating and deep nose filled with black cherries, smoke, blackberries, and anise. Fruit is certainly present, but not in a super fruit bomb way. Big balance and lots of depth
taste: very rich and elegant with a lot of saavy providing smooth flavors of black cherry, smoke, blackberries, bits of leather, and a touch of anise
overall: a very beautiful and elegant wine that has a ton to offer. Smooth and rich with a pretty black cherry attack and blackberry+anise finish. The tannins are nice and plush and this will be singing in 5 years, but is very accessible right now

This will be much better in 2-3 years but it is enjoyable now too. Nose is somewhat muted but the fruit bursts forward on the palate and the finish has lots of grip and another burst of fruit. Chewy long finish. Will be stellar in a few years and last for a decade plus.

2008 Taste of Washington (Qwest Field Event Center, Seattle): Already enjoyed on several occasions. This is a particularly special, well made wine. I like this vintage of Uriah better than Frederick (unlike previous vintages). A wine worthy of a case purchase. One of the 3 or 4 favorites of the night with intense candied cherry, blackberry and some caramelized raspberry reduction. Viscous, chewy and mouth-staining. Tannic, but approachable young with enough decanting time. Outstanding!

Exceptionally smooth this Merlot based wine is what hedonistic wines aspire to be. Sexy, voluptuous, velvety and concentrated this one has developed and integrated its tannins so that only the fruity mouthfilling chewy deliciouness is there to be enjoyed.

OK folks, 2005 is shaping up to be one helluva vintage for Washington State, in case you haven't noticed. I'm typically a fan of the cabernet sauvignon dominated Spring Valley Frederick over the merlot heavy Uriah. Not this time! This 59% merlot, 36% cab., 5% petit verdot is thick, rich, dense, pure and a real pleasure. Young now and will without question improve with age. Terrific fruit dominated bouquet. Serious candied red fruits on the palate. Has the stuffing to cellar for a decade easily.

Beautiful aromatics of ripe red cherry, red plum, currants. The palate leans more towards black fruits, berries, plum, with a bitter chocolate, nice and toasty oak. This is well balanced with nice acidity and mild tannins. I think the aromatics are the highlight.

Lots of blue and black fruits all over this wine, from the nose to the palate. Bordering on bruising, the tannins are just soft enough, along with very ripe fruit, to make this open enough now to drink and enjoy. An extremely enjoyable bottle, full of fruit. 90-92

The 05 Spring Valley Uriah (Walla Walla Valley) had a medium fuchsia red with a bouquet that frankly I couldn't identify but found attractive although a little muted. The palate was tannic and then peppery with sweet currants and raspberries and once the tannins melted somewhat was smooth and promised an even smoother velvety hedonistic juice in a few years of bottle age. A real beauty in the making. 50+5+12+17+8=92

53% Merlot, 36% Cab franc, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec.

last bottle of the three I bought.

Color - a pretty ruby mixed w/a deep maroon.
_________________

nose: intoxicating and deep nose filled with black cherries, smoke, blackberries, and anise.

The 05 Spring Valley Uriah (Walla Walla Valley) had a medium fuchsia red with a bouquet that frankly I couldn't identify but found attractive although a little muted. A real beauty in the making.
