Syrah at Cabotte with the TWS North London Group (Cabotte, London): Deep dark to medium red. Smells a bit shiny if that is a thing, silken perhaps, some candyfloss element. So it is a bit of a surprise that the wine is much firmer on the palate than these initial hints of sweetness indicate. Like it's flightmate the Clape '96, it is an austere wine that has ages to go seemingly. I have struggled a bit with Jasmin. I know a lot of folks who just absolutely love their wines, but I often find myself a bit underwhelmed. I certainly can appreciate more subtle wines, but I also look for a certain precision and raciness in such wines.
So I was trying hard to appreciate this. This 2005 was one of the stronger Jasmin vintages I have ever tasted. Definitely a lot of stem, licorice and olive with a sprinkling of freshly tilled soil on the nose. Mmm, just a bit of campfire starts to creep in. It is a distinctive nose, especially the stem, and it was funky enough that my very first impression had me wondering if the wine was corked? That cleared out quickly enough though. Some Chambord elements start to bloom with aeration. The palate is very pure and subtle, incredibly mineral, medium weight, with clean red fruit. Silky, subtle tannins still present on a persistent finish, although it seems largely resolved.
This is definitely a wine of subtlety and precision. Enjoyable.

In a fit of socially-distanced fatalism, we opened this bottle on a Tuesday evening to accompany home made pizza, because what the hell. Bottle has been stored in cool cellar conditions since its release. As expected, this isn't a blockbuster wine: its charms are understated but considerable. Nose was arguably its best feature: deep, earthy fruit and a trace of smoked meat, seamless and beguiling. Medium garnet in the glass with a narrow amber rim, visibly middle-aged, with only a trace of sediment. On the palate the wine is light and beautifully balanced, with smooth tannins, gentle but firm acidity, and layers of well-integrated flavors, from high-toned cherry/berry to savory woodsy notes. In all, a still-lively wine that displays the subtle polish of some age. Years to go.

Deep ruby that lightens to a light pink rim. Almost perfect, classic Cote Rotie nose that mixes dark cherry, pepper, smoked meat and savory goodness. Medium bodied wine that seems mature and elegant. A bit of spicy oak makes a presence. To drink over the next 10 years. (93)

On the younger side, quite fresh with bracing acidity and still firm tannins, even after 2 hour decant. Mainly primary black fruit, with blackcherry and blackberry fruit. On the lighter side, with more freshness than anticipated, but tasty and well balanced.

Light cherry brick. Dark fruit, smoked ham and pepper are the elements in this classic Northern Rhône. Medium bodied and while still youthful, shows an integrated and complex personality. Not a blockbuster, but a wonderful wine that I think most people are underrating. Terrific today and for the next 10+ years. (93)

Decanted for 40 mins. Very nice right now, feeling young and vigorous. Good fruit on the nose with a bit of a meaty smell to it, some smoke. The palate was lively, with excellent fruit, good tannins, very tasty. This probably should have been left in the cellar for a few more years I think, nice now, but will be better.

Still good and holding on - no signs that it's at the end. That said, it's just good and I don't think it'll get much better. As much as I'd expect from a $35 rotie and nothing more.

Nose of red fruits, smoked meat, black pepper. Tight at first, but opened up wonderfully with a couple hours in decanter. Super fresh cherry, medium tannin, medium plus acidity. I don't pick up much oak influence in the nose or palate. Not big on mature secondary flavors, but the fresh red fruit and finish are pretty brilliant and has years left in it

Mixed WTDS at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. Nose shows herbe de provence, white pepper, black and blue fruit, some earth and wood. The palate is inky, herbal, roasted, black and blue fruited, glycerin, white pepper, and a fairly long finish. There is a some alcohol at play though. 90+pts.

PopnPour, tasted over 3 hrs -nearly opaque deep dark red, minimal bricking -reticent serious nose -med acidity, med weight with some sour dark fruit remnants with a wholesome earthiness and a hint of black pepper, med/med- tannins on respectably long finish -no longer fruit dominant but no significant mature elements either, will surely do well for several more years, this doesn't have the meaty funkiness of more traditional N. Rhones nor the over the top ripeness and oak of more modern producers but rather a subtle and somewhat somber profile

The high level of acidity makes it hard and quite austere, partly relieved by some ripe tannins. Overall the impression is of a wine that is tight and unyeilding. As has been noted by others, it really needs a lot of air, and the next day a more mellow and approachable wine emerges. It's still not a great Côte-Rôtie, but at least it's one that can be enjoyed. g

Disappointed in this wine -- maybe it needs more time. Nose is of cassis and fruit, new leather, licorice--a nice bouquet. Feels tight and quite light bodied in the mouth. Taste is tart, tight, but structure doesn't seem balanced. Not much finish. High alcohol. After an hour of breathing, nose is sweeter, caramel and cinnamon, but taste wasn't improved much. Selling at a reasonable price around here ($30) -- maybe because no one's too fond of it? While the nose is suggestive, it doesn't deliver in the mouth or finish. Possible that it needs more aging, but I suspect maybe this is not a terribly good Cote Rotie. I would certainly not think it is proper at this age. Will open the second bottle in 3+ years and see.

Almost three years since my last bottle, and this wine is still not ready. Needs more time to absorb its oak. Although the oak is not as glossy/creamy as I recall, it's still pretty dominant. Try again in 3 to 5 years.

Bizarre bottle; almost seemed a little corked but the fruit was not cut off, could have been intense minerality that dominated the wine, but I'm just not sure; some red and blue fruit with high acid, classic velvety syrah mouthfeel, Burgundian style, could this be a dumb '05?

Decanted for four hours. Bright ruby red colour with slight brick red tone on the rim. On the nose this is very fragrant, young and mid-intensive. Red fruit like raspberry and strawberry. Elegant and somehow burgundian in style. The palate is mid-weight and acidic with red fruits from the nose. It's acidic but also elegant and linear. Quite friendly tannins already. Longish aftertaste with peppery flavours. Overall very elegant and sophisticated wine but still a youngster. Had it with elk stew and that was very good combination - the wine, in particular, gained a whole new level of body and richness and flavour.

Still young and a bit acidic. Other than that a very typical Syrah, good depth and spiciness, smooth and ripe tannins give a nicebalance with the medium body and tobacco / smoky notes. Nothing spectacular, i look forward to the next bottle in 4 or 5 years.

This was disappointing. Possibly too young or in an awkward phase or maybe just an off bottle. Very austere. There were subtle hints of fruit but tannins and hints of wood dominate. Didn't have the classic North Rhone syrah flavours jumping out at me. Tried over 3 days with no noticeable improvement. I have some more and will give it another chance after it has had more time.

Decanted for 30 minutes and at 60 degrees. Dulling ruby color, opaque center and showing some rim variation and medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is showing moderate intensity and a closed aromatic profile. Sweet, black cherry nose when volatilized but the aromatics favor, roasted meat, pepper and spice. Some citrus blossom, bay leaf and violet as well. The wine is showing a lot of wood aromas at this stage. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium weight, with non-fruit flavors of cedar, sandalwood and freshly butchered beef. Tannins are moderate and integrated, alcohol is medium, acidity is bright and lasting. Herbal notes of bay leaf and lemon verbena linger on the finish. Paired with Prather Ranch Heritage Pork rib Roast.

I can see good potential here, but it needs a lot more time to come together. Right now, the oak is pretty dominant - surprising, I think, in comparison to past Jasmin vintages, but J tells me that Jasmin does two bottlings, so this might have been a second release and saw more time in barrel. The fruit is pretty impressive, plums and black raspberry, with a vibrant, juicy acidity that's like a taut, pulsing backbone carrying this wine. The mouthfeel is still pretty young and plush and thick, but the palate itself is well-defined and well proportioned. Give it 5 years in the cellar and I think we'll have a good Cote Rotie.

Decanted for 90 minutes before tasting. Tight but put on weight and opened up after a couple hours.Suggest decant even longer 3-6 hours, I'm thinking. Nice fresh dark fruit and earthy aromas. The palate is very youthfully fresh & elegant but tight. With time gained weight, and displayed nice black raspberry, spice & stony flavors. Needs time but the balance, purity, fruit, and length are there. Great value here!

Very good wine but much too young! Decanted it 2 hours. The nose is still discreet, the mouth smooth and fruity, and the finish a bit short. This wine needs 5-10 years more to develop the real qualities of a Côte-Rôtie, I think. Let's open it again in 2014 or 2019....

Tuesday Night $20-$35 Double Blind (Bin 75): See through crimson with lighter rim; vanilla, guava, cherry, strawberries and cream, slight vegetal note; darker fruit on the palate, rose, tart, cherry pit, meaty, soft and Burgundian; this was good but I've seen lots of bottle variation so far.

I was expecting more secondary flavors but the wine seemed one dimensional, almost asleep. Will wait a year to try again.

Just coming into a good place, but a ways to go still. Still rather tight tannin and subdued fruit. Tons of black peppercorn. Went great with Korean pancake at Odd Duck and even better in the company of Mr. Zinkgraf. Wish I had more of this one so I can see where it goes, and I think I know where I may be able to find some.

Still lots of black pepper on the palate. Some meatiness on the palate. Drinking great, more angular than plush and than fruitier.

Very dark purple, bright edge. Ripe black fruit jam. Full bodied, ripe black fruit, smooth, balanced long black fruit flavor. Balanced finish with tangy acid. Great fruit balance.

Red fruit, high acid, pepper, crisp bacon and smoke. Medium to light weight. Tannins still very present but smooth. Paired well with roast chicken on night one. Pumped air and had second half with lamb chops on night two. Minimal change, lost some fruit on second day. Very good wine, but not a great wine.

Almost three years since my last bottle, and this wine is still not ready. Needs more time to absorb its oak. Although the oak is not as glossy/creamy as I recall, it's still pretty dominant. Try again in 3 to 5 years.

Excellent. Pleine maturité mais peu certainement encore vieillir.
Belle syrah. Poivre framboise.

Bizarre bottle; almost seemed a little corked but the fruit was not cut off, could have been intense minerality that dominated the wine, but I'm just not sure; some red and blue fruit with high acid, classic velvety syrah mouthfeel, Burgundian style, could this be a dumb '05?

Ah yeah, exactly my type of Cote Rotie, in the red fruited Burgundian style. Cherries, iron, minerals. Great structure. Front end of the drinking window. Concentrated. Fantastic acidity. Love it.

Wine Education Service - Fine Wines from the Northern Rhône (LSE): Very complex, red and black fruits, spicy and meaty, some mineral notes.
Very ripe juicy fruit, light tannins, very soft, smooth and pretty long.

Relatively simplistic cote rotie and this point of its life. Nose was dominated by velvety cherry and light pepper.
