PNP. Cork was in pristine condition. Bright garnet color with a light amber edge. Sweet cherry notes with cigar box and light mocha. Ripe, juicy fruits, especially raspberry with cherry cola, white oak and beautifully blended quintessential CA cabernet flavors. Still drinking very youthfully showcasing incredible structure, integrated tannins and a vibrant palate. Loving this wine - kudos to Chuck Wagner and his team - they continually produce outstanding wines.
p.s. Spanish hash lettuce wraps.

PNP. Deep garnet color. Bright red raspberry, sweet red cherry, light plum hoisin, flint and Asian nuances. Great structured CA Cabernet with lovely layering effect. Definitely ready to get after.
p.s. sous vide then grilled chicken with kapusta, corn on the cob and asparagus.

90. This vintage has always been a little heavy on the black currant, black licorice. To me it’s a bit sappy and port-like now. It’s lost a touch of balance without the acidity but it’s where Caymie goes in it’s outer years. Drink up.

Decanted & filtered after a crumbly cork. Deep ruby red with sweet, ripe fruits and cassis. Hoisin, spices and black cherry. Lovely mouthfeel giving it a seamless palate with well integrated tannins. Starts to turn a little pruny after an hour or so. If you have it, we would drink it.
p.s. charcoal grilled prime ribeye with vegetable frittata and grilled asparagus.

Pretty dark garnet color with age at the edges. Dark candied black cherry with dried cherry notes. Spice and a bit of asphalt and hints of raisin. No tannins are super fine. Wine is integrated and balanced. This is a fun wine to drink. Cork was soft so be careful removing it.

What was meant to be a casual dinner with friends over homemade BLTs ended up turning into a full-blown wine dinner. . Still plenty of life left in this selection. Took about 30 minutes for the juice to stretch its legs but once it did everyone really enjoyed it. Medium-bodied with loads of Christmas spice cake, prunes, plums, molasses and cloves.

W roast chicken: Helen back from Florida for a few days. This was very good, great color and nose upon opening, still looked very young. Big nose. Onpalate typical Calfornia cab that was very well balanced. Good finish. It really dveeloped overtwo hours and turned very elegant vs the bold cab upon opening. Good wine but drink now, to make sure you keep enjoying it while good showing.

Has aged well and matured into a much more serious wine than when young and compared to recent vintages. Much darker and drier than when young. None of the sweet overly-rich style Caymus is known for. This bottle is not subtle but more restrained and layered than normal.

Allowed it to warm up and decant for 5 hours. Very nice. Glycerine and pine on the nose. Dark, no bricking. Dried figs and light chocolate. Nice finish. Still carrying some tannins. This will continue to age well for another 3-5.

94 Started out a little hot and thick, after an hour and a half just singing. Black currant and forest floor on the nose, pallet big, layered and vibrant, dark fruits, nice tannin/acidity balance. So, still plenty fruit with a maturing structure, An easy 5 years of plateau. Cellared since 11/04.

3-hour decant; full-bodied, rich, resolved with perfect dark fruit, cocoa and cassis elements. Arguably a bit one dimensional, but an elegant Napa Cabernet nonetheless.

WOTN. had this versus a 2002 Caymus, a 2007 Larkmead and a 1996 Clos du Marquis. This was darker fruit than the Caymus, but plenty generous, lush with more complex secondary flavors and an incredible 20+ second finish that belied its age. a very very appealing wine that is not showing its 15 years of age. the Caymus was 2nd place with plenty of bright fruit, very soft tannins and a finish that was shorter but still 10+ seconds. one of the best non Special selects i've had and also not showing its 14 years of age. Larkmead was a delicious napa cab that paired perfectly with a dark chocolate cake. nothing notably distinct about it, but it was very good. the 96 Clos Du Marquis was the disappointment. incredibly thin and as it opened, it really had no fruit, no finish and was quite past its prime - so disappointing, it almost makes me wonder if it was very good even in its prime!

Popped and poured, blackberry aromas, strong fruit forward flavors of kirsch liqueur that's typical of Caymus cabs; Light dusty tannins that were well integrated; medium to full body. Wine did not get better or worse with time (1-2 hours). Appears to be in mid-to-late drinking window with maybe 2-3 prime years left. Delicious. Drink now.

Typical Caymus profile of dark ripe fruit and spiciness. This has many years to go as it still drinks like young Caymus. Hefty body with velvety texture. Nice finish. Crowd pleaser. No harshness at all. Refined hedonism...

A little flat, which may just have meant it was a bit past its prime. Also showed some inconsistency throughout the bottle. Still tasted like a big cab should.

Dark and lush in color, even after 10 years in bottle. My first Caymus in years, had this one in my reserve since release. Nose is concentrated and fully extracted, with black berry, grape gum and alcohol. Palate is certainly still vibrant, and as expected, packed with lush red and black fruit, which is what stands out. Back end notes of oak and hint of evergreen, not much after that. Truth be told wines of this style are not for me at this point in my drinking "career". Very engineered and not reflective of true terroir in my opinion.

Had this, along with an Opus and a Quintessa from the same vintage, with Thanksgiving dinner (turkey and all the trimmings). This was the winner. Still a very pleasant level of fruit.

Dark red/purple. Popped, poured, sniffed to clear a badly corked 97 Pride Cab Sauvignon. Ahh, that is better. One hour later: Nose of good mature dark red fruit, some secondary vanilla, menthol, and pencil shavings. Balanced fruit in the mouth, ending with enough acidity and integrated tannins to enjoy with a braised duck breast and mushrooms prepared by my wife. The youth of this bottle surprised us.

This the first of two bottles gifted to me several years ago by a friend. Storage conditions are not an issue. I was mildly disappointed with this bottle. But, I was also mildly disappointed with my 2002 Justin Isosceles. I have yet to open any of our 2002 Insignia, Les Pavots, Hourglass, or Anderson's Conn Valley Reserve. I will hold off another year or two and "live in hope". This was decanted for 90 minutes before serving. The color was….. perfect. The first impression on the nose was…..alcohol. In the mouth, it was as expected….. big and full. The ripe fruit was there in spades, the acidity was good, and the tannins were round and not overpowering. But, in the finish, there was just too damn much alcohol (14.7%). Overall, it came off unfocused and lacking the complexity or class I expected. After another hour, it did start to come together somewhat but I am not convinced that more air or cellar time will give this a better showing. Going against the grain of most other notes, I can only score this bottle at 90 points.
The 2002 vintage from Napa continues to please and this is no exception. Full bodied, elegant with a very solid finish. Still maintaining a lot of fruit on the palate with nice complexities in the mid palate. I was expecting this to be more mature but it has plenty of years to go. Very enjoyable wine.

Saturated purple color. Black raspberries dominate the nose, with wet tobacco and vanilla aromas (secondary notes of sweet black licorice and bell pepper after time). Thick, rich and chewy on the palate (a little syrupy)- ripe, sweet dark and red fruits. Fresh acidity and long finish. Caymus lovers won't be disappointed.

Surprisingly fresh and youthful, with loads of fruit still dominating the palate. It's not particularly subtle, but it's not overwhelming either, having achieved a good balance that is neither too tart nor too flabby. This is a very enjoyable wine right now, but I've got two more bottles that I will sit on for a couple more years to see if there's anyplace up to go.

Oh so yummy. This is how CA cabernet show be made, voluptuous and well balanced. Creme de cassis jumps out the bottle and fill the room, also some dark chocolate and applewood. In the mouth the creamy goodness goes on and on but this is not one of those over oaked wines, in fact a good mount of dark fruits and spices accompanies the oak, also fresh roasted coffee beans. Finish lingers with velvety undertone.
$60 for a mass production is typically not my style but this wine blows me away. Can't wait to drink the Special Selction.
Remember you don't drink the label.

4 Decades of Grace Family Vineyards:IWFSC Napa Trip 5/10/2012 - 5/12/12 (Grace Family Vineyards, CA): 2002- Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignon- This is again a rich and concentrated wine. It is deep red almost to purple. The nose is full of dark fruit and spice, as well as loamy earth. The tannins are significant, but again soft enough for pleasurable current drinking. The bright acidity is again present, and lighten the brooding edges. The fruit and spice on the palate is a bit reticent, but leaves the impression that there is substantial concentration of flavor that with a few more years of bottle age with show forth beautifully. It is a well balanced and integrated wine that has a great life ahead of it.

We had an '02 and an '01 with a dinner of braised beef cheeks on root veggie puree. We opened both into decanters but then poured into glasses and swirled and tasted over the course of a couple of hours. The '01 was remarkably softer/preferable (more than just an extra year, we think it was also vintage characteristics) and was lovely from the start. The '02 exhibited richer fruit characteristics which were a bit startling when compared to the '01. But it opened well and settled down some. Deep red color and well integrated / balanced tannin. Still has considerable time.

This seems to be at the absolute peak of its drinking window. Big nose of dark fruits and some caramel. Rich dark fruit on the palate with well integrated oak on the midpalate and smooth tannins. Even with 10 years to mellow this is still pretty much of an in-your-face wine, but really enjoyable.

Very good nose right from the start. Dense dark red color. Concentrated fruit with plenty of cocoa and cassis flavors. Tannins are well integrated now. A lot of spices on the mouth. The wine is unapologetically California in style and does not even pretend to be something else. Plenty of life still on the wine.

This vintage is very dark in color. Almost black. The nose is very fragrant. Hints of cassis, raspberry, and coffee in mouth. Tannins are reserved. I would guess this vintage of Caymus is at its peak. I am sure that this wine still has a few years left of aging before it is over the hill. Hard to say it will get any better than it is right now. All in all, a great bottle of wine to drink with or without food.

Wow, beautiful colors and taste from this 02 magnum. Mouth coating and weighty with a lingering finish. Awesome first impressions yet subtle. Very compelling. Too bad wife drank most of my glass. I drank this bottle during the School Auction dinner at Ruby Hill. Very nice although it needed about 20 minutes to breath. Early on the wine had a slight green bell pepper flavor upfront. This went away and the wine had a nice balance of fruit and oak. It was Smooth as silk! I will give the wine a couple more years as the body and color were in real good shape.

How did this make it in my cellar this long? Boy am I glad it did. Wish I had more. Just slight bricking but otherwise beautiful purple and ruby hues. The nose is large in size but shooting notes of cocoa, camphor, dark berries, plums and baking spices. There is a little dust on the nose as well. The palate is full and coating with notes of cinnamon, baked stone fruits, and a little brown sugar. There is still a hint of oak here and there but it has mostly integrated. A great splash of acid makes the wine not feel heavy at all despite the large ammount of fruit. Long smooth finish with just a touch of alcohol at the very end. The SS I have will sleep for a while.

In a perfect spot right now. One could smell this wine all night and be happy -- aromas of chocolate, white pepper, leather, flowers, black cherry, currant, and smoke intermingle to produce something almost indescribable. Palate offers pure black cherry and blackberry, with a flinty counterpoint of mineral and rocks. Tannins reduced but still present. Good acidity. Great purity. Awesome.

Just delightful. Perfectly balanced right now. Yeah, I suppose it could use a little more complexity (no cigar box, no graphite, no forest floor, etc.), but it was just flat-out delicious. Very pronounced nose, reeking of.....Napa Cabernet. Medium body and a good finish. Tannins, fruit, oak, etc. in perfect balance right now. If anything, it's a fruitbomb. Will probably hold for several years, but I doubt that it will improve.

A nice Cali cab with rich extracted black cherry flavors. Thinning tannins on the finish. I'm not sure this has gained much in complexity over the years, but this continues to hold up well- I'd drink this up over the next couple of years.

Others liked this more than I did. At first, this was off-putting for me, with sharp notes of grilled meat and shoe polish. After an hour, this "bottle funk" gave way to lush, elegant notes of dark plum. Give this a few more years and/or plenty of decanting.

Singing right out of the bottle, this is right in its prime with luscious red and black fruits and cedary oak. Tannins quite resolved at this point, and the wine has almost a rich creaminess to it. Very low acid, with a little heat on the finish. Delicious, yet somewhat simple. To be honest, while the fruit was ample and the epitome of Napa, I was expecting much more complexity.

Not as great as I remembered it a few years ago. Still had the typical Cab aromas and flavor but didn't "wow" me as a $60 bottle of wine ought to. You be the judge on this one. I was looking for so much more but it didn't happen this time.

Deep in color, with an ever so slight amber hue coming. Cassis and red plum hit the nose, with some tobacco and cedar notes. Cherry, with mint and leather as it crosses the palate. Tannins still a little more gripping than I would have expected after 7 years. Finish is long and satisfying.

A pisted-off Caymus fan once again. Caymus was my favorite cali cab for the price range of this bottle. I was drinking this in ealier 90's for $30-$33 & stopped at the mind blowing 1994 (95pts WS) which I felt was under-rated. The 1995 doubled in price to $65 & has pretty much remained there since. I refussed to buy after that. Wagner cited he had to pay more to keep all the grape producers in contract. But at todays prices, it's back in line. Brings me to the 2002 I had last night. My first since the 1994 - guess I held a grudge for a while. Very dark & a little bordeaux like on the nose with green veggies, some cherries & candy (sugar). Taste-Cali fruit bomb. In which vintage since 1994 did Chuck Wagner go mad & start leaving the grapes on the vine way to long. Taste of fruit, candy & thank heavens some green veggie & tabacco came through to slightly cut down on the sugar/candy taste. Not much balance here because no acidity. Sugar has replaced that. 14.7% alcohol listed on bottle. I'm used to the 13% Caymus of earlier 90's & nothing better to pair up with a ribeye or T-bone. I consider myself somewhere in the middle of old-school & new-school with alcohol levels. I do not throw sticks at the new world fans, but I really think (at least with Caymus) you can get smooth & balanced with lower alcohol. I think you will find the wine to become a lot more food friendly. Keep the Hi-C & Skittles out of my Caymus Chuck! I can get that from Austriala at a much cheaper price. Grudge back on again & Rant Over.

Good flavor of red cherry and cedar on the palate. Decent and balanced finished. The second night, after being preserved, was much more balanced and open, but lost a little of the nose. I don't think this will get much better with more age, but would reccomend a popping the bottle for an hour or so the day before and then preserving over night. There was a significant improvement the second day.

Verticle tasting included 1996, 2002 and 2005 Napa Cab's. What is evident is the consistency and quality of Caymus wines. All were dringing well. The 1996 was slightly brown around the edge, the body was significantly lighter BUT the fruit in the bottle was good, the wine was soft and more approachable than the other two. The 1996 continued to get better as it was exposed. My first taste was 20 minutes after the bottle was open, my last was about 90 mintues afterwards. The 2002 had a similar taste profile and was very good after 20 minutes and had gotten better, it appeared to be the best of the three but after 90 minutes the 2005 was getting really close. The 2002 is at its peak the 2005 will get better from now through 2011. The 2002 was dark but the 2005 was inky dark with a little red on the edge. Both had some tanins (2005 significantly more)and were delicious.

Beautifull wine. Opened and tasted it, then drank the rest after three hours. It opened up nicely but not a major change from when it was corked. Spicy cigar box nose, smooth fruit and a nice long finish. Caymus seems to really get better with 6-7 years of bottle age. It was really good but I don't see it getting two much better.

Decanted for 1.25 hours based upon previous others notes. Was tight straight out f the bottle, but probably only needed a half hour decanting as the tanins faded to quickly for me. Was a very light wine with ceder and fruit, but I was expecting something a little more complex with a longer finish. Woud have probably been better with less decanting. Not lignt the aged Caymus SS' I've had. Definitely no reason to wait to drink.

started off ina weird place. Took about an hour+ to come around. Blackberries, currant, and some leather on the mid palate followed on by a tight tannic core. Not sure how much better this will get with age. Another good bottle but just have never really developed a love for Caymus or the SS

Decanted for 1.5 hours before enjoying with a standing rib roast dinner. Wine had wonderful nose, soft muted ruby color. It exhibited wonderful fruit characteristics, delicate tannics and overall wonderful drinkability. I don't have the skill set to discern specific tastes - and quite honestly, given the diversity of various raters, question a good number of those who say they do. But, I can tell the difference between $40 Ch. St. Jean and this wine. At 6 years, the tannins had relaxed considerably. I believe a few more years in my cellar would do the wine justice. However, nonetheless, I thought it was a very nice pour. If I had one more bottle, which I do not, I would wait.

Decanted for two hours before dinner. What a beautiful wine. The typical Caymus buttery oak was well integrated at this point and the nose was sweet blakberrys and cassis. More of the same on the pallat as the still fresh and juicy black fruits dominate in a long luxurios finish. There was plenty of acidic balance to make this wine go well with pork roast and potatos. The mouth feel on this wine is as smooth as silk. It didn't suck.

Vertical tasting 92, 97, 02 and 06. the range was chosen to provide perspective on how the wine ages over time. The years did vary but the wine maker and where the grapes come from have not changed. This compared to 92 and 97 had a more fruit and more body. I felt it was drinking at it's prime although no real oak finish as you get from a younger Caymus. Still has a few years left in it.

Popped and poured, notes after about an hour of air. Plummy color, with a little rust on the edges, showing another year of age since the last bottle. Nose dominated by oak and dark cherries, with some nail polish. Rich on the palate, but not particularly complex, with dark cherries and creamy oak. Tannins whisper a bit on the finish, which lasts quite awhile with a little pepper kicking in. As before, I think this is a solid performer for the money, as long as you are going for a classic California cab with lots of oak. Holding up fine, although tannins have receded, so I'd drink this in the next couple years. 5+12+16+7.

My favorite bottle of wine to date. Perfectly cellared by my uncle (Eurocave), opened 4th of July weekend. It was several months ago, but it deserved the note. I don't know if Caymus's winemaking is just right up my alley, but this was an incredible bottle of wine. Thanks, Uncle Jim!

This was your run of the mill Cali cab. Very little distinction on anything in this wine. Drank like a $35-40 cab I can pick up anywhere. I was really impressed with a bottle over a year ago, but this lost all character. Good fruit and vanilla tones, but a straight forward, simplistic wine.

My first regular Caymus Cab in 10 years (last one was a 1991 Caymus which really was). I was a little disappointed -- perhaps this was too young but I didn't find it to be all that complex -- the Dehlinger '02 Cab in the tasting was far more preferable. Definitely some nice fruit that had mellowed somewhat -- medium dose of vanilla oak. Surprisingly short finish. I enjoyed it but was disappointed generally.

Popped and poured. Plummy purple color, showing a little bricking on the edges. On the nose, cassis, cocoa and oak, with a touch of smoke and tar. Palate follows with nice extraction, especially on the mid palate - black cherries, currants, oak and a little pepper. Very nicely integrated tannins show up on the medium to long finish, there's also an interesting sweetness. Solid California cab that won't disappoint, priced right for what it's bringing in terms of extraction and complexity. Drinking well right now, no reason to wait.

just an outstanding effort, and a qunitessential caymus. The special select gets all the press, but this 2002 Caymus is really first rate. Blackberry, a hint of cherry, and that wonderfully soft integrated tannins we love about caymus are in abundance. Its not as big as the special, but its every bit as nuanced, and it has the same lovely long finish. I only wish I had more.

(With WBD) Very well integrated black cherry and currant seamlessly mated with oak. This is drinking well now, but is still an infant. After 3 hours it got better, with the layers of flavor more discernable, but still so well together a nice piece of beef or lamb would have made made a nice compliment. Drank w/o food, only some crackers and crappy jack cheese.

Opened but not decanted. My palate is still not back to normal as I'm still feeling the effects of a cold, but what I could tell was that this had a sweet dark cherry with some smoke, still tight but with nice integrated tanins. Could use some decanting or could wait a couple of years. This was our WOTN against the other two (02 Caymus Cab, 02 Whitehall Lane Reserve, 01 Stags Leap Cab).

Very good experience. We decanted this wine for a little over an hour. Hint of chocolate. Strong finish and an enjoyable drink. We drank this bottle over about a 3 hour period of time not including time decanting. The last glass was just exceptoinal. 93+

Head to head with a Silver Oak '00 Alex, certainly an unfair comparison, at Ruth's Chris. A blowout, with the Caymus fetching twice the value in our opinion. Velvety goodness.

Almost Shiraz-like fruit on immediate taste after opening; I decanted it about 4 hours and heavy fruit smoothed out into silky smoke covered black fruit with a long finish and balanced tannins. I thought this would need more time in the cellar, but is drinking very well now. Definitely worthy for $59.00.

Nice dark ruby red color as the pour comes out. Nose is thick with some toasty oak and black fruits abound. As I did not decant this wine it started off a bit awkward, but after about 20-30 mins of air it begins to find its own in the glass. The wine turns extremely smooth from start to finish with loads of nice currant and a hint of cocoa. Very good wine, started with just this bottle but will purchase more.

This is a superior wine. I love it right from the bottle and after a few hours of decanting. Fills my whole mouth with flavour with great balance and a long finish. If you all really don't like it I will take it off your hands. I only have 16 left.

Good but not as tannic as the '01. More fruit. Not too complex. Color was great and finish was decent. It was an enjoyable wine but I expected more. Got some tar from it and coffee. Cindy liked it more than me.

I was a little disappointed in this wine. I tried it last weekend at a tasting. Medium bodied. Nice solid redish purple color. Notes of ripe berri and spice. However, the finish seemed overly bitter. Not sure if time will help. 88 points.

Decanted for 1 1/2 hours and it helped some. Tight on the nose as it was rather muted. Nice ripe fruit and spice, but didn't seemed all that layered or expressive. Will check back with this one in a couple of years.

I had this last night with dinner. I had ordered the 2001, but they only had this, so I tried it. Tried to give it 20-30 min decanted. A tight, not expansive nose. Quite young, tannins were rough. Dark berry, cassis, a little more fruit forward than expected. Will likely improve significantly over time. Not sure I will buy at $70/bottle.

Has aged well and matured into a much more serious wine than when young and compared to recent vintages. Much darker and drier than when young. None of the sweet overly-rich style Caymus is known for. This bottle is not subtle but more restrained and layered than normal.

WOTN. had this versus a 2002 Caymus, a 2007 Larkmead and a 1996 Clos du Marquis.

Not lignt the aged Caymus SS' I've had. Definitely no reason to wait to drink.

Very rich, just bordering on sappy. But very nice. Full Cab flavor. Drinking great in ’05.
