12/29/2023 6:43:00 PM - Thanks for the comment and confirmation Canoehead (love the image btw! Adding you as a fan and friend if you don't mind as I see we have a lot of wines in common; appreciate following your comments on common wines (and maybe exposure to a few new ones too) in the future.
5/12/2023 9:18:00 AM - Please check my comment one one of your notes.
5/12/2023 6:58:00 AM - I will write the location as a comment to one of your tasting notes, then delete it.
5/11/2023 11:47:00 PM - I thought of an easier way, Canoehead. Let me know when you are ready.
5/11/2023 11:39:00 PM - Read your message. Ready.
5/11/2023 3:13:00 PM - If you would like to post your email, anywhere, on this forum, here, under my profile, in the comments section of the Pontet-Canet, or anywhere else, I can send you the information on where I found it.
2/3/2023 10:17:00 AM - I have young children so I haven't been out much in the last decade, you might want to consult the internet for more up-to-date recommendations. Restaurants Le Pigeon and Canard also own the wine shop Flor so they are well stocked. Noble Rot should have good food and wine. Fillmore Trattoria is less than a km from you and across the street from Willamette Wine Storage where they keep some bottles stored. If you say you're a member of the wine storage they will give you a discount on their corkage fee. WWS has a tasting room and you never know what people are opening there. If you want to meet there before dinner I'd be happy to open a couple bottles. CT really needs a DM, but you can email me at Seth.Baldwin@gmail.com
12/7/2022 2:51:00 PM - Thanks for the wine tour info! I'll certainly check it out. I'm well overdue for a BDX trip!
10/9/2022 9:12:00 AM - Despite living in Portland I almost never drink Pinot Noir, so I'm afraid I'm not a direct source of information on where to start. I did some sleuthing on CT, and it suggests Evesham Wood, Goodfellow, Cameron, Colene Clemens, Big Table Farm, and Sun Break. Hopefully that helps a little. Cheers!
4/1/2022 4:47:00 PM - Alas, I appreciate the invitation, my friend. However, I am heading back east next week. Sounds like another epic tasting - I will read the reviews with envy.
12/10/2021 9:00:00 AM - Meeting for a glass is a great idea. Next time I head down to Victoria, I will let you know. Enjoy the holiday season!
12/5/2021 9:36:00 AM - So sorry for the delayed response CH. I haven't been on the CT site much as of late. Thanks for the invite! I look forward to hearing about the wines.
12/3/2021 8:01:00 AM - Hey John, my pleasure. By the way, you mention that you are in the Sherbrooke area also, may I suggest the following Restaurant which is Downtown Sherbrooke, it is a Bring Your Own Wine restaurant and the cuisine is amazing...opened nights only from Wednesday thru Sunday! WEB SITE: https://restaurantlasuite.com/menu/
12/2/2021 4:46:00 PM - Hello Canoehead, I highly recommend La Maison Boire. The menu is quite restreint as they focus on a few items that they masterly prepare. 5 or 6 first courses and 4-5 main courses usually. I would suggest that you consult the menu a week or so before you go to make sure that what they serve satisfies your tastes. If you can go at noon time, the prices are quite decent. Night time menu can run easilly in the 100-150$ per person including wine. They have a great wine list by the way, lots of nice Canadian selections, which you can also consult ON LINE. Their 5 service signature menu is out of this world but on the pricy side...but hey, if you can splurge a bit, its the way to go...you can possibly also have the wine pairing with this menu as they have an awesome sommelier, check with them ahead of time...if you want, I can check with them to see what they will have on hand and if they can do special asks that you might have when you are down here as I know the owner and the head waiter. Don't be shy! Look forward to hearing from you! Norm.
9/18/2021 8:49:00 PM - My daughter has started dance again, she will be dancing during the weekends. Thanks so much for the offer.
8/18/2021 3:33:00 PM - Hi Canoehead In response to the 2016 Sunrock Meritage I ordered it all directly from the winery. Price was 30.49 before taxes. I do believe they are sold out. As I noted in my tasting note I bought a bunch. I will bring you a bottle when we get together. Love it every time I drink it. Another wine I have enjoyed of late is from Blue Sky. The 2014 Syrah and Cab. Both getting perhaps a little past their prime but unlike my steak I do like my wine more to the well done side.
8/12/2021 8:27:00 PM - I look forward to the tasting notes!
8/10/2021 7:03:00 PM - Thanks so much Canoehead! The wife and I are booked that weekend, but thanks so much for the invite. Sounds like a great time. I have yet to meet Vino Loco and I see Addeatum is in CR. Killer and I attended some of the Everything Wine virtual tastings. I really enjoyed them. So it looks like you will have a full house. I look forward to seeing the line up.
8/10/2021 8:13:00 AM - Hi Canoehead - thank you for the invite, would love to attend.
6/10/2021 5:08:00 PM - Will likely leave town shortly after we get kicked out of our room. I am going to be down Friday. Is the Boom and batten convenient to you? If so perhaps we could meet at there in the mid-late afternoon. Really would like to put a face to all those wonderful TN's. I am also all for a Meritage slugfest. While 2015 maybe fine for BC and new World production, for some of my Fench selections it would certainly be considered infanticide.
6/9/2021 9:34:00 PM - Hey Canoehead - coming to Vic for the weekend. Wondering if we might meet for a glass on Sat early afternoon? Been so long since I have been I can't even suggest an appropriate venue. Let me know if your game and suggest a time and place.
6/2/2021 5:40:00 PM - Hey John, I am so sorry I missed your invite...(stupid spam folder) That sounded like a lot of fun - appreciate you thinking of me & the toast. You guys are the best! Yes, hopefully I can make it over this fall when everything reopens! Love what the BC is doing these days - really, anything from the Similkameen. Keep well, my friend.
4/30/2021 1:21:00 AM - Canoehead commented on your tasting note for 2016 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia Sassicaia. Canoehead wrote: "Great TN. You are definitely taking one for the team here. I rarely touch a Sass before 7+ years and the 2016 seems to be a long haul vintage that I had no confidence it would be drinkable at this time. How long did you decant for? I also appreciate the Rosetta Stone formatted note in two languages." Quite frankly, I have had a preference for very aged wines and tertiary aromas for a long time. However, I increasingly discover that 1) At a tertiary stage, wines increasingly resemble each other 2) the aging potential of some (especially New World, but also Spain, for example) still has its limits and 3) how incredibly beautiful wines can be in earlier stages. And sometimes it is very difficult to pass up a wine ;-). And this will also be a challenge with this Sassicaia .... ;-)
4/16/2021 12:45:00 PM - Thanks for the query On AW 2016 Ciel du Cheval. I have to confess I gave the bottles away as a thank you gift (it was that or the Sorella - kept the Sorella). I've been a long time AW fan and I've always felt they were great value, so I am confident the 2016 would be worth it. FYI fellow Canadian as well - living in Seattle now, but I'm familiar with the challenges of wine buying in Canada!
12/7/2020 2:20:00 PM - Happy Holidays to you as well, Canoehead! Bandreas
12/7/2020 12:07:00 PM - Thanks Canoehead! Normally I would say that 20 years bottle age for a VP should be enough to give it a try. However, my Fonseca experience tells me that - sometimes- an "exception confirms the rule". I have no experience with the 2000 vintage for ports, so I can't give you good advice there... I stopped buying VP's with the 1994 vintage which still seems to be young and which I expect to outlive me. Cheers to my heirs!
11/21/2020 7:47:00 AM - Did you get the 2016 Bodegas Juan Gil Jumilla 18 Meses locally and if so where and at what price. I would like to try it.
11/21/2020 7:42:00 AM - Further to my last message I tried the 2016 Produttori del Barbaresco last night. Inspired by you, I posted a tasting note. I believe it is likely what you expected.
11/9/2020 2:45:00 PM - I am a novice at communicating on this site and I realized that you may not have received my message as I posted on my own board. Let me know if you received the messages. Thanks
8/17/2020 7:26:00 PM - I will give you the heads up as well if I see anything deals worth buying. thanks
8/17/2020 1:05:00 PM - I use to follow "srh" but like you said, he does post copious notes. it's almost spam ;-). I have never had the pleasure of taking advantage of the EW Vintage Room sale. I will keep my eye's open, it's not easy when living in Nanaimo.
8/13/2020 11:13:00 AM - Just back from off-the-grid cabin.. GVWM is Grand Vin Wine Merchants in Olympia, WA - some of the best prices in PacNW. THey also warehouse your order until you're ready to pick it up. We also have friends in the region who cellar our wine for us - I'm missing ome of my babies right now! Vintage Wines in San Diego, CA - very good pricing as well and a staff member "srh" who reviews copious amounts of wine and posts TNs here on CT. I have the wine shipped to a friend nearby. Unwined in Edmonton, AB - sadly no longer in business. Has transitioned to a whisky/ey boutique. Had some great prices and run by a great team. In BC, we're cursed as you know by ridiculous distribution control and higher taxes. BC wines are the only category that are priced relatively fairly. I keep my eyes out for the the Everything Wine annual Vintages Room sale when prices are reduced materially and there is another 5% off for mixed cases. The only Island location is in Langford.
8/8/2020 10:15:00 AM - I see you have an order pending from a couple of stores I am not aware of. I am always struggling trying to find a good wine shop. Where are GVWM, Vintage Wines & Unwined located?
7/27/2020 2:33:00 PM - Thanks for the note, I will check out Save-On in Parkville next time I am up there.
8/22/2017 6:48:00 AM - Check out the disparity between Treve Ring's and Schreiner's ratings and notes of Tinhorn Creek Oldfield Series Syrah 2014. http://www.gismondionwine.com/tasting-notes/201708/tinhorn-creek-oldfield-reserve-syrah-2014/?note=26386&ref=notes&date=2017-08
8/10/2017 7:03:00 AM - Hi, I go for a hard bike ride with some guys on Tuesday and Thursdays, but that doesn't mean we couldn't meet, but it'd be 8 o'clock ish. My email is dvogler@hotmail.com You can send me a message there and we could exchange numbers. That way it might be easier to pin down a date! PS: I don't check email on my phone, so it'll be this afternoon when I check it.
8/5/2017 7:38:00 AM - Hi, Let's meet up this week. Stage one evening? Or Mesa Familiar across the road.
5/2/2017 8:39:00 PM - I responded to your message about meeting up sometime. Haven't heard back. Would you be interested in going to Stage one evening?
4/12/2017 6:39:00 PM - Hey Canoehead, just had a look at your cellar and it's incredible how many wines we have in common:) You have great tastes;)

Very good QPR. Impressive depth and breadth for only mid-$20s (on sale). VG weeknight red.

2020 Laughing Stock Vineyards Syrah
4/19/2024 - Canoehead Likes this wine: 91 Points
Pnpd - purple black opaque; sweet and spice aromatics with whiffs of alcohol. In the mouth this is a fleshy meaty beast. It has that cured meat component and cracked black pepper. Alcohol heat dissipated with time in the glass. Evolving from primary fruit. Ripe black cherry and black liquorice after some airtime. Medium plus finish. This should smooth out a little more. The refreshing acidity keeps the wine quenchable. I’d decant future bottles for one hour minimum.

2019 Double Diamond (Schrader) Cabernet Sauvignon
4/17/2024 - Canoehead Likes this wine: 93 Points
Decanted initially more to warm it up from its cellar chill. Massive sweet dark red fruit aroma with spice and vanilla. Mouth filling and warmth from the high abv of 15.5. Intense, concentrated but just this side of becoming flabby. Acidity is hanging in there.
