  • no decant, however one would benefit & accelerate accessibility. med garnet; this wine reflects its site, how I envision that part of coastal northern Sonoma - wild, coniferous woodland, pine needle, substantial & more gevrey-like; time in the decanter or glass required to show complexity, this was great w/steak.

butter & thyme-basted prime strip w/ cracked pepper; bacon & garlic - roasted gold potatoes

  • Prior bottle was just over 10 months ago (which was unfortunately probably flawed) and my notes were consistent with my bottle before that (December 2018). Red cherry, red berry, vanilla and earth notes on the nose. Medium bodied with rounded and open red cherry upfront, enhanced was slightly brighter red berry. Mid-body continues to show good depth as well as that slight touch of red raspberry. Backside has tart red cherry along with a very good blend of tannins, acidity and minerals. The balanced between the mid-body fruit and the finishing notes made for a harmonious wine. I would drink these over the next two years as I don't see it developing additional complexity through the middle and eventually the acidity and tart backside notes may fall out of balance. Considering how well its showing today, it's worth drinking at this stage to enjoy the current level.

  • Slight dull medium to medium dense red with some brick color.
Bruised fruit and a hint of first floor. Some tarry, glazed blue fruit. Vanilla and candy. Varietal but not fresh.
Reich fruit. Slight acidity. Full but lacks structure. Moderate weight but flat.
Reasonable weight but lacks freshness and style.

  • Prior bottle was just over 14 months ago and while it showed well, it was a clear step down from my prior two bottles. Nose continues to show red berry, red cherry, earth and light vanilla. Medium bodied with a same upfront combination of slightly brighter red berries and smooth red cherry. Where the wine seems to have fallen down is through the middle. The depth, nuance and elegance that the prior two bottles showed just wasn't there tonight. It felt a bit thinner than before and without the additional complexity. Backside shows tart red cherry and then finishes with earth, minerals and some vanilla. Tartness stuck out a little bit this time without the mid-body fruit to balance it.

Given what I experienced with my first two bottle, I suspect this wine was slightly corked. It wasn't bad or obvious; there was still fruit and in fact, much of the notes I recalled from my prior bottles. But the missing mid-body, the overall thinness and just a few off points here and there leads me to conclude probably but not definitively flawed. I will save my last bottle for Q1 2021.

  • Opened alongside Peay Savoy, also 2013. Pomarium is richer, deeper, more savory, with strong notes of pine and forest floor under a sour cherry core that turns a bit acerbic and woody on the finish. Still lots of tannin. Medium weight, but this has big, rustic flavors for a Pinot. Needs food, like a roast pork, to mellow it and bring out subtleties.

  • Prior bottle was nearly a year ago and my notes were virtually identical. Red berry and red cherry along with earth and vanilla notes on the nose. Medium bodied with smooth red cherry and brighter red berry upfront. Mid-body continues to show excellent depth, nuance and integration. Red raspberry notes are still there, but more integrated than previously. Backside shows tart red cherry, but the tartness is also much balanced and integrated than previously; more tied into the mid-body now. Finish shows mineral notes, earth and light vanilla notes. In general, I would say this wine has smoothed out some of the sharper edges so the various elements showed more harmoniousness. There's enough tartness/acidity and fine grained tannins to give this wine the structure to continue to improve while emphasizing the fruit rather than distracting from it. Next bottle for me will be Fall 2019.

  • Expressive and perfumed nose with flowers, pomegranate, red cherries, green tea and minerals. Elegant and harmonious palate. This has fruit, weight, intensity, structure, acidity ...., but nothing dominates, just very well balanced. Obviously skilful and sensible winemaking; lovely pinot.

  • Red berry, red cherry and solid floral/mineral notes on the nose. Opened about two hours ahead of time and drunk over an additional four. Medium bodied (13.5% ABV) with that bright, mineral backed red berry notes upfront, along with red cherry and even some raspberry through the middle. Mid-body is really impressive; silky and elegant with very good depth and then the tart, acidity based notes come in towards the back (cranberry and cherry) and tie the mid-body seamlessly into the finish which shows a really nice burst of minerals , acidity and lingering red fruit notes that lasts for some time. Very impressive overall, between the fruit complexity, contrasts, beautiful transitions and the effortless harmony this wine shows; very well done. This is a wine of nuance and elegance, rather than raw power. Should improve over the next year or two with several more years after that at this high level. I'll try my next bottle later this year as part of Pomarium 2009-2013 vertical.

  • Surprisingly burgundian in style. We expected a rich and spicy new world Pinot but had we had this blind we would have been fooled for a big of a modern burgundy. Had a bit of CO2 to begin on the palate but quickly went away. Red fruits, medium weight and with minerality. Good wine and easily a 91.

  • This was quite good and makes me question the decision to pass on the last offer or two after a couple bottles we didn't love. Mid weight, nice red fruit with just a hint of citrus perhaps. The finish is just a touch off maybe but that's a very minor quibble... and certainly finishes much better than the couple bottles that caused us to pause on our orders. Maybe I need to hit this latest offer in the name of further research :)

  • I'd love to re-visit this one in about five years. Great structure and minerality, but this needs time to unwind.

  • TTTG Blind (DB): Herbal, bright red fruit, some sweetness on the palate; some very approachable tannin. Clearly California, but nice acidity and sour fruit, silky, pretty.

  • Peay Vineyards and Littorai new releases (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): This i my favourite nose of the 2013 Peays that I've looked at; it's medicinal at it's core with wild raspberry and spicy, dark fruits. The palette has focussed minerals and layered acidity and there is a long finish where cherry is the main player.

  • IPOB in SF 3/16 - Quick Impressions: Shows notes of spice, rocky mineral, cherry, fig and black tea. Tangy and bright on the palate, with rich structure and silky elegance. Excellent.

  • Opened one of these way to early out of curiosity. This is some really nice stuff. Not much of a nose yet. Soft textured palate. Really opened up over an hour or two. Tart cherry, orange, and black tea on the palate. If you have several of these, there is certainly no harm in opening one up now. Has the potential to be a special wine in 5 years or so.
