We don’t not drink much CA Syrah anymore, and this was a nice change of pace. Richer and bigger than what we tend to drink now, this also has plenty of acidity to keep it lively. Some nice olive accents, too. We both enjoyed it.

A beautiful fragrant bottle (rose, violet, licorice). I took no formal notes, but this continued to open up during the course of 3 days. This has a good 5-8 (or more) years to go before REALLY hitting it on all cylinders, but there is no reason not to enjoy these now.

This was sensational. Have had it in the cellar for years, and it is drinking perfectly now. Love cofermented Syrah/Viognier, when they are done right, and this was done PERFECTLY. Smooth, plush tannins. Great spice. Nice fruit. Lots of complexity and layers of flavor. Bedrock never disappoints. We decanted for sediment. It does not need more air at this point in its life, so I wouldn't bother with a lengthy aeration, just enjoy the subtle evolution in the glass.

Decanted for 4+ hours. Heavy sediment in bottle. This wine is 94% Syrah co-fermented with 6% Viognier, 100% de-stemmed and aged in 35% new French oak for 15 months with only one racking. Aromas lean on the savory side but shows deep notes of fresh picked Marionberry and smashed blueberry before folding into scents of black licorice, aged meats, exotic spice, turned earth, black olive, toasted oak, vanilla and dried violets. The palate shows dense fruits of blackberry, plum and blueberry that evolve to reveal notes aged meats, kalamata olives, exotic spice, black licorice, toast, vanilla, oak, crushed dried violets and earth. The moderate tannins are fine and acidity structured. The moderate finish is meaty.

dark nose shows bramble, blueberry, blackberry, smoked meats, black pepper, smoke, plum, and other dark fruits and spices. palate shows much of the same, almost a dark fruit liqueur character, but also adds some black olive. tannins are well integrated, and while youthful, this is drinking well today.

PnD 1/2 of the bottle. Purple haze color - seriously dark dense and cloudy. Fig plums tar and bacon on the nose. Medium weight with silky tannins. Plum blueberry blackberry raspberry tar and violets on the palate. Lingering blue fruits and licorice on the finish. Ripe frsh complex and delicious.

PNP probably should have decanted it and waited awhile, but the moment was upon us. Nose of dark fruit some spice and tar. Just the faintest hint of barnyard. The wine is not filtered and cloudy; body had well integrated tannins and acid with dark fruit and long finish. Actually closed up a bit in the next hour for the second glass. This is a wonderful wine and will work well with food--i should wait a few years and definitely decant the next bottle.

Day two report as recommended by most reviewers. On day one some mineral and a distinct barnyard and tar were present on the nose. day two has revealed a more perfumed nose, savory spring flower smells ,not sweet , we still have some tar mixed with dark berry notes and some spice, most all the barnyard has retreated to the barn. On day one the fruit upon entry and especially in the mid palate punched me upside the head. WOW I was surprised based on other reviews . The tannins while present were integrated but in the background and took over with some nice grip as the fruit dissipated. Day two had me expecting the tannins to be playing hide and seek with bigger fruit in the mouth. I was wrong the tannin is ever present. this expectation was set by the fact i opened this bottle after a day two tasting of Mt Brave 2011 Cab (just got 3 bottles and being a Chris Carpenter (Lokoya, Cardinale) fan just had to try one over two nights. See my review of that wine.) My palate must have been desensitized to the Kick ranch tannins. Now on night two the wine enters the mouth and greets the palate with dark cherry and blueberry notes. there is a sweetness here that comes from a combination of fruit, glycerin, and tannins . My palate is not sophisticated enough to decipher the individual parts but let me say this all works well together. The tannins on day two tend to have me agree with other folk that this has some years ahead if you can wait that long. 3-5 yrs is where I might open my next bottle. (Yeah as if I have that kind of patience and room in the wine cellar)but this could go another 10 yrs.AS it ages it will throw significant sediment as the wine, while a nice dark garnet color is cloudy. The bottom line here is that Morgan always delivers and we can all have fun pulling the pieces apart and trying to figure them out but what does that really matter? This is one enjoyable wine now, whether it is day one with dark chocolate from the big island or day two with leftover Pizza, or if you have the patience and determination to wait a few more years, you will be rewarded at hat moment with a great experience. Drink up! toast Morgan and buy his wine if you are fortunate enough to be able to get it in any form. the bedrock wines are a special moment in time.Enjoy them!

I have found that Bedrock wines requires the following rule. Open, pour small taste. re-cork. put in fridge. drink next day. That exposure to air is vital to fully appreciate this wine. I like this wine a lot. I found the nose reminiscent of some St Joseph wines. violet, candied blackberry, anise. vibrant purple. highly aromatic. mid to full weight. Maybe not as powerful as some other more denser syrahs, but to me, this is more versatile. not feminine, not masculine - kind of right in the middle. The finish appears to be short at first, but there is a sneaky long streak of blackberry and minerals that linger on for quite some time. And there are those violets. So pretty. While I tend to have quite enough wines from California, I think I will always find a way to buy Bedrock.

I allowed this wine over four hours to decant based on prior experience and it needed every minute of it. The wine remained very cloudy - almost murky - through the entire evening. It actually paired well with Chili on a cold night because of its solid spice and pepper core - but I would be very hesitant to drink this by itself or paired with anything mild. I'm not sure it will improve with age but I would not expect it to decline for a couple of years. Pair correctly and open when ready!

At first PnP showed a restrained palate, but this beauty opened up after about 1.5 hours and really strutted its stuff after 5 hours. Drank over 5.5 hours. The gorgeous bouquet was the highlight of his bottling with its beguling floral aromas and notes of blueberry, plum, vanillin, iodine, & later bacon fat & spice. Concentrated fruit-forward palate with notes of dark fruit, meat, bacon, dark licorice and clove. Good mix of acidity adjoining fine chewy gritty tannins and a lush lingering finish.

Impressive. Intense bacon fat and dark fruit nose & palate, persistant on the long finish, with some well integrated oak kicking in. Great balance and dimension for such a big wine. I have no idea how long this wine can retain this balance, but it's sure a pleasure to drink now!

Stood up for a week and carefully decanted but still couldn't avoid some fine sediment. This showed similar to my last bottle but without the initial weirdness. Nice dark, ripe syrah fruit with decent acidity. Pretty straightforward and yummy with just a touch of heat that distracts.

PnP, cloudy opaque purple; nose of blueberry, vanilla and graham crackes; palate of coffee, boysenberry, solid tannins; a bit of notable alcohol. Probably could still use 3 to 5 years or a solid decant. Highly structured, good now, better with some age.

Decanted for sediment (lots). This was undrinkable at first, super ripe, volatile, tart and hot. We almost dumped it but after fifteen or twenty minutes in the glass it really settled down. Still, it showed more overtly sweet and tart fruit than our last two bottles and wasn't nearly as integrated. Some bottle variation in this wine I'm afraid, both in terms of sediment and flavor.

Poured through Vinturi and decanted approx. 1 hour ... Perennially my favorite of the Bedrock Syrahs, the 2010 Kick Ranch doesn't disappoint. This cloudy purple pour is rich without being heavy and fruit-forward without being cloying. Light on oak, it opens with brambles and cranberry, with a huge dose of pepper on the back end. As the spice recedes, there is smoke and a meaty grip that seems to define Morgan's Syrahs (and which I also really like). Well-structured and extremely complex, this is very good now, but I'm betting it only gets better as it ages, based on past Bedrock experience.

I'm not sure if my rating is somewhat conservative because this was too young. Dense, almost cloudy purple black. 1 hour decant was not enough as this is so big. Black and red fruit, white pepper, violets. Opened somewhat over the next 2 housr, but best leave it alone for several years.

XWiNE nailed this, its a wow wine, very big rich dense and lush, yet maintains wonderful balance and resoundingly classic Syrah. Black dark fruits, a bit tarry with white pepper, violets, menthol, and cream. A perfect wine to sit back and lowly suck down while watching the NFL playoffs. Not sure if aging this will make better or cause it to lose vibrant richness. Also, not for whimps.

Very deep, inky color. This is loaded with black fruit, some licorice, spice; big on the palate, very intense, with a tarry quality, and yet maintains a sense of elegance. Easy to drink for such a big wine, which I think speaks to its balance. Not really my style, but it's very, very well made and I can see why people like it.
Gamey, mixed dark red/black fruit, with a mineral backbone. Great syrah. Medium to full body, complemented by a well balanced finish. Plenty of age left in it.

Doing this note after retasting on the second day:
I like this, but it finishes a little hot. Primarily dark fruit, with I think a little too much anise flavor for me. Interesting because I'm not sure I've ever picked that flavor out as distinctly as I do here.
I did drink this way too young, so give it a few more years, or decant a few hours at least.

Glad to see my great impression from pickup day confirmed in this first bottle. Gorgeous perfume of blackberries, raspberries and flowers. I couldn't stop sniffing this. Medium bodied with low to medium acidity. Fresh blackberries and blueberries on the palate with floral notes woven through. Not much tannin, this is drinking really well right now.

Another outstanding wine from Morgan. Popped and poured. A little leaner than the '08. Fruit is black and blue with an interesting note of smokey bacon fat that blew off after some time in the glass. Too bad cause it was really appealing. Drinking quite nicely right now but if I had more, I'd give them a few more years.

Popped and poured. Immediately stunning was the bacon fat nose on this one with a deft supporting cast of blue and black berries. The more this is exposed to air, the bacon fat recedes and more fruit and sweet spices take over. On the palate, the blackberries were prominent. Overall, this one was not as plush or fruit-forward as the ’09 Kick Ranch but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Tasty paired with sausage, mushrooms, snap peas, herbs du provence and garlic. Viognier brought nice floral notes with syrah pepper and, my mom says it had a "kick to it." with its name kick ranch, makes sense. Mom's palette was right on. Try it, you'll like it.

Killed this upon receiving several shipments today, unable to help myself. I thought that the kick ranch would be a good choice based on both the notes below as well as my expoeriences with other producer's wines from this clos. Followed over two days.
Day one, pop and pour. Color: black, purple at the rim. Nose very forward, mostly currant and leather. Palate nice blue and purple fruit, some coffee, good forward acidity, not much in the way of tannin showing at this stage. A twinge of heat and a narrow mid palate are my only slight criticisms. Finish solid medium+/long-, rocks, sage, sweet smoke and bacon-fatty texture that outlasts everything else. Pretty good indeed! Balanced, fruity and approachable yet with more complexity and finer tannin than, say, the 'rock Sonoma coast. I like this the best of any Kick Ranch I have had so far, and OF COURSE I now regret not wishlisting some more of these. Let's put the other 2/3 bottle away for tomorrow.

A two hour decant really helped this young wine show it's stuff. Got to believe another two years will allow it to show even better. Happy to have a couple more of these in the cellar

Really nice fruit just a little too much heat on the back end for me right now.

Very consistent with my previous note. A wonderful syrah. I have been really enjoying bedrock syrahs lately.

Nice complexity and balance. 45 minutes for it to open up a little. Extracted and succulent!

Gamey, mixed dark red/black fruit, with a mineral backbone. Great syrah. Medium to full body, complemented by a well balanced finish. Plenty of age left in it.

Corked. As rockguit said, there was some nice fruit under the mustiness but definitely still flawed.

Corked! Too bad, cause there was some serious fruit underneath all the must. :(

Very fruit forward. Loads of ripe plum, black cherry cola and a hint of kirsch. There is a hint of cooked and dried fruit, yet the wine seems balanced. Light, silky tannins and plenty of acidity to keep it fresh. VERY enjoyable!

Popped and poured this with the Hudson. Most people liked the Hudson better but I enjoyed this more, definitely got the bacon fat notes other mention, thought this wine had more depth than the Hudson. No formal tasting notes. We have yet to have a bedrock wine that we I'd not love. Incredible Qpr.

Bedrock Pickup Tasting (Tantalus Winery, Sonoma, California): Rich deep garnet color with dark fruit, cocoa, and floral aromas. On the palate nice amplitude, refined, and structured with dark fruit, and a hint of vanilla flavors. Fruitier than the other wines tasted. Long finish.

Bedrock Pickup Day Tasting (Sonoma): Aromas and flavors of red and blue fruits and lavender. Seemed sweeter with a more fruit forward style than the other wines at the tastings. Soft and balanced. Medium finish.
