A lovely nose of sweet preserved lemon, slate, poached peach, Opal apple, and honeysuckle. Medium bodied with a plush, juicy acid of real precision. Flavors include lemon, tart pear, green apple, satsuma, and cranberry. This is quite good, and improves with a few hours of decanting. Just a bit of residual sugar. I imagine it's starting to open now and will be at its most expressive in five or so years.

Lovely coalesced aromas of Maraschino cherry, blackberry preserve, dried sage, and high quality sweet vermouth. The bouquet is decadent and concentrated. Full bodied, round, and plump with more weight around the edges than in the middle. Fruit-forward with just enough acid to stay afloat. Flavors include sweet black cherry, plum pudding, sweet oak, milk chocolate, and black pepper. Very tasty, a bit structurally monolithic. Drink now.

High-toned, red-fruited nose with wet soil and baking spice. Full bodied with round, lush tannin and modest, juicy acid. Seamless in the mouth, especially with extended aeration, it offers flavors of strawberry, blackberry, plum, sweet clay soil, cinnamon, and green pepper. Stylish now with a lot of decanting, I think it'll be best in 3-5 years.

Decanted for two hours. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, black plum, boysenberry, shaved dark chocolate, and dried herbs. Almost full bodied with a very elegant structure of smooth, polished, and sturdy tannins wrapped in shiny, juicy acid. There's a seamlessness to it that really impresses. The flavor profile is quite earthy with licorice, violet, allspice, and cracked earth. The red and black fruit is secondary right now, but not without a presence. As it goes into its fourth hour, the fruit develops a bit of welcomed sweetness. The structure makes it quite enjoyable right now, though I’d recommend a 4+ hour decant. I see significant upside development by sitting on this for at least six or seven years.

Decanted 1 hour. The nose is high toned and nicely crisp, featuring aromas of strawberry, red currant, salmon berry, untanned leather, and clay pot. Medium bodied, it has modest, slightly gritty tannin and vibrant acidity. It has a fresh, textural mouthfeel. Flavors include strawberry, super bright and a little tart red plum and rhubarb, graphite, green pepper, and oregano. This is delicious right now. A warm weather red, it could be served slightly chilled. Capitalize on the freshness, drink it soon.

Very personal and special story behind this bottle. Opened the day of Iran’s attack on Israel. The merlot is only a plurality of the blend but’s predominant in the wine. Aromas include dark cherry, black plum, licorice, and dried thyme. Medium bodied and fully resolved structurally: the tannin and acid are both modest in temperament and integrated. Flavors have a slightly salty tinge to them, and include black cherry juice, black currant, dried blueberry, baking spice, black pepper, cinnamon, and tar. This doesn’t show much spark or sweetness on the fruit, and I think it’s time to drink this up asap.

Popped and poured, drank with friends, no formal notes. Classic gamey-meaty profile. The fruit is definitely secondary savory notes in the profile, but it's holding on. Full bodied, soft palate. Fully developed and probably heading towards the start of its decline. Tasty now and suggest drinking up within the next 6-12 months.

The nose is quite bright, featuring aromas of buttered country white bread, flint, Key Lime pie, honey dew, and yuzu. Full bodied, it has significant mineral-driven acid that balances a nice fleshy, broad mouthfeel. The acid leads with slate and flint that transitions into flavors of yuzu, tangerine, salted kettle corn, oyster shell, and banana peel. Less primary than when I had this a number of years ago, the acid and minerality are more pronounced as the baby fat has been shed. This comes into balance real nicely with two hours of air. I wouldn’t call it better or worse, just different. This will have another couple of years left before it begins to decline, I believe. Recommend decanting.

Saturated black cherry on the nose along with blackberry, black currant, dried sage, licorice, and black pepper. Medium bodied and a smooth-ish mouthfeel with modest acid and a modest amount of fine grained tannin. It's pleasant enough but watery and a bit thin in the mid palate. Flavors include a briar patch of berries, tar, licorice, dried sage, green bell pepper, and black pepper. It's all fine and dandy, but lacks personality and any amount of special pop. The longer this sits out, the more watery it gets. Don't age any longer.

This offers absolutely delicious aromas of pure black and Bing cherries that go so deep for so long, they almost complete; I guess you can call plum, red currant, rosehip as well. Medium bodied, it has crisp and crunch acid and finely grained, densely packed tannin. Flavors include tart cherry, cranberry, red currant, dill, and clove. With extended air this fills out a bit on the palate and becomes stylistically like modern Burgundy. The added weight extends the depth of flavor.

The nose features orange blossom, chamomile, honeysuckle, canned peach and apricot, and passion fruit. This one is full bodied, softer and juicier than the standard sauvignon blanc, with a glycerin texture. A nice sweetness balances the acid, leading to a very pleasant structure. Flavors include white and yellow peaches, yellow grapefruit, green apple, Arizona Green Tea with Honey, and Indian spice. I imagine this might appeal to a broader range of palates than the non-Tee version. While it doesn’t give off classic New Zealand vibes, it has density, depth, and diversity that isn’t normally there. It’s quite good, though I’m not sure I’d want an entire bottle to myself. However, I’d love to share it with people.

Grapefruit, white peach, chamomile, honeysuckle, and lime headline the bouquet. Medium weighted on the palate, it has big acid and a slight textural grit. Flavors run gooseberry, pink grapefruit, flint, and white pepper. While weightier than most New Zealander sauvignon blanc, it doesn’t lack anything in the acid department where it’s linear, racy, and maybe even a little phenolic tart. Extend air does add a bit of fattiness to the wine that reduces the tartness.

The nose wafts loads of peach and apricot, plus lemon, honeysuckle, and cantaloupe. Full bodied, almost opulent fleshiness balances with cutting, textural acid, going from big and round on entry to sharp and linear on exit. Peach, tart Granny Smith Apple, elderflower, unripe almond, and lemon pith fill out the flavor profile. There’s just a clear juxtaposition between the rich juiciness of this wine and the slight tartness of the fruit. While it’s not terminal to the wine, this is one for the faint of heart to avoid.

4/2/2024 - goodvitis.com Likes this wine: 96 points

The dense nose is a little muted at this young age, which time will resolve. Right now there’s cherry sauce for days, a super intriguing collection of chocolate covered things like rose petal and orange rind, and tarragon. Nearly full bodied on the palate, the tannin and acid are both lush and align near-perfectly. If I had to fault the build of this wine, I’d hope for a little less plushness and half that reduction more of acid. If that balance were struck, I’d call this structurally perfect. Just on the sweet end of the spectrum flavor-wise, it has the kind of pinot typicity that this pinot lover craves. Red and black cherries and plums, a range of florals, orange zest, and faint iron minerality that avoids swerving into iodine. One of the best American pinots I’ve ever had, and it’s still five-plus years from its best. Ideally you’d buy at least three bottles: One to have now after a long decant, another in five years, and the final three to five years after that.

The bright, semi-tart nose offers Bing cherry, red plum, ruby red grapefruit, and baking spice. Medium bodied with smooth, mouth coating tannin and modest, fully integrated acid, the structure is remarkably unremarkable in that there’s real density, on-point balance, and a velvety mouthfeel – everything is just right, and none of it is accidental. Flavors include cherry, strawberry, beautiful violet, clay pot, and white pepper.

Cherry compote, red plum, red currant, moist soil, cinnamon, and rose potpourri feature on the sweet nose. Medium bodied, fairly dense finely grained tannin mixes with round, plush acid to formulate a nicely balanced, lithe structure. The flavor profile includes red cherry, red plum, red berry, green pepper, moist soil, and cassis. This is one to drink now with a 2 hour decant or give this year in the cellar. Easy to drink but far from simple.

My favorite wine of the lineup, the nose offers beautiful red and purple aromas including tart cherry, lilac, rhubarb, and cardamom. It’s medium body is quite smooth after some initial air. The acid is proportional to the weight and every so polished and juicy. The tannins are fine, smooth, and getting smoother around a fairly dense mid palate. This is the most structurally mature of the three, the most elegant, and the most delicate. Flavors include cherry, plum, currant, cassis, and pastel florals, while a big(ish) kick of baking spice develops over time. If you have to drink a 2022 Clarice now, this is the one, though give it three-plus hours in a decanter. Ideally age this for three or four years, and up to ten.

This has the earthiest nose on a Clarice that I can recall, with those elements slowly falling into balance with dark cherry, mountain strawberry, black plum, baking spice, and chocolate. It’s medium bodied with mostly polished, finely grained tannin and slightly crunch acid. It’s pretty seamless, and a bit thinner than the SLH. Flavors hit on Bing cherry, cranberry, licorice, clove, and black plum. They all get sweeter over time, although a rustic element remains. I don’t love it at this stage, but the potential it’s showing is significant. The brisk acid and gritty, medium density seem a better fit for consumption in five to ten years.

The nose offers a lot of red fruit, including cherry, strawberry, and plum, that start a tad bit tart and sweeten over time. Scorched earth and beet or clay pot round things out. There’s a lot of depth here waiting to unfurl. It’s medium bodied with a lot of finely grained tannin. The acid is bright and light at first with a stronger dose of tannin. All the parts are there structurally, but they’re a bit backwards at the moment. Flavors include red cherry, plum, currant, blood orange, graphite, clay, and a bit of oregano.

Tasted blind along with the 2019 and 2021. Much more muted on the nose than [the 2019]. Apricot, peach, not much to pick up on right now. Full bodied, more plush than [the 2019]. The acid is still quite strong, but more integrated and spread out. More sweetness than [the 2019] as well. Just more pleasant all-around.

Flavors are somewhat subdued like the nose, though more discernible. Apricot, peach pie, lime zest, slightly creamy. Stone/white pepper minerality.

With extended air it gets more acidity/citrusy on the finish, which is also where the minerality strengthens and becomes the last note. Developed more sweetness with time, and some melon and orchid.

On day 2 the nose is still muted. The flavor profile is a little sweeter – there’s some honeysuckle on it now – and a little floral and more orange, less stone fruit. The acid picks up throughout the experience, and tops out on the finish. It’s starting to show just a bit of nuttiness.

On day 3 the nose remains muted. Very similar to day 2, maybe a bit softer and rounder and lusher.

Tasted blind along with the 2021 and 2018. This has lovely apricot aromas, there’s a sweetness to the bouquet. Vanilla pod. The nose is quite rich and deep. Warm vintage? Orange marmalade. Bit of lemon-lime. Seems young.

Nearly full bodied. The acid hits quick and deep, it’s sharp. Texturally grippy core, juicy edges, tart bite. Very mouth coating. It mellows just slightly with extended air, though enough to make a difference.

Flavors include tart lemon and under ripe orange. White peach. Sharp. Leaves a somewhat sour finish, but not in a totally bad way. Very pithy in flavor on the finish, which goes for days. There’s a small amount of sweetness. Just like the structure, it mellows and meshes a bit with time.

This is quite sharp and compact, feels young and in need of a lot of time.

On day 2 it’s softer, more integrated, less tart, more sweet, just better and more pleasant all-around. The acid is robust and the defining feature of the structure and flavor. Going back to it after [the 2018], there’s more body developing. The more I taste this away from note taking, the more I like it.

On day 3 the nose hits some tropical notes. Structure hasn’t budged in terms of tightness, but the grippiness has faded into a more smooth mouthfeel. The flavors are a little more tropical today as well. Might be a touch of cooked vanilla.

Tasted blind along with the 2018 and 2019. Almost as muted as [the 2018] on the nose. Apricot, peach, cantaloupe, green almond.

Full-ish bodied. Round, glycerin, most integrated acid [of the three vintages]. Most balanced of the three. Acid ramps up over time in the mouth, and really comes in on the finish.

Flavors based on a generally green profile in terms of fruit ripeness. Most citrus-dominated of the three [vintages]: Lemon, lime pith, bitter melon, gooseberry. Lot of stone minerality, like licking lime juice off a slab of flinty rock.

With more time the nose developed a honeyed quality and the apricot turned dehydrated. Green almond gets a bit less green on the palate.

On day 2 the nose strength remains about the same. Shows the most even on flavors, and has developed some yellow fruit. Acid is more integrated and smooth than the other two, and folds in nicer on the finish. The flavor profile is a bit nondescript at the moment, but I think cellaring will help delineate the features.

Day 3, same comments as day 2. More acidic than [the 2018]. Showing more of a smoothing of complexity and delineation than the other two.

Birth year bottle pulled from the winery cellar and opened on the crush pad; thing never left home. Lots of dried herbs, mostly sage and thyme and marjoram, on the nose along with plump dehydrated cherry, black plum, cedar, menthol, and black pepper. Medium bodied, good acid and fine, coarse tannin are both well and good but cling to a precarious thin skeleton. The mid palate is effectively non-existent. Flavors include bitter cherry, black currant, black pepper, black tea, and orange rind potpourri. This would’ve been stellar ten years ago, but it’s still enjoyable now.

Popped and poured - if you open one of these do not decant, and drink quickly. Pulled directly from the winery's cellar and consumed a few hours later. Aromas include deep and sweet cherry and blackberry, as in super deep and beautifully sweet. It's on that compote level. There's wonderful cedar, heavily worn leather, and sweet baking spice. Full bodied and beautifully balanced. The acid is round and juicy while the tannins are super fine, refined, and offer just the right level of grip. The structure is (obviously) full mature, and quite elegant at this point. This is is what happens, apparently, to Smith-Madrone in a good vintage after 35 years in the cellar. There's life left, but absolutely no reason to wait. It's tertiary bliss. Incredible.
