Popped and poured in Baker & Cook cafe. Bottle was in excellent condition. Little information found online concerning this wine. Was truly surprised at how this wine performed. This is a good example of how aged Bordeaux should taste like. Clear, star bright, medium concentration, rubhy red. Charming perfumed fruity nose at the start. Very fine and elegant on the palate, showing creamy red fruits like cherries, strawberries and cranberries. Silky smooth, delicate intensity, good medium+ acidity (my pal said it was high), medium bodied. Underlying stony minerals. Hints of tobacco, milk chocolate and truffle on the finish. Slightly gripping tannins still present. Oak well integrated. No sediments. There's a Pinot Noir quality to it. This bottle was so easy to drink, we vanquished it in less than an hour. I think I hit jackpot, having procured 6 bottles! This vibrant wine is very alive and far better than the 1985 that I popped last week, which was dying. My rating: 93/100

Merlot Showdown - Guess the Grand Merlot? (Bistro 103): Popped this at Bistro 103 - "Grand Merlot Showdown" Blindtasting. Decanted this for 1 hours before serving. Sweet raspberries, red cherries, and cranberries on the floral nose initially. It evolved over 1 hour, displaying crayon, tobacco leaf, graphite, and hints of leather and earth dominating the nose. One of my friends noted "petroleum" at the initial whiff on the nose. Quite a laid back wine, elegant and classy on the palate, showing cranberries, red cherries, and fine tannins, and a nice spicy finish. Not heavy, quite crisp, medium+ acidity, and pairs well with food. Could not match up with the extremely showy Irvine's Grand Merlot 2005. However, on its own, I would say it's a classic Bordeaux wine from Pessage-Leognan that is holding up well. Of the 5 people at my table who voted, the La Tour Haut Brion received 1 out of 5 votes as their preferred wine.

Merlot Showdown - Guess the Grand Merlot? (Bistro 103): Popped this at Bistro 103 - "Grand Merlot Showdown" Blindtasting. I hyper-decanted this for 30 seconds before serving this - excellent move! A fruit bomb, blockbuster style wine. Intense floral perfumed nose, displaying scented wood / oak, dark red cherries, ripe red plums, beetroot, lavender, and raspberries. On the palate, very rich, sweet red berries, cassis, beetroot, hint of coconut and earth, creamy and full bodied, chewy tannins, yet not overpowering. Like Christmas minced pies! Clearly a showy wine that would stand out in any blind tasting. Won hands down against the 2002 La Tour Haut Brion. An outstanding wine. Of the 5 people at my table who voted, the Grand Merlot received 4 out of 5 votes as their preferred wine, with much praise and raves.

Popped this after work on a Friday evening with a colleague. On the nose, roasted nuts, apricots, slight floral (white flowers?), intense citrusy nose, hint of wet stony rocks. On the palate, acacia yellow honey, peaches, apricots, hint of orange, citrus notes, luscious, intense and bold, creamy, long sticky finish. Medium acidity. Could be more complex, and wished there was higher acidity.

7/1/2015 - Davyd Chong Likes this wine: 95 points

My dad popped this at Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon.

On the nose, intense sweet, roasted, earthy perfume nose laced with dried black raisins, prunes, dried flowery potpourri, figs, quite port-like.

On the palate, quite porty sweet, yet showing elegance and finesse, medium+ bodied, feathery silky tannins even though there is power; good restrain displayed. Raisins, figs, prunes, brown sugar, and cassis fill the palate. An amazingly balanced wine. Hint of coffee detected after 1.5 hours.

The vineyard is located on the uper hills in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, with sun exposure throughout the day, hence its given name "Postera".

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota Residence): Smells better than its tastes, notes of pencil lead and shavings, Bordeaux nose (?), black-inky colour, dense and chewy on the palate, feels youngish like a 7-10 year old wine. Detected a hint of leafiness, milk chocolate, dark cherries, and forest floor on the palate.

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota Residence): Quite fruity, also showing notes of pencil lead / graphite, pencil shavings, and some herbs. This is an elegant wine, displaying sweet fruits on the palate, definitely Cabernet dominant, and the acidity is still quite high despite its age. There is a lot of life left in this bottle. It has an obvious Bordeaux nose. Showing a hint of milk chocolate, oak, and blackcurrants on the palate. The tannins were silky and velvety. Not my favourite for the evening, and most of us were surprised that this was the Mouton! I felt that it was quite restrained, even after 2 hours in the decanter. Again, disappointed by a Mouton. Was shocked that I rated it 5th of the 6 wines in this flight.

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota Residence): Superbly floral on the nose, highly elegant wine, showing notes of graphite, pencil shavings, sweet blackcurrant, and dark cherries. Slightly dusty, French nose. Hint of earth. On the palate, quite fruity, tannic, and dry, ultra smooth, silky tannins, and a long finish. Still feels youthful and can be cellared long. It was the overall wine of the night, though it ranked 2nd of 6 wines on my list!

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota Residence): Sweet nose of vanilla bean, very dark black colour, licorice note, the nose is mind-blowing - sweet and creamy, not spicy, chewy and dense, milky tannins, like milk chocolate, high tannins yet smooth and velvety, clearly new world style, fruit bomb, black cherries, evidence of toasty oak. High alcohol that was well integrated. Can be overpowering for some. A glamorous wine indeed! Blown away by the nose this time, and was completely different from the last time I tasted it just months ago (in April 2015). A hedonistic wine indeed. I noted that this was only decanted for one hour prior to tasting. My (and my wife's) wine of the night!

Quite dense and perhaps chewy, didn't feel like a pinot noir initially until it started opening up about an hour later.

Jason's Birthday Wine Night 2015 (Dakota Residence): Unique dried leafy tobacco nose, ash, graphite, pencil shavings, complex, tertiary nose, like literally licking a pencil lead, herbaceous, elegant, Bordeaux nose, fading red fruits, seems cab franc heavy, clean tasting, medium finish, chewing tobacco on the palate, evidence of oak. Some green capsicum. Not a very ripe year. Quite aged. Overall ranked 6th of 6 wines brought this evening - unfortunately the "unloved" bottle by most in this flight. Drink up, as the fruits are fading / drying up. I contributed this.

Popped this to celebrate Father's Day 2015 at Hung Kung Restaurant. It seemed dull and "asleep". I couldn't get anything out of it! Not sure why. Felt rather flat. I was only able to detect aromas of blackcurrant and sweet berries, otherwise, there was nothing going on for me in this wine. I think it to could be because we were using IKEA wine glasses instead of those made of crystal. Everyone at the table agreed that it tasted very average and unremarkable. Such a difference when I tasted this a year back! Could be a flawed bottle.

Popped this at Bellevin with 3 of my colleagues, paired with Peking duck, Char Siew, fried rice, and cheddar cheese. Initially quite tight, it gradually opened up after an hour. This is a masculine pinot noir that is rich, quite powerful, showing ripe dark cherries, and red fruits like strawberries and cranberries. Creamy, vanilla aromas and flavours got more pronounced after some time; evidence of oak. Some spicy notes on the palate, I got a hint of cloves and licorice on the finish. The bouquet was quite complex and perfumed. Alcohol was quite high at 14.7%. Overall, a decent pinot noir, though I may not order it again.

Popped this to celebrate Father's Day 2015 at Hung Kung Restaurant. My first time trying quite an aged new world rose. On the nose, it smells almost like a Chardonnay - creamy, buttery flavours intermingled with strawberries and green leaves. Distinct mineral undertones, almost old world like. On the palate, mildly ripe strawberries, a tad stemmy, good minerality, though acidity could be better. Slight lift on the finish, bittersweet finish. Drink up, on its way to becoming flabby.

When I first tasted it, it seemed dull and "asleep". I couldn't get anything out of it! Not sure why. Felt rather flat. I think it to could be because we were using IKEA wine glasses. Now as I'm writing my tasting notes, assessing it from my Schott Zweisel glass at home 3 hours later, the aromas and flavours are jumping out. Not bad. I'll probably try another bottle again to give it another chance.

Popped this bottle with a group of friends at Salta Argentine Parrilla. Cork was in perfect condition. Colour was garnet, and orange tinged. On the nose, there were distinct hints of raisins and dates, and interestingly, a very porty aroma. On the palate, very clean and delicate, almost pinot like, with hints of strawberries, cranberries, and raisins, and it had notes of orange peel and woody oak on the finish. Acidity was high; lively, citrus undertones. It kinda reminded me of Rebello Fragola Strawberry Tawny Port which I drank recently. This is a lighthearted wine, extremely easy going and smooth, but one thing it lacked - complexity. It paired ok with our steaks, though I felt quite saturated with the raisiny notes after a while.

Popped this with Dim Sum lunch at Royal China (Raffles Hotel) on Good Friday. Distinct old leather, coupled with tobacco, earth, ash, dried leaves, toasted oak, a bit of red cherries, and a hint of vanilla on the nose - mostly secondary and tertiary notes. Mature Bordeaux nose. On the palate, the tannins were smooth like drinking melted jello, showing medium acidity, dried fruits, fading red dusty cherries, and licorice, and ending off with a bittersweet finish. The old leather got more pronounced with further aeration. This wine is clearly past its prime as the fruits are lacking, but it was an enjoyable drink nonetheless.

Decided to pop this in honor of our Founding Father, Lee Kuan Yew, who passed on this week. 1964 was a "year of consolidation" for Singapore. Enjoyed this bottle with my wife at La Barca with a delicious florentine steak.

Sour and dried plums, prunes, and red cherries on the palate, hint of lychee and slightly nutty chocolate on the finish, evidence of old oak, distinctly bordeaux nose, also showing choya, leather, soy sauce, lead, and some earth. Quite an attractive sweet nose. Garnet colour. Initially a bit dead when first popped, felt a bit thin and weak, then it rose from its slumber with a vengeance and tasted 20 years younger after 1 hour in the bottle (this kinda reminds me of one of Mr LKY's speech, "Even from my sickbed, even if you are going to lower me to the grave and I feel that something is going wrong, I will get up.” This bottle was very much alive! Good concentration. Beautiful, elegant tannins that melted in the mouth. 25 second finish. Still holding up well after 2 hours.

Here's a toast to you, our dear Mr LKY!

3/21/2015 - Davyd Chong Likes this wine: 88 points

Initially, this felt quite youthful, showing quite lively fruits - blackcurrants, dusty red cherries, earth, and oak. Strawberries started showing after a while. Melting tannins. Tertiary notes evident. An elegant wine. Unfortunately, the finish was a tad short. My friend who was blind tasted thought it was a new world blend, 7-10 years. My wife didn't really like it. Having drunk Pavie many times, to me, this was quite distinctly a Pavie, albeit not the best representation of it. The fruits faded dramatically after an hour or two, with tobacco, ashtray, smoke, and earthy soil dominating the nose and palate. Hints of capsicum and greed/dried herbs also started appearing. This wine is past its prime, so drink up! The 1983 that I tasted recently was way better.

Popped this on the last day of Chinese New Year, for dinner at Crystal Jade Palace. My wife took the first sip and her eyes gleamed with satisfaction, nodding and showing a thumbs up repeatedly, exclaiming, "This is a very, very good wine. Have we drunk this before?" It had a very intense nose of roasted nuts, dark chocolates and cassis, and even some animal notes. On the palate, super ripe black fruits - dusty plums, black cherries, blackcurrant, coupled with waves of raspberries and candied fruits and nuts paving the way for the wonderfully long finish, though a tad spicy / sharp towards the end. Oak was well integrated. Lovely wine, indeed. This is only Cru level and it already tastes so good!

Popped this at a farewell lunch for my colleague at Gattopardo. A very mature, fine Bordeaux claret, showing lots of earth, hints of smoke, wood and tobacco on the nose and palate, with some red and black dried plums. On the palate, the tannins are firm yet melting, quite dense and rich. Acidity is medium. Mouthfeel was good. However, the fruits are starting to fade. This can probably keep for another 5-10 years before it fully declines.

Wonderfully voluptuous wine! On the nose, it hits you with dark chocolate liquor, and interestingly, tea leaves, coupled with a unique citrus and herbal note, somewhat like lemon tea or green tea. I also got cinnamon and cloves. Perfumy; strong, aromatic nose. On the palate, it was smooth all the way, mouthfeel was close to perfect. I couldn't even detect the alcohol! Sweet dark fruits laced with milk chocolate and blackberry liquor, and a hint of licorice, with some spices. Roasted almonds too? Oak is superbly integrated. Love the concentration. Long finish. This was such a treat, especially considering the fact that only 40 cases of this wine was made!

Popped this to celebrate my anniversary with my wife. My first time trying a Chateau Margaux. Colour was deep garnet. Fill level was top to mid shoulder, but to my surprise, the wine was not oxidised. On the nose, my wife immediately detected strawberry jam. It had a sweet somewhat floral nose, though I think the wine is on its downhill, showing a lot of tertiary notes. I got tobacco, earth, ash, semi-dried flowers and leaves, mushrooms, leather, and red fruits mixed with some dark fruits. Somewhere at the mid palate or finish it displayed a sudden lift of citrusy acidity that I thought was wonderful. I would say acidity is medium+. Flavours are quite bold and firm; this is a muscular wine indeed. On the whole, this is much better than the last 1984 Haut-Brion that we had a few weeks ago.
