6/4/2023 - VDLT Wine Does not like this wine: NR

I don’t understand this kind of wine. Why make a souped-up Bordeaux wine in Tuscany. Nothing about it says Italy. Too much wood and extract and the fruit isn’t very compelling. Sixteen years later it’s tannic and oaky and the alcohol protrudes unpleasantly. You can put as much polish on a wine as you like but it won’t give it soul.

Bitter dried herbs (think of Amaro or Underberg), black cherries, strawberries, tobacco and an intriguing mineral streak on the nose with just a hint of barnyard/soiled diaper. Flavors are consistent with the aromas, and this wine strikes just about a perfect balance between fruit and non fruit flavors. Overall, I'm impressed with how fine a line is straddled here. It finishes very bitter/mineral.

Medium + body, medium + acid, medium + lingering tannin. This drinks pretty well now, all things considered; but has a lot of life left in it and will become more interesting. Hold for 2-5 more years at least.

Still very young but with an hour in the Pyrex it really opened up. Day 2 was a revelation. Dark berries, tobacco, even some forest floor. Imagine that. Lovely structure. Very into this. Will hunt down more.

Take a moment and think about what this is. An off-dry, high acid sparkling wine that spent nearly a decade en tirage before release, made from a grape not precisely known for aging. OK, it's not your mainstream, run of the mill wine. It has some reminiscence of a pet-nat - but not quite that either. And, oh yeah - a decade in cellar before release. Funky, cherry, raspberry, cranberry, and herbal astringency on nose, wiht a hint of cigar ash. Palate is an amazing balance of acid, fruit, mineral and herbal astringency, again with just a bit of that cigar ash on the finish. It is decidedly not "typical" of most wines I've drunk - but I really love it with food and for what it is. That ashy note is something I've picked up in two of this producer's Jasnieres as well - and while unusual, it is not unpleasant.

Second pass at this wine and lord was this satisfying. Similar notes to last time in terms of flavor profile but my wife just adored this, to the extent that we had to crack open a CA cab ( a de negoce #253) to go with our grilled tri tip.
Wow was this fun. Looking forward to the Traslanzas in a few years.
Special shout out to VDLT wines, esp Greg Kramer, without whom I never would have had this.

'00 Mikulski Meursault 1er / '89 Troplong (One10): Well this was a surprise! Past experience with this estate had me decidedly in the "not my style" camp. This 89 though was more restrained and had much better balance. Still there is ripeness, richness and extraction. It seemed like Jekyl & Hyde sharing this wine rather than trading off. That dichotomy made it a bit strange at times. But overall, an enjoyable and impressive wine.

Seems to be on good path but this is no where near ready. Tight and tannic (admittedly it got little air time). The fruit is fresh and vibrant.

  • Comment posted by VDLT Wine:

11/25/2021 7:54:00 AM - If you have enough, try a long decant (of course, always possible it could close up more with extended air) to enjoy the youthful fruit. But I think it’s pretty safe bet that better things to come.

I like this. On the nose fresh fruit. Color was a light gold. a medium finish. This wine felt like I was dinking a young chenin blanc.
The only down side was this wine is evolving closer to a desert wine.

  • Comment posted by VDLT Wine:

9/28/2021 10:09:00 AM - That's because it is practically a dessert wine. It has 70-80 grams of residual sugar. Try it with an aged Chevre or a not too stinky blue cheese.

A nice bottle that behaved younger than I expected. Sustained, good fruit without any discernible development - although their were no apparent tannins. Kind of heavy on the dill flavor but very enjoyable.

Still enjoyable but fading away now. It's interesting how Clos de Bourg still has its purity, whereas this does not. On opening, it was spicy but still quite fresh, but the citrus fruits were rapidly replaced by slightly bitter honey.

No detailed notes since doing this from memory. A surprisingly refined wine, good acidity and none of the flabbiness some Carignan wines suffer from. Had more a day later which showed more strawberry and less spice than before. Also, acidity was starting to become unbalanced after a day of air. So let’s say this is meant for relatively early consumption. Right now it should have about an hour of slow o before serving. Screams out for food accompaniment- aged manchego in our case. Classy. Great value.

Dark purple in the glass.
Pronounced and large bubbles with overt aromas of earth, funk, and purple fruits. Still quite fresh and vibrant for being 11 years old, the juice is acidic and cutting on the front before segueing into bitter and earthy roasted beets, dark ripe plums and plum skins, along with just touch of fresh tarragon on the back end with the finish.

I can certainly see why this is not everyone’s favorite drink, but the Pineau D’Aunis comes across like a dry and serious Lambrusco.

If you like that idea, you’ll likely enjoy this wine quite a bit.
Based on this bottle, I found it to be a pleasant and frothy, dry, funky food wine and would gladly have purchased more of it to drink over the next couple of years or more.

Quite ripe on the nose - not roasted or overripe, but getting there.

Better balanced on the palate, but still a lot of in your face ripeness - you can tell this wine came from a hot vintage. But no real heat on the finish, so the wine does retain a sense of balance.

At least IMO, best to think about consuming this over the next 1-3 years.

After 2 days under argon, pungent cherry and less aggressive scents of dried tobacco, rose, peat. Taste was ripe cherry, a little vanilla. Very balanced between ample but soft tannins and high but not cutting acidity. Balance is the dominant impression here: a classic Barbaresco that isn’t the most attention getting, but excellent pedigree. Needs a few years (>5) in the cellar. Outstanding QPR.

This was excellent with our ribeye/duck breast dinner from Chachama Grill (curbside take-out). Pulled this because I have more. It is in a perfect place. Quintessential Bdx. Cedary old-fashioned nose was like a siren. Perfect balance in the mouth made me not want to swallow it (I did). Lightish without being lean; fruity without being jammy. Just cresting its drinking plateau. Last sip next morning was a delightful way to start the day. (WineauxJ--"Can we still get a case of this?")

Pineau d'aunis is one of my favorite grapes, so I was very excited to try this sparkling red. It's labeled as demi-sec but the residual sugar doesn't stick out at all here, it comes across as rather dry -- like a dry Lambrusco or Gragnano if it was made from our favorite Loire grape. The nose is heavenly and smells like a lovely spicy, earthy pineau d'aunis with typical celery salt notes. The palate is a bit quiet in comparison but has a nice earthy, slightly chewy structure derived from acid and mildly scratchy tannins. I'm sure this would be lovely with charcuterie.
I'm not sure what the winemaker's intention was here, but it's a cool wine and one I'm happy to have a few more bottles of, esp at less than $17 per bottle.
Leftovers on day 2 are a touch more expressive, but now an unpleasant astringence clamps down on the finish. Based on this I'd recommend to give these a brief slumber and then drink away.
