| Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by DBenke on 10/13/2021 & rated 95 points: Ridiculously good. Cork was perfect. Nose fantastic. Fruit is full and velvety. Lucky to taste such a good wine. (794 views) | | Tasted by Tobacco on 2/22/2020: Excellent. Crimson brown, a bit thinner than expected, but not in a bad way. Picked up the currants others noted, and some cedar/green pepper. Fun wine. (1179 views) | | Tasted by ShadowIII on 7/22/2018 & rated 93 points: still with lots of fruit, has developed a very complex nose with cedar, spice, currants, good mid palate, nice long finish (1560 views) | | Tasted by AV2012 on 5/23/2018 & rated 90 points: Nose a bit edgy and herbal. Green pepper, soil, seems like '82 was an underripe vintage in Napa. You can feel the high acidity already on the nose, a bit of volatility as well. Medium-light bodied. The nose opens up nicely. Flowers, honey, some coffee. Very nice. (1567 views) | | Tasted by eschaefer on 11/18/2016 & rated 96 points: Tasted at Press Napa Valley dinner on recommendation from somm Scott White. Fantastic pull. In a blind I would've guessed 2003 or later. So young and big. Decanted 45 minutes. Beautiful cedar and cassis, along with dark chocolate and an earthiness. Forget 1982 Bordeaux. Try 1982 Cali cab. ! Highest recommendation. (2563 views) | | Tasted by andtheodor on 3/27/2016 & rated 91 points: Opened alone on a weeknight and totally defied my expectations; this was fresh, alive, full of currant, tobacco, red bell pepper, a bit of fresh sawn cedar. Brilliant winemaking. (2720 views) | | Tasted by 82Latour on 11/16/2013 & rated 91 points: Fruit has melted into secondary flavors - earth, tabacco, cedar. Quite delightful. Shockingly dark red, drinking young. Short finish. (3221 views) | | Tasted by rajivp on 3/3/2013 & rated 93 points: A great wine! Fruit is mostly gone, but excellent secondary left bank Bordeaux style flavors emerging. (3118 views) | | Tasted by mtaczak on 7/20/2011 flawed bottle: old and faded, bitter. suspect provenance issues given the number of other old bottles from this source that were no good. (3572 views) | | Tasted by Rhewins on 11/11/2010 & rated 92 points: not old at all, lots of fruit, well balanced, good finish
some years left apparently! (2949 views) | | Tasted by ricovino on 1/3/2006 & rated 94 points: perfectly aged oakville bench cab. Lush and resolved. Drank with a host of thousands. (3160 views) | | Tasted by buckeye76 on 8/25/1999 & rated 91 points: TOBACCO, PEPPER, EARTHINESS, AND DEEP BERRY FRUIT IN THE NOSE. FLAVOR LIKE THE NOSE WITH NICE COMPLEXITY AND A MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (368 views) | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 10/26/1990 & rated 80 points: Groth Tasting at Groth (Napa): Brown/red color in the glass, slightly bad taste, too much acid on the finish. Opened for us so not much you can say. (84 views) | | Tasted by MicklethePickle on 2/1/1989 & rated 85 points: Date is a placeholder. Spring 1989 in Beaumont office. Rich, ruby color. Some orange at the edge. Nose a bit neutral. Smelly glass or soap residue? Nice, rich palate. American oak very prominent in the finish. Tannins have fallen away-but somewhat bitter. 5-9-15-6: 85/100. (631 views) |
| Groth Producer website
Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121 acre Oakcross Vineyard in the Oakville appellation in 1981. The vineyard was originally owned by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan who planted the estate with some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and which they included in their wines from the 1970s vintages. In 1985, after the Groths moved permanently to the Napa Valley, Groth Winery was founded and began producing what have become some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons coming from the Napa Valley. Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received the distinction of a 100 point rating from Robert Parker which launched the label into the list of top wineries in Napa. Dennis Groth has served as President of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and Chairman of the Wine Institute and continues to produce award-winning, highly rated Cabernets.Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Oakville |
