Tasted by ikkaariainen on 6/12/2022 & rated 93 points: Highly recommend - at or perhaps slightly past peak, completely mature and drinking beautifully, time to drink up any remaining holdings. Not formally decanted but aired in bottle for 3 hours+ prior to consumption with risotto done using a modified version of a true, tested and time hallowed CT "wine guys" risotto recipe (thanks Tom Carlson, Tim Heaton, Scott Hollowell). Medium purple, peripheral bricking present, soft mouth feel, oak and tannins almost completely resolved, complex and balanced with a soft long lingering aftertaste. Soft aromatic nose of warm plum, dark cherry, smoke and bacon fat. Flavor profile of fading oak and tannins up front with dark stone fruit, blackberry and classic cassis giving way to a fatter more secondary peofile of leather, bacon fat, grilled meat and a beautiful smokey finish.  Tasted by Kbentley007 on 3/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Great secondary aromas and flavors, tannins finely resolved (2662 views)
Tasted by mchamuka on 10/26/2018 & rated 87 points: This is just getting a bit past peak, was medium bodied, fruit was apparent but muted. Color was dulling down a bit. Decanted which helped but would have been better about 6 months ago. If you have it drink it now. (3631 views)
Tasted by BGK810 on 1/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Cassis and black fruit flavors. Rich, smooth, with a medium length finish. Very good and still has aging potential. (4329 views)
Tasted by trippingturtles on 10/12/2017 & rated 92 points: The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is heavy sediment in the bottle. It smells like passion fruit, strawberry jam and lychee. Intoxicating bouquet. The body is medium. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. Could age a little longer. (4923 views)
Tasted by sunalsorises on 1/1/2016 & rated 90 points: Medium depth with a good mouthfeel. Some tannins on the finish but drinking very well. (8267 views)
Tasted by PackerJon on 12/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Big fan of Groth cabs- especially their reserves. This one was a solid effort that is drinking well right now. Tannins provide structure without overwhelming. Wine seemed a bit thin in flavor on first pour, but opened up nicely over next 1.5 hours. Did not decant as always prefer to try it 1st then decide. (7476 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 12/9/2015 flawed bottle: This bottle was a gift, not stored properly, it was not that bad actually but I will not rate it. I could tell it would have been really smooth and silky...without the tainted aromas. Too bad. I loved it in 2009. (7025 views)
Tasted by rbfoote on 10/12/2015 & rated 91 points: Nicely balanced. Drank yesterday so not able to provide proper tasting note but it had body but still delicate. Good time to drink it. (5770 views)
Tasted by MoreWinePlease on 9/25/2015 & rated 90 points: Stored @55degrees, tasted non-blind against 2007 Quilceda Creek CV Red. Surprisingly fresh but drink up soon, this had a pleasing nose of black fruit preserves/mushrooms and oak spice. Rich mid palate of cassis and blackberries and subtle spice notes and a medium finish. Showing well better than its WS score. (5295 views)
Tasted by Deb Deb 58 on 9/13/2015: Chalky at first. Let it breathe. Delicious. Had the bottle with Lori, holly and bob. (1642 views)
Tasted by reggiew on 6/10/2015: Price valuation 145.00 6/2015 (1956 views)
Tasted by DRK III on 4/11/2015 & rated 89 points: Let breathe for one hour. Classic Napa cab aromas and taste. In the nose: cassis, leather, and herbs. A good bit of rosemary. Full-bodied with a strong mid-palate, a nice, but short finish. The difference between this and a $100 Cabernet is depth of flavor, extraction (to the extent that it is "all the rage" now), power and length. Nothing fundamentally wrong with this wine, just a simple, but clean and tasty Napa cab. At $60 this is overpriced. Drinks more like a $40-$50 bottle IMO. Didn't improve the second day. (2029 views)
Tasted by raek on 2/1/2015 & rated 88 points: Wine was okay. Barely any acid and alcohol is heavy. The last two i've had was much better 03 Dalla Valle and 03 Spottswoode (best of the three). I don't think this one will improve anymore with age. (2381 views)
Tasted by GEDC on 4/6/2014 & rated 91 points: PNP from Mag nice California cab. (3728 views)
Tasted by apljb on 2/14/2014 & rated 90 points: Big and bold, with plenty of dark fruit like a good California Cab should be. Plenty of tannin, which went very well with a grilled fillet (or filet mignon, if you're in the US...). (3510 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 11/29/2013 & rated 89 points: No signs of aging in color or flavor profile. Gives a big dose of fruit and oak that is tasty and crowd pleasing but fairly monolithic. I gave an 89 last time and nothing has changed. (3867 views)
Tasted by bluedog on 11/25/2013 & rated 92 points: Very nice. Light sawdust and vanilla on the nose. Smooth fruit with vanilla undertones, medium finish, and nicely integrated tannins. Drinking extremely well. No alcohol heat. Not past it's peak, recommend drinking over the next two to three years. (3626 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 8/22/2013 & rated 90 points: What a nice surprise. This was a traditional cali cab and really liked it. (4025 views)
Tasted by xboomer on 8/15/2013 & rated 91 points: Very good Cab. A very dependable label. (2761 views)
Tasted by CasaHernandez on 7/17/2013: This is just a big wine. It's mellowed some, but still just a huge wine. Fruit bomb, but in a good way. (2913 views)
Tasted by oldgrowth45 on 6/23/2013: Drank over two nights, with and without food. 14.7% a.b.v. Dark purple color. Thick legs. Bright fruity nose (Boysenberries), with some tar/asphalt/warm earth (does that even make sense?) lurking in the background. Lots of ripe, sweet fruit on the initial palate. A balanced mid-palate (the heat of the 14.7% isn't overtly noticeable), there's nice tannins to counterbalance the fruit. It gets tart on the finish. Not much complexity (a one-note wine). It seemed to show better alone, food just seemed to point out it's short-comings. Good, but not great. (2437 views)
Tasted by monk1019 on 3/24/2013 flawed bottle: Spoiled with little to no fruit left. Empty palate. Sadly (2801 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 1/20/2013 & rated 89 points: Decanted 1hr, rich, smooth and silky, with currants, cassis, plum, vanilla and hints of chocolate. (2616 views)
Tasted by Yountmillrd on 1/20/2013 & rated 89 points: - Brick color. (2503 views)

Groth

Producer website

Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121 acre Oakcross Vineyard in the Oakville appellation in 1981. The vineyard was originally owned by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan who planted the estate with some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and which they included in their wines from the 1970s vintages. In 1985, after the Groths moved permanently to the Napa Valley, Groth Winery was founded and began producing what have become some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons coming from the Napa Valley. Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received the distinction of a 100 point rating from Robert Parker which launched the label into the list of top wineries in Napa. Dennis Groth has served as President of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and Chairman of the Wine Institute and continues to produce award-winning, highly rated Cabernets.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
