Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 100 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rmcnees on 5/7/2021 & rated 91 points: At seventeen years this is likely at its peak and should continue to drink well for another decade. Thankfully we still hold a couple more bottles of this vintage. The fill level was perfect while the cork appearing perfect was a bit soft upon extraction using a 'ahso' two pronged cork puller.

Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, smooth, elegant, briary black berry and black raspberry fruits with notes of cassis, dusty cedar and hints of dark chocolate, herbs and creamy oak turning to gripping tannin on a fruit filled finish.

Tasted by macliii on 10/1/2020 & rated 90 points: Still drinking well and like an older world wine but in my opinion getting towards the end of the drinking window as the finish was not very long. Did go nicely with a Grilled NY Strip Steak. (1560 views)
Tasted by Salute on 12/25/2016 & rated 91 points: Soft tannins - velvety smooth mature wine. Not too late but drink now. (4078 views)
Tasted by pauljenson on 8/21/2015 flawed bottle: Corked. :( (5746 views)
Tasted by JPT99 on 7/20/2015 & rated 94 points: Very pleasant drinker. Tanins are mellowed nicely. Could stand a bit more time in bottle. Muscular fruit character. Bit of leather. Nice balance. A wood fired steak would have been a welcome pairing. (5596 views)
Tasted by pritters001 on 1/10/2015 & rated 92 points: Well balanced. Expected more tannins based on a few other tasting notes. Girlfriend loved it and she's not a huge Napa cab fan. (5447 views)
Tasted by donbaxter on 9/20/2014 & rated 94 points: We had many fine wines this evening and I have to say the Groth was one of the very best! Velvet smooth... very nice! (5761 views)
Tasted by chilibear on 5/25/2014 & rated 92 points: Dark violet in color. Black licorice, vanilla and spice on the nose. Full bodied- tannins and acids are in perfect balance now. Drinking beautifully with mild fruits and dark chocolate on the palate. Velvety finish. Had issues with the cork on this bottle, but thankfully, the wine was unaffected. (3979 views)
Tasted by jlhkiss on 5/11/2014 & rated 92 points: Opened and decanted 2 hours before dinner of seared tri-tip, grilled asparagus, and baked potatoes. Black sappy purple color. Musty nose brings chocolate cherries, vanilla, creme de cassis, baking spices, and scattered floral and mineral notes. The palate is big and full-bodied, with thick, rich, savory Oakville viscosity, brining loads of blackberry pie, black currant, mocha coffee, cherry chocolate cake, and scattered hints of leather, herbs, and tobacco. The finish is rounding out perfectly with a juicy acidity in check vs. mellow, sweet tannins. This appears to be entering peak drinking, or at least in a very nice drinking window. I'd recommend drinking this 2014-2020. (2575 views)
Tasted by Tom Myers on 3/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Very good but seems to be getting towards the end of its prime drinking window. Drink the remaining bottles in the next year. (2906 views)
Tasted by meatbomb013 on 2/7/2014 & rated 93 points: Youthful despite 10 years from harvest. Still very fruit driven with anise, blackberry, vanilla, and a hint of mocha. Smooth with minimal oak and well integrated tannins. Finish is medium but very pleasing. I don't have any more but suspect that it will remain at this level for a handful of years ? Whether it will get much better? (2501 views)

Tasted by danscellar on 12/24/2013 & rated 91 points: A Big well balance Cab, approachable right out of the bottle good color, very nice nose and has that good cab mouth feel. (1902 views)
Tasted by csklsc on 12/18/2013 & rated 92 points: Big Ca cab with integrated tannins. Black cherry, kirsch tones. Delicious and ready to drink. (1969 views)
Tasted by unionst on 5/29/2013 & rated 90 points: Dark cherry color. Nose of ripe cassis, black licorice, vanilla and tree bark. On day two even a little pan cooked chicken livers. Full throttled mouthfeel. Very expressive with dark chocolate covered cherries on the palate. Big Oakville floor wine. (2547 views)
Tasted by grover91 on 4/20/2013 & rated 93 points: Everything you want a cab to be!! Recommend decanting 1+ hrs. Big, bold, delicious. Definitely ready to drink. Tanins are just right. (2360 views)
Tasted by DavidDay on 4/5/2013 & rated 91 points: This wine still has room for improvement, fruit still their, tannins softening up. Toast, creme de cassis, graphite, flowers, and spice on the nose, medium full-bodied, nice finish. (2312 views)
 Tasted by Charlie.Gail on 3/16/2013 & rated 92 points: Nice,smooth cab. (2345 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 2/4/2013 & rated 90 points: PNP, could have used a decant, smokey nose, with hints of cola, blackberries, currants, plums, vanilla, dark chocolate notes, still has some tannins to intergrate,
Plenty of life left and maybe even some improvment in it's future. My guess, previous ct note was from a bottle of questionable storage! (2467 views)
Tasted by Bff on 1/28/2013 & rated 74 points: Well past (1917 views)
Tasted by clarktoews on 1/13/2013 & rated 92 points: this was the winner between '02 & '03, neede abit more time to open up as the finish was a bit hard edged but a very very ncie wine.
The wine looks Garnet colored. It smells like and Red Currant. It tastes like Coffee, and Oak. The body is Medium/Full. The wine has Polished texture. The wine finishes Medium. (1869 views)
Tasted by jmcmurtry on 6/24/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2 hrs. Very very nice. Very smooth, lovely integration, might have benefited from just a touch more acidity to carry the heavy and delicious fruit flavour load. (2652 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 4/7/2012 & rated 90 points: Decanted 1hr, nice plum, blackberries, hints of vanilla, ripe, not overly complex, still some tannins to intergrate, but drinking well now. (2557 views)
Tasted by jdabrowski1027 on 3/24/2012 & rated 88 points: P&P. Dark crimson with slight lightening around the edges. Spices and chocolate covered cherries are prominent on the nose, while cedar, and fresh baked cake peek out. Thinner bodied, the palate is spicy with a good amount of oak. Slight green notes are present but not terribly distracting. Underneath all that is some good dark berry flavors, leather, with drying tannins and a hot finish. This wine just doesn't pull it all together. 88 (2648 views)
Tasted by dontime on 12/10/2011: Opened an hour prior to drinking. Rich black fruit and earth on the nose. Similar notes on the palate with a bit of licorice. Very smooth. (3260 views)

Groth

Producer website

Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121 acre Oakcross Vineyard in the Oakville appellation in 1981. The vineyard was originally owned by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan who planted the estate with some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and which they included in their wines from the 1970s vintages. In 1985, after the Groths moved permanently to the Napa Valley, Groth Winery was founded and began producing what have become some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons coming from the Napa Valley. Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received the distinction of a 100 point rating from Robert Parker which launched the label into the list of top wineries in Napa. Dennis Groth has served as President of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and Chairman of the Wine Institute and continues to produce award-winning, highly rated Cabernets.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
