Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 188 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Maryastro on 5/9/2024: Good taste. Had to sieve it (38 views)
Tasted by packinmn on 1/8/2024 & rated 90 points: Still quite good, but its time to drink any bottles you have left. Decanted and sat for 45 minutes before serving with picana steaks. I was kind of meh about it initially, but it really came alive with food. (210 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 7/25/2022 & rated 93 points: At sixteen years this may be at its apex, but certainly has another decade to go at this level. I extended my Cellartracker drinking window from 2018 to 2026.
Dark blackish inky purple garnet colored, full bodied, complex, concentrated, structured yet perfectly balanced, smooth polished black berry fruits are highlighted by notes of cassis, graphite, dark chocolate, black tea and hints of anise with soft velvety tannins on a long lingering finish.

Tasted by Kozakofthewest on 3/8/2022 & rated 91 points: Took almost 2 hours to open up quite smooth and pleasant. (1416 views)
Tasted by TheoIV on 1/10/2022 & rated 90 points: Nose: mild red fruit Palate: smooth, mellow wine with notes of cherry vanilla. Lightly dry, not bold. Very drinkable. Medium acid & finish length (1599 views)
Tasted by gamlingman on 5/23/2021 & rated 94 points: WOW for all the worry that this was past its prime I can assure you it was not. With absolutely huge bursts of dark berries & Currant dominating the initial explosion followed by well rounded but yet gritty mineral tannins that still have me salivating at the end. Bottle held up well and in my opinion is at its peak despite what WS said back 15 years ago to best drink 2016. Still an excellent bottle and paired perfectly with my Wagyu steak last night! (1978 views)
Tasted by dlduchon on 10/5/2020 & rated 91 points: Nice Cab flavors. Nice balance. Delightful. Good structure. (2192 views)
Tasted by Vandy1983 on 8/22/2020 & rated 91 points: This wine still exhibited soft tannins and adequate fruit and acidity. Very good paired with a grilled flank steak. (1474 views)
Tasted by MGL Wine on 4/18/2020 & rated 90 points: Still a bit tight and tannic right out of the bottle. Decanted and it opened up within an hour though. Nice, straightforward cab. Good body, texture. Paired well with beef. (1591 views)
Tasted by Badgerwino on 4/17/2020: Drank with grilled tenderloins w shitake oyster mushrooms sautéed in butter and garlic.
Good wine and good food. Who knew they'd be so well suited for each other? ha!
2006 Groth is for me in a very good spot. Tannins faded and the fruit is pure.
Drink em if you have them. (1458 views)
Tasted by Bozekt on 3/17/2020 & rated 94 points: This is simply outstanding at the moment. Perfect balance of black fruits, earth and tobacco, and a bit of vanilla on the smooth finish. Structure is well integrated, acidity is still at medium-med plus, while tannins have softened to a moderate level. Perfect accompaniment to our aged porterhouse. Beautiful wine, drink within the next year or two. (1363 views)
Tasted by petepell on 1/26/2019 & rated 91 points: Very soft, still had nice fruit, cherries. Mellow tannins, slight leather. Perfect timing (1827 views)
Tasted by sean7711 on 11/10/2018 & rated 92 points: Tasted side by side with a 2002 Groth. This had much more fruit, notes of chocolates. I could see this lasting a few more years, but in a nice place now. (2297 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 2/3/2018 & rated 87 points: Underwhelming. Probably waited too long, but this wine really lacked complexity. Minimal fruit and very few identifying qualities. It was very plain and lacked character. I was even patient and gave it a long decant but there was no improvement. Disappointing! (2514 views)
Tasted by Benjamin.s.greer on 11/16/2017 flawed bottle: Slightly corked, only noticed it on the nose, not in taste. Faded fast though. I'd open mine soon if I had another (2737 views)
Tasted by schierwine on 8/31/2017 & rated 93 points: Very good bottle. Worth holding this as long as we did. (2927 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 2/18/2017 & rated 91 points: Aerated with a Vinturi and decanted for 2.5 hours. Aromas of blackberry, currant, plum, violets, mocha and spice. Red and black fruit, mocha, spice and ripe tannins on the palate. Leads to a long finish. Full bodied. Served with meatloaf. TN 1,000. (3130 views)
Tasted by endoit on 1/30/2017: Needs 2-3 hr breathing and warmup time. Solid 91-92 pts, no need to rush, will last 81 (3145 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 11/25/2016 & rated 89 points: Ditto other reviews this one is showing a bit weaker and singular. Some taught fruit coming though followed by hard earth. Limited note. (2678 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 1/14/2016 & rated 90 points: This was a little weak and more acidic than I would like. There's some charm, but not a lot really. I expect more from a cab at this pricepoint. I think the standard Groth cab used to be a lot better. (4123 views)
Tasted by Rayden on 12/14/2015 & rated 91 points: Another one consumed in our drinking frenzy golf trip weekend. Clearly a good wine but lacked that extra factor to make it stick out against it's competitors. Ageing very well. (3705 views)
Tasted by EMark on 11/25/2015: More reddish than purple in the glass. Muted musty nose—may need more air time for SO2 to blow off. Pleasant light hit of red fruit—plum, cherry—on entry. Strong acid is complemented by quite firm (still) tannin. Some tobacco mid-to-back palate. Not a powerhouse Napa Cab to my way of thinking—more like a claret. Good wine that nobody should feel pressed to empty from their cellar. A lot of years left in this one. (3031 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/19/2015 & rated 91 points: WIML91

Tasted double blind.

Purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of rose petals, tobacco, black pepper and cardamon. Rich flavors of berries, black cherries and plums. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. (3554 views)
Tasted by LCHammer on 9/30/2015 & rated 88 points: Fruit a little muted. Medium finish. Probably at or beyond its' peak. Was about the same the next day. You can find better for the money. (3086 views)
Tasted by jpstough on 6/6/2015 & rated 92 points: Incredibly smooth, leathery. Cherry and spice. (2166 views)

Groth

Producer website

Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121 acre Oakcross Vineyard in the Oakville appellation in 1981. The vineyard was originally owned by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan who planted the estate with some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and which they included in their wines from the 1970s vintages. In 1985, after the Groths moved permanently to the Napa Valley, Groth Winery was founded and began producing what have become some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons coming from the Napa Valley. Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received the distinction of a 100 point rating from Robert Parker which launched the label into the list of top wineries in Napa. Dennis Groth has served as President of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and Chairman of the Wine Institute and continues to produce award-winning, highly rated Cabernets.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
