Tasted by jusdavi on 11/25/2023 & rated 91 points: wow, this was still alive and kicking from 1.5L. Drank over 4 hours and improved. No sediment. Drink up. (234 views)
Tasted by cgoding6 on 10/31/2023: Velvety (285 views)
Tasted by cgoding6 on 9/30/2023 & rated 89 points: Opened up nicely after an hour decant

Leather, plum, oak (302 views)
Tasted by In vino potestus est on 2/3/2021 & rated 94 points: It's the pleasant surprises that have the greatest impact. At 28 years, and especially after the cork disintegrated upon opening, I was more than a little surprised by how very good this was. Deep purple, not much color change. Some grassy elements on the nose but not unpleasant. What made this so good were the rich co-mingling flavors of dark fruit and mocha perfectly balanced and integrated with the scant remaining tannins. And it has a long finish. I can't imagine this staying this good for much longer, so I would drink what you have. Bravo! to those makers who fashioned this beauty. (900 views)
Tasted by SadEdjo on 1/4/2020 & rated 91 points: Dark colour. Some bricking. Dumb at first, once it opened up (1+ hours) it displayed cassis, dark fruit, minerality. Good lift. Long finish. Suspect it's on a down-slide so drink up! Still, impressive for a 27 year old wine (1059 views)
Tasted by In vino potestus est on 11/18/2016 & rated 90 points: Deep dark. Fragrant Dark berries and plums and plenty of dirt (terroir) on the nose. Smooth, dried blackberries and spearmint with a hint of bitter aftertaste. Longish finish . Good now. But the clock is ticking., I guesstimate another 2 years before it rolls over. (2254 views)
Tasted by jeginmt on 11/6/2015 & rated 93 points: This Cab has matured into an excellent wine--rich fruit, very smooth and balanced. (2715 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 1/16/2014 & rated 91 points: Pretty much agree with BCharlieG's review of last year. Cork disintegrated, there was lots of sentiment and the tannins were reduced. However, the wine is not yet on the decline. Celebrated my youngest son's 21st birthday with this wine tonight. (3772 views)
Tasted by BCharlieG on 3/25/2013 & rated 92 points: Corkbuzz Wine Studio NYC Back Vintage Wine Class (Corkbuzz - NYC): From Corkbuzz Wine Studio NYC Back Vintage Wine Class on 3/25/2013: This wine has evolved so nicely with age: The nose actually has a decent amount of heat left on it which surprised me some. The nose is cedar, wood plank, smokey notes of old leather. SO Oakville. Palate confirms the note but adds some secondary notes of spice box, tobacco, shoe leather. Someone added mole sauce which is an excellent descriptor. most interestingly, vegatal elements coming through here too which I'm not all that crazy about. Very bordeaux on how this wine has aged. Probably ready to be consumed now but could give it a little more time. (4231 views)
Tasted by SparkDogg on 8/16/2012 & rated 90 points: Cork disintegrated but still got better with time in a decanter. What a workhorse. (4113 views)
Tasted by JCDR on 1/28/2012 & rated 90 points: quite nice...cork fell apart but wine was lovely. drink up. (2976 views)
Tasted by bwillia on 6/20/2010 & rated 90 points: Just a beautiful resolved bottle of Cali Cab. Groth ages so gracefully. (2996 views)
Tasted by SparkDogg on 5/15/2009 & rated 91 points: Wow - still drinking. Needs lot's of air time though. (2421 views)
Tasted by tyvoodoo on 10/11/2008 & rated 89 points: Fruit was rather thin on this. Tannins are fully resolved and the wine is very soft. Good nose of delicate red fruits, menthol, mint and spice. Palate was nice, wine is medium bodied. Best years are behind this. (2259 views)
Tasted by tyvoodoo on 8/31/2008 & rated 90 points: Good bottle of wine. Showing nicely with good fruit and balance. Once bottle left and hoping for better notes on the next showing. (2148 views)
Tasted by gregg g on 5/14/2005: My last bottle of this. It has drank quite well most of it's life. Today it showed signs of aging though the color remains purple with some ruby tinged edges at the rim. Showing considerable funkiness in the nose of earth, spice and tar. Faint aromas of cherry are present as well. There was very little oak profile left and the typical notes of vanilla and dill were, thankfully absent. The tannins are smooth and add to the silky mouthfeel. Structurally, this wine is still intact, though may be moving to the end of its drinking plateau. This wine was tasted along with a '88 Gruad Larose which helped to highlight the sweeter profile, I'm not sure I would have detected if drunk alone. The finish is of medium length and slightly drying. (2727 views)
Tasted by SadEdjo on 3/22/2003: very bright cherry, cassis & cedar. stunning (1838 views)

Groth

Producer website

Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121 acre Oakcross Vineyard in the Oakville appellation in 1981. The vineyard was originally owned by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan who planted the estate with some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and which they included in their wines from the 1970s vintages. In 1985, after the Groths moved permanently to the Napa Valley, Groth Winery was founded and began producing what have become some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons coming from the Napa Valley. Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received the distinction of a 100 point rating from Robert Parker which launched the label into the list of top wineries in Napa. Dennis Groth has served as President of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and Chairman of the Wine Institute and continues to produce award-winning, highly rated Cabernets.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
