Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 146 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Outplaying on 3/24/2024: No notes, but this is pretty good. Soft and rich but not overly so. (239 views)
Tasted by Anders1Simonsen on 6/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Still drinking well. A good aging color. Nose dominant by vanilla most likely from the cask. Smooth on the palet. Enjoyable for all. (597 views)
Tasted by NoWineWiz on 4/16/2023 & rated 90 points: Melded notes of blackberry, plum, along with other dark fruit, vanilla & cedar box, worn leather. Pleasant tannins & full finish (525 views)
Tasted by Azar on 2/13/2022: Drank this vintage back in October & it was still drinking well. It Seems to have flattened out now as this bottle wasn’t as good as the one we opened in October. If you have it, open it NOW & drink it. (1596 views)
Tasted by Azar on 10/30/2021 & rated 85 points: Spice and berry aromas. Blackberry in the mouth, along with sautéed fajita peppers & steak & some spice. Has a long juicy finish. (1787 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 10/17/2021: Fairly rich fruit, decent acidity and soft tannin. Starting to gain some earthy flavors. Oak not noticeable. Bigger than we prefer these days, but not bad. (1775 views)
Tasted by aerosol on 8/29/2020 & rated 91 points: Opened and decanted for about 30 minutes at the WineWatch. Nose was not significant, maybe a little oakiness and miniscule floral component. It hit me that this wine was still pretty fresh on the palate and a decent amount of acidity. The palate was full for blackberry, some currant, and soft chewy tannins. I, and everyone else, really likes the wine.
2nd night: It held up over night in the Vino-tech and still is good. definitely a chocolate component followed by acidity and I won't let this go any further.
drink it up now and enjoy this wine because it's not getting better
I agree with everyone else below that it's now or never for this bottle, so if you have some, drink up. (2550 views)
Tasted by bluepeter2020@outlook.com on 7/27/2020 & rated 91 points: PnP, no need to decant, aroma was lacking but the wine made up for it on the palette. Ripe black fruit, med body, med to long finish. Drinking well now, maybe a year left, no longer. Zero sediment. (2452 views)
Tasted by Ace5glassesinthesky on 6/30/2020 & rated 91 points: Very smooth, some fruit left but definitely tasted the bottle age. Give it a decant for a couple hours and enjoy (2020 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 6/3/2020 & rated 91 points: Tonight was our first real steak since the Coronavirus, so it called for a Napa Cab. Groth never wows, but it always pleases. Splash decanted and drank over 3 hours, during college friends Zoom, with and after dinner. No detailed notes. Rich, earthy, tasty. Drinking well now, but at least a few more good years left. (1967 views)
Tasted by jungarinos on 3/27/2020 & rated 95 points: Still tasted great. Opened it up 2 hours earlier to breathe. (2102 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 1/3/2020 & rated 90 points: This is the reason I always remind myself that MOST California wines are best in their primary years or even on release with a long decant. This is now feeling heavy and falling out of balance as the tannins are fading and much much sweet fruit is left behind. This was a stunning good wine on release and for several years after...One bottle to go. Thank you for the fun along the way. DRINK (2066 views)
Tasted by scotty_b on 3/17/2019 & rated 90 points: 1 hour decant. Rich blackberry, anise, tobacco, licorice, mild barnyard, and healthy dose of cedar. Won't offend, but won't wow either. (2207 views)
Tasted by scotty_b on 3/11/2019 & rated 88 points: Seems to be fading from previous notes in 2014. (2077 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 9/15/2018: Overall note from a Groth tasting, presented by the winery at the Yacht Club in Lillydale. The pours were small, but sufficient to understand each wine.
2013 Groth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignonn – This comes across as big and a bit green. This seems quite young, is quite simple, and got me thinking that they better age well to justify the price. Impression - 88
2014 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – This is a step up from the regular cabernet. At least there is some interest. Full bodied with spice, dark fruit, earth and chocolate. I still don’t get the price tag though. Impression - 89.
2008 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – This wine was boring and tired. This wine does not taste like it is meant to age, as it should be singing right now. Impression - 87
2009 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – A slightly different flavor profile from the 2008, but also dull and tired. I should have asked the presenters if they decanted and how long. This was either over decanted or is not aging well. Impression - 87
2010 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – Ok, this tastes like an acceptable cabernet. Our discussion at the table was that it just tastes “cabby”, and I would expect more from Napa and this producer. Impression - 88 (2480 views)
Tasted by EMark on 8/18/2018: Dark fruit on the nose. Very pretty maroon color in the glass. Light hit of currant on the tip of the tongue. Some tobacco. Some still sturdy tannin. Detectable, for those of us who look for it, acid. Nice full body. (2382 views)
Tasted by timbobwhite on 7/17/2018: No notes taken. Decanted for sediment. Showed very well. Served too warm. Excellent bottle, classic Oakviille profile. (2717 views)
Tasted by AVProsser on 3/12/2018 & rated 91 points: - Ruby color with medium forming legs. It's in total harmony with a medium/full body. Smooth texture with a medium finish - Very smooth and silky, approaching apex. Still plenty of body. Nice! (2475 views)
Tasted by JohanEGS on 2/6/2018 & rated 89 points: Dark heavy oak and black currant on a bottle. One more year and 5 points higher? (2617 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 11/16/2017 & rated 92 points: Softer and slightly sweeter now, but still dry on exit from polished tannin grip...Cassis, crunchy red plums, tilled soil, some loam...Very nice! Near peak...Drink over 3 years (2979 views)
Tasted by Berge65 on 9/2/2017 & rated 89 points: Not as good as the 09 I had a few weeks ago. Also, opened a 2014 J Lohr Cab and at first wasn't much better but did open up nicely. (2951 views)
Tasted by superboo on 6/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Let the bottle open for 45 minutes. Lots of dark fruit on the nose. Very smooth tannins and hints of spice + tobacco. Not strong fruit on the palette. Drinking very well right now. (3197 views)
Tasted by timbobwhite on 6/18/2017 & rated 94 points: Decanted 2 hours, some sediment. Deep red to mahogany edge. Blue and blackberry immediately on opening. Nose is perfumed and layered with blue and black fruit, a bit of barnyard, oak and cedar over all. Medium body with very good acid backing. Balanced flavors of fruit, oak and tannin. Lingering finish. Light, very elegant, classic Oakville cab. This is drinking very well now, but has structure for many years to come. (2878 views)
Tasted by HelloHelloHello on 3/5/2017 & rated 92 points: Classic Nappa, too much oak for my liking. Still well made, just not my style. Blueberry juice, linear. (3279 views)
Tasted by mwneil on 10/28/2016 & rated 88 points: Started out with bitter green finish, slowly opened up and smoothed out, good fruit with complex flavor, decent wine maybe my expectations were too high for this wine, fairly pricey, but the wine is focused and precise in way that cheaper wines don't have in their taste, drank with steak, won't drink again. Groth

Producer website

Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121 acre Oakcross Vineyard in the Oakville appellation in 1981. The vineyard was originally owned by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan who planted the estate with some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and which they included in their wines from the 1970s vintages. In 1985, after the Groths moved permanently to the Napa Valley, Groth Winery was founded and began producing what have become some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons coming from the Napa Valley. Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received the distinction of a 100 point rating from Robert Parker which launched the label into the list of top wineries in Napa. Dennis Groth has served as President of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and Chairman of the Wine Institute and continues to produce award-winning, highly rated Cabernets.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
