  • Wine Spectator Grand Tour (Las Vegas, NV): Comprised of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, fermented in stainless steel and subsequently aged for 38 months in new French oak barrels, Guigal's 2019 Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie is impressive from the get-go. Flaunting an intense aromatic array of dark plums, Montmorency cherries, clementines, baking spices, smoke, graphite and savory herbs, it delivers comparable flavors on the full-bodied palate. Beautifully fresh, sapid and seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%), it still hasn't fully integrated its plentiful fine-grained tannins and toasted oak, which are pervasive on the layered mid-palate and lingering finish. This is a fabulous wine that may merit an even higher score with a bit more cellaring. Drink 2026-2039.

  • Plum, bacon, bitter chocolate, and subtle orange rind. Terrific mouthfeel. Firm, spicy tannins on the longish finish.

This is really good, but quite young. One or two hour decant could help. Tasted this at the Wine Spectator Grand Tour in New Orleans. My wife and I met up with DQ at this event. So fun…

  • WS Grand Tour (Walkaround Tasting) (New Orleans): This wine is such a no brainer delicious Syrah, there isn’t much to say about it that hasn’t been said. Glad I got to taste again. Can drink now but will only get better. I always look for this at duty free in Europe!!

  • First bottle of the week while settling into our Sedona redrock views.

Very approachable early. A good amount of oak influence which took me by surprise upon opening. Could have mistaken for Keplinger's Fuego y Mar, which I love.

Balanced with a lengthy finish so there is no harm in opening one early but assume this will have have some awkward phases in the future. Glad I loaded up when HiTimeWine was running their Rhone special for the month of Feb.

  • PnP so might not be fair. Color is deep ruby/purple. On the nose: Pepper, violets, cassis, cinnamon, espresso and plum. Fantastic nose. Very rich. On the palate: Raspberry, Violets, cassis, pepper, cinnamon, espresso, charcuterie, smoke and some plum. This is a serious wine. Very broad and generous flavors but refined and elegant. World class. I will go back next weekend to the wine store and may see if I can buy every bottle. A great one to lay down and drink over the next 10 years. Guigal really makes great wines.
