Medium body. Lovely jewel like ruby at the core but plenty of bricking round the edges now. Double decanted and took an hour or so to get going. Plenty of red fruit, red currants and pomegranate, some freshly turned earth, silky in the mouth, just a few fine tannins sit on the middle palate with good acidity to wash it through. Good persistence and perfume in the mouth. Develops nicely in the glass over a couple of hours. This feels like a good time to drink this wine, but it’ll keep for some time too

Translucent ruby color. Nose of iron inflected soaring violets, deep brambly earth, regal plum blossom. Layers of subtle iron, smoothly integrated sauvage, and honed, almost tart red berry fruit ringing with authority and sneaky persistence on the velvety palate. Brisk acidity and sharp but smoothed, almost dusty tannin. Longer finish of granular soil, haunting red fruit, brier, steely backbone. The vineyard is the star here.

Gevrey Jacques Tasting (Chicago + Zoom): 00/06 pair. An awkward 2006 that shows the ripeness of the vintage with interesting spice-filled ripe cherry but an angular and sharp palate presence that is un-integrated. Perhaps it just needs time, but the ripeness of fruit gives me some pause that it will hold up.

(Clair Bruno Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.Jacques) Medium, medium-plus colour. Also rather tight but there’s a more caramel depth surrounding the tight core of glossy fruit. The structure initially seems completely separate to the fruit - then both come together perfectly. This super wine is clearly vin de garde material, so keep it in the cellar for a few years.

French theme, brought this, double decanted for half hour, cherries, grippy tannins, structured red fruit, lovely juice really
