  • The class here is pretty obvious despite the feeling that a few more years are needed for it to relax and unfurl into a true beauty. Lovely deep brambly fruit and a super svelte mouth texture compensate for a little lack of layers on the night. Masculine, aristocratic and just a little aloof.

  • Dense and quite tight. Taut silk. Tightens in the glass. After a promising start, this tightens rather than relaxes. A tad stroppy on the night. **(**)

  • Hmmm.
The wine has been stored in my cellar since '99. I bought it in London in '97 and imported it, by air, in '99. No reason to suspect that it was exposed to any exceptional levels of heat/cold on the way to my cellar. When I cut the foil off, the inside of the foil was wet with a little bit of wine. The cork was recessed by about 1/8 inch, or just enought to call it 'recessed'. The cork popped out easily, and lead me to believe that the integrity of the cork was not that great. The wine smelled ok, but not 'great'. No burst of kirsch or cherries. Taste was just too acidic for me. There's fruit in there, but w/o the kirsch and with the higher levels of acid, just not what I'm looking for in red Burg. I agree that '96 was a high acid year, but I'd guess that the most fruit forward of all the VR vineyards with be Suchots. Anyway, maybe it's a bottle problem. I'll give another a shot next weekend and see if my case had a problem somewhere along the line.
