  Tight mouthfeel, with tart acidity and astringent tannin. Concentrated flavours of red cherry and blackberry, with background notes of black leather and mint. Enough tannin and acidity to be good with food, but enough fruit to be good on its own.

Hardly developed, despite Tyrrell’s own website Vintage Chart calling this inaugural vintage at peak drinking now. Palate is ripe, savoury, with fruit flavours all on the tart and fresh end of the red fruit spectrum; no jam or raisin or prune here. It’s medium bodied at most, with low/medium dusty tannins not evidently deriving much from oak, medium acidity, and a medium length savoury finish. This was sub-$30 on release as I recall - that’s a pretty decent wine for that kind of money. This will happily develop for another five years easily.

  {screwcap, 14%} Crimson ruby colour. Vivid nose of cranberry, white pepper. Sandy too, not that there is an aroma like that. Palate is ripe with crisp, tart red fruit; cherry, cranberry. Savoury sandy character more obvious here, with finely gritty medium tannins, largely grape-derived (entire production was aged in one 2700l French vat). So, minimal oak, medium/high acidity, giving it a real lift. It’s almost medium-bodied, dry and crisp and almost astringent, but without a lot of presence beyond the mid-palate. Medium length finish. Pretty decent, a cut above a quaffed, true to Hunter tradition (the good ones).

  lovely boysenberry, crunchy red bits. Red spice, green tobacco, earth, hunter leather, balance finesse and power. Tannin great and fantastic acid work again. Natural. Nothing out of step. Excellent wine

  Hunter Valley 2019 Trip; 3/8/2019-3/9/2019: Earthy, cherry and red currant - good mix of red fruits and more savoury notes. Well balanced, this has moderate depth and good length, Feels composed and very good value for money still. Will look forward to the '18.
