  • 2023 Domaine Oyamada BOW! Blanc

An...eclectic blend of Delaware, Petit Manseng, and Roussanne.

I'm generally quite okay with vitis labrusca but it's presented in a somewhat unlikeable manner here.

To start with there's quite a bit of foxiness both on the nose and palate. That's then followed by an unusual savouriness and something akin to dried apricot.

Then there's a bunch of spiky acidity and a short, watery finish.

Overall just really incongruent and thin. Bummer.

  • 2010 La Stoppa Barbera della Stoppa Emilia IGT

Found this in a bargain bin for 50 SGD (yes, that qualifies as bargain here) but i'd have no problems paying full retail price for this.

For 14 years old this wine is still fresh and juicy as can be, with tons of fruit and a distinctly rustic profile. There's a little bit of brett that doesn't get in the way, and works remarkably well with the profile here.

Structurally this is on the smaller side with ultra-suave tannins and a thinner mouthfeel than you might expect for how intense the fruit is.

  • 2020 Granmonte Syrah Heritage

It was interesting having this after a month of tasting syrah from all over the world.

I suppose there's no real analoque for syrah from Thailand but it definitely comes across as a cross between Barossa and California.

It tastes really, REALLY ripe and has tons of fruit but none of the soft florality and pepper of the Northern Rhone, or even mint and eucalyptus of Aussie shiraz. So what we're left with is lots of red and black fruit and a good dose of oak.

What's strange is that this is 12.5% ABV and has really soft tannins.

I checked and found out this was harvested at 23-24 brix, so in reality this should reach 13.5% ABV at best but there's a little residual sugar here.

Even then it's not green at all and really intense on the palate, but not hot. Breaks lots of rules and really quite puzzling. Also - 41 SGD, which i'd say is pretty good value overall, and not just for the novelty.
