  • 2019 Weingut Mann Spätburgunder Calx

Out in the western parts of Germany’s Rheinhessen region, a place that's literally called the land of the thousand hills, there’s this cool, foresty area stretching from the village of Wöllstein, dubbed Rheinhessische Schweiz (or Swiss Rheinhessen). Nestled among these storybook hills in a small village called Ecklesheim, you’ll find Weingut Mann. Andreas Mann runs the show here, bringing a fresh vibe to the place. He’s all about keeping the legacy of classic wine vibes alive (think top-tier Riesling and some seriously smooth Spätburgunder) but isn’t afraid to mix things up.

This Pinot Noir comes from a 10-hectare vineyard in Rheinhessen. Spends 23 months in foudres (barrels that hold more than 1000 litres of wine). I’ve haven’t had a wine like this in a long time, one where the Brett is so well-integrated with the fruit that it gives the impression that you’re drinking a blue cheese infused cherry juice. Sounds weird as fuck, but trust me, it works in the most bizarre way. You can also find these types of wines in southern Rhone, but with a bit more punch to them.

Opened in a restaurant, drank one glass, closed the bottle and took it home. Needs like 24 hours of air, so goddamn tight. Opened up the next evening, but still quite youthful. Fresh raspberry, strawberry, redcurrant. Undertones of twigs, mocha, sandpaper, dried roses & violets. Palate is big, but not ripe in any sense. A punch of tannins balances out beautifully with the high acidity. Long finish. Needs a lot of time in the bottle, but this is just pure deliciousness and elegance in a bottle.

The funniest thing about this one is that it’s sealed with both a crown cap and a cork - it’s like wearing triple layers in a blizzard. Protection is important. This is blend of Aligoté and Gamay, made in a rosé pet-nat. Golden sunset color in the glass. First impression of the aroma is dried apricot. But it stops there, it doesn’t expand in any direction. Feels a bit stuffy, missing on refreshment factor. Big chew of fruit in the mouth to finish. Not quite what I’m looking for in a pet-nat but it might be at an appealing edge to some.

7/29/2018 9:22:00 PM - Thank you, grapenomad, my Drouhin 2015 note was for their Chablis 1er as I wrote, so I made that correction.
