2020 Mt. Difficulty Pinot Noir Bannockburn
5/14/2024 - Callum's Corkers Likes this wine: 93 Points
Decanted 3 hrs in wide-bottomed ship’s decanter. Kitchen temperature. Riedel PN glass.
N….medium+ intensity of savoury dried brown herb, dusty barrel; then a touch of saddle room, a hint of cigar. Lovely Nose, and it feels that with cellar time it’ll get even more interesting - clear potential here.
C…light red, looks L to M body.
T…..at 4 yrs already a lovely glass of NW Pinot - New World yet there seems a touch of Burgundy about this Otago wine. Savoury flavours, interesting red fruit, pretty much a Dry red, soft tannins, enough acid, a nice balance, a touch of elegance which feels like it’ll get better.
Already an interesting glass of wine yet feels will deliver more later on.
QPR?….costs around £30 and feels worth every penny of that. Good VFMoney. If it was a village-level red burgundy I’m guessing they’d want £60 retail/£100+ restaurant.

2021 Prophets Rock Dry Riesling
5/11/2024 - Callum's Corkers Likes this wine: 94 Points
As per last month’s note and 92/93 score.
This now a 94.
But Nose is better: richer fruit, seductive ripe crushed quince, some Golden Queen peach, toffee/sweet oak. (Couldn’t get any of that on previous taste.
C…..light gold, solid medium body.
T….pretty much as previous note, including gentle white tannins - almost grapefruit pithy.
QPR?….feels worth £30+. Costs around £20 at the Wine Soc, so pretty good VFMoney. Definitely buying more 2021.

2018 The Wine Society Meursault Les Narvaux The Society's 150th Anniversary

Cork seal. Tasted chilled. No decant.
Lovely earthy mineral profile up front, perhaps too much oak currently - 6 yrs from vintage - and it seems to sit heavily; fruit includes sliced dried banana, sweet(ish) oak, soft ripe lemons, ripe orange skin apple, a touch of ground almonds, zero tannins but just enough acid; it seems in balance and to be drinking very well even at just 6 yrs out, there’s just a bit of wet river stone which eventually arrives, it didn’t leap out the gate; sits near medium dry rather than genuinely dry.
This seems an interesting glass of well-made basic White Burgundy from a Wine Soc’ supply deal with L Jadot, though not as ‘interesting’ as the WS’s back label copywriters want you to believe it is, I think.
“Overlaying the apple and peach flavours with a gentle nuttiness.”
What, really?
QPR/VFM?…..feels worth £30 bottle minimum. I’d be happy to pay that. Not mature, but feels decent enough to get a little better in the cellar but maybe only by 30% margin. I’d buy more.
