Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 50 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by The Guzz on 12/9/2023: Definitely a leaner vintage. Nose is pretty, bright dark berry, floral, underbrush, subtle olive. Palate is lean for Gonon. Has some of the sweet cassis but is green overall. I don't see much upside on this one. (370 views)
Tasted by James Kim on 10/30/2022 & rated 93 points: My last bottle. Stood up for several weeks and then decanted off sediment for 1h then back into bottle. Complex aromas of olives, blackberries, cherries, brambles, and a bit of roasted meat. Palate with starts with just ripe blackberry and cherry fruits followed by olives, game meats, and brambles. Nice acids with medium+ tannins on a medium body. Bright and elegant but still some muscle. Excellent showing esp. given the tough vintage. (602 views)
Tasted by thomasito2001 on 3/27/2022 flawed bottle: Slight stable smell, together with evolved fruit profile and dominance of aromatic herbs. Palate is thin to medium bodied, elegant but lacking stuffing. Acidity is in balance but the wine requires food to be drunken with. Not a modern Rhone, quite the opposite. I wonder whether this bottle shows some defaults or if it is the result of a challenging vintage (913 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 2/7/2022 & rated 91 points: Will T’s St Joseph @ Hawksmoor (Hawksmoor, Guildhall): Slightly dull ruby. Nicely peppery nose. Ready and with a spot of character. Lacks some depth and length, but interesting and ready to go. Good effort given the more difficult vintage. Bare **** (1362 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/31/2021 & rated 93 points: Served double blind. Olives galore. Like, to the (almost) detriment of everything else. A little smoky as well, I guess. Unmistakeably northern Rhone syrah, though. The palate is thinning out, and shows quite a bit of age as well. The general lack of distinct fruitiness had me thinking this was one of the relatively mature vintages, perhaps 2000 or 2004. 2008 was also a contender but I found the fruit more advanced here than it ought to have been. High acid and saline elements; relatively little fruit remaining. Given the age I was thinking that Côte Rôtie would have been the guess, but with 2008 St. Joseph would also have been in play. As a postscript, it's been years since I've had this -- previously it was back in the day when Tru was still operating, and this was sitting on the list for under $100, and you could have it as often as you wanted, too...  Tasted by rlove on 3/4/2020 & rated 91 points: Black pepper pot pourri nose, red fruit palate. Lighter weight, higher acidity, juuuuuust enough concentration of fruit to keep this from veering toward austerity. As a lighter, elegant style, with fine purity, this works nicely. Drink over the next couple years. (1763 views)
Tasted by jjct on 9/11/2019: Austere at first, all tannins, acid, menthol, and dirt. After some time in the decanter, some lovely perfumed fruit emerged, crunchy, well balanced, peppery and earthy. I had no problem finishing the bottle and wish I had more. Lots of time left for this. (1281 views)
Tasted by maxima on 3/18/2018 flawed bottle: Bouchonnée! (2102 views)
Tasted by bobbylion on 10/24/2017 & rated 89 points: Another ,375 bottle, which I left open for 24 hours. Much better than my last one - either bottle variation or the airation. I am hoping for the latter. Yes, this is a classic northern Rhone syrah. Not the best, but perfectly OK. (1956 views)
Tasted by LT98 on 3/28/2017 & rated 91 points: I wonder if there are different bottlings of this because I don't feel like I am drinking the same wine as the recent mostly negative tasters. This is a classic St. Joseph - not the weightiest, but extremely well balanced and without any significant flaws. I wish I had more. (2327 views)
Tasted by bobbylion on 2/12/2017 & rated 86 points: Decanted 2 hrs now. Hope it will get better. From 0,375 Bl. Unfortunatelly have 4-5 more of these. Slightly bitter, acidic and sort of neutral smell. Lots of menthol. Could be German pinot noir in not the best possible way. Sorry... (2110 views)
(2184 views)
Tasted by beatles on 6/2/2016 & rated 87 points: Great Gonon Tasting (Frederiksberg): In the company of neighbouring vintages, this falls through; elegant, yes, even charming, but also lean and short, somewhat. Drink up. (1951 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 6/2/2016: Aromatic nose, acidic. This is a very lean wine, lacks meat on the bone. Still a very enjoyable wine but compared to the other vintages this is weak. Drink up. (1671 views)
Tasted by Sennma on 5/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Just delicious...classic white pepper nose. Grippy with a long life ahead. (2354 views)
Tasted by acyso on 5/15/2015 & rated 93 points: HDH auction tasting at Tru; 5/15/2015-5/16/2015 (Chicago, IL): An absolutely bright and fantastic bottle of syrah. Red fruited, floral, stemmy, and very feminine. Pretty and cheerful, with intense acidity, this has plenty of life ahead of it, but given how nice it is now, it's hard to say no. (3305 views)
Tasted by acyso on 11/21/2014 & rated 93 points: A very enticing nose that was simultaneously lean and fruit-forward, with a light touch of barnyard funk and black peppercorn. The palate is somehow still very juicy, and this doesn't appear to have shut down yet (or maybe it's back in business already). There's a good bit of stem and earthy funk, but this is dominated by a bright red cherry note. Acidity for days, but another year or two might smooth out the tannins a bit. A very cheerful and outgoing bottle of syrah, if a bit ditzy... but that's not necessarily a bad thing, is it? (3165 views)
Tasted by James Kim on 8/16/2014 & rated 92 points: From memory. So good. Great acids and still youthful, crunchy and light for syrah. But still had that meaty gaminess with herbs and olives.Nice finish. Went so well with beef bourgignon. Love Gonon. (883 views)
Tasted by salil on 7/1/2014 flawed bottle: Gonons and Rougeards (Riverpark, NYC): Something seems off here. There's some bright berried fruit and pepper apparent, but also a strong stewed tomato-like note on the nose and the palate seems unusually thin. Wonder if this is slightly heat damaged. (The bottle was gray market - not from Kermit or Chambers.) (4158 views)
Tasted by Michael Davidson on 5/16/2014: Really drinking well right now. Light bodied, but good concentration. Red fruit, savory elements, lots of pepper. Everything I want in a syrah. (2866 views)
(2767 views)
Tasted by Chris Newport on 12/15/2013: Outstanding bottle. Needed a decant and about 30 minutes to really about up... but this is really drinking well. A little lean and acidic compared to some of the more fruit forward vintages, but just enough fruit to keep everything in balance. Pepper, violets, a little meatiness.. really benchmark syrah. (2356 views)
Tasted by Michael Davidson on 8/14/2013: Peppery for sure, but in a good way. Good blue fruit on the palate to go with the pepper and acidity. Nice structure. Lighter weight than more recent vintages. Delicious now, still has a while to go! (2532 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
