Tasted by brooklynguy on 3/17/2024: I’ve had this wine several times in the past few years and this bottle showed least well. The fruit is less vibrant and there’s been no emergence of interesting mature characteristics to compensate. Comes off as a bit simple actually. Two and three years ago the fruit was bright and complex, and the wine well balanced with acidity. It’s still good but the fruit is quieter and in this vintage perhaps there’s not a whole lot else going on. Or maybe I caught it on an off night. Based on this, I’d enjoy these sooner rather than later. (1107 views)
Tasted by jviz on 10/23/2023: Houston Northern Rhone Blowout: very brief impression, not quite on the level of the 2010 but extremely delicious and should also age quite a long time. Did not suffer any roasted aromas or notes. (2169 views)
Tasted by overkloud on 10/18/2023 & rated 95 points: Ripe dark fruit, pepper notes floral aroma. On the palate, great concentration with balance of acidity. soft tannin mixed in the background. An extraordinary, complete wine. (1537 views)
Tasted by Putnam Weekley on 10/1/2023 & rated 90 points: Inspirational competence. Dense, impacted residue of flavor information. Sweet. Spiced. Leathered. Where does it lead? Ambition and antiquity. Jam smoke. Sour figs, roots, and raspberries. Inky red stains. Appropriate aromatic intensity. Who abandons whom? 91

duly handicapped after 48 hours open, the remains of the bottle tend to expose the show-horse aspects of this wine. No egregious cosmetic vandalism, mind you (no fudge, no oak tea), just, a vague, relative lack of commitment and originality. 90 (1934 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 7/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Bottle breathed. Dark cherry, chocolate, purple fruit, black olives, stemmy. Still too young. Very good ripeness control at only 13%, rather refreshing. 92+ (1989 views)
Tasted by Vas19 on 5/28/2023 & rated 93 points: In a nice spot. (2094 views)
Tasted by coremill on 5/5/2023 & rated 92 points: At first, stemmy and reductive; decanting helped immensely. Lots of dark fruit and classic cracked pepper/olive notes. Quite a bit of fruity flesh, with the masses of fruit mostly subsuming the fine tannins. A big wine for St Joseph. Relatively undeveloped, this drinks very well now but is far from mature. (1694 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 3/5/2023: 13% alcohol. The cork is very short but it shows no wine penetration; lovely smell of olive from the cork. Decanted an hour ahead. Dark colour with some thinning at the edge.
Superb nose mixing black olive, liquorice and violet in an harmonious way. The mouth is significantly more austere in part because of significant acidity; still very satisfying but in a somewhat stern mode. Plenty of juiciness and wild berries with that black olive again. Very good grip but no harsh tannins.
Very good by any standard, but the enjoyment does not correlate with the current price (167€ according to IdW, which is absolutely crazy, about four times its enjoyment value for me). Never mind, I paid little more than 20€ en primeur, and I have no intention of letting the crazy market interfere with my enjoyment of monitoring my remaining bottles over the years to come.  Tasted by MLipton on 2/8/2023: Opened up at the close of a difficult day. Yes, yes. Yes, this close to my Playonic ideal of Syrah: generous fruit, green olive, leather , great structure and weight. No hurry to drink these , but already giving a lot of pleasure . (1902 views)
Tasted by GAET on 11/13/2022 & rated 93 points: Robe : Violine, pratiquement pas de traces d'évolution.

Très bien ++ (2050 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 6/2/2022: First taste of a Gonon St Joseph in a long time. This one did nothing to diminish my respect and appreciation for them. Still plenty of primary fruit that offers a ton of licorice and olive flavors. Drinking very young but there is remarkable depth and concentration. On a night of some amazing older wines, this "youngster" was more than impressive. (2323 views)
Tasted by xwine on 5/14/2022: Didn't pay enough attention to this. It was delicious, and certainly drinking well at this stage. (2217 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/15/2022 & rated 92 points: From a cool cellar (mine), this is very fresh, very young still. Tasted vis-avis the 2014, this is more full bodied with accent on the dark fruit, the olives, som hanged meat, still this is very much a Saint-Joseph - and not an Hermitage. Will live 10+ years, I think.

Tasted by Paul D on 2/5/2022 & rated 90 points: 3/9, excellent cork. Decanted 1/2 an hour.
Deep ruby/garnet core with a very narrow pale ruby rim.
A touch reticent on the nose slowly opening to show purple fruits, spice and some black olive but lacking the aromatics of some other vintages (06,07,10). Medium/full bodied on the palate, purple fruits again, black olive, a touch of meatiness, soft tannins, decent fresh/vibrant acids, good length slightly grippy finish. Has definitely opened out since last drunk but still with plenty in hand - to at least 2030. (2736 views)
Tasted by maxima on 12/29/2021 & rated 90 points: Encore bien en forme.
Digeste et minéral, les mures, les violettes
et les notes animal sont bien là.
Belle finale bien suave avec juste assez
d'amertume.
Super bon! (2787 views)
Tasted by don_quichotte on 10/4/2021 & rated 88 points: I love all things gonon but this one was pretty underwhelming. It’s unmistakenly Syrah, but I misss the silky tannins and black olive fragrance that I usually associate with the domaine’s reds. Wouldn’t stand out in a blind tasting. (2633 views)
Tasted by kuumies on 10/3/2021: Dark as midnight and deadly serious on the nose with huge, intense sweet blackberry fruit. Minerally and restrained with floral hints - not showing a lot of nuance but still drop dead gorgeous. On the palate medium-bodied and dense with ton of extremely beautiful, though very primary fruit. Tighly coiled with considerable, controlled power. Linear with mouthpuckering tannins. The fruit quality is just excellent, the purity is unparalleled. A chiselled wine nearing Saint Joseph perfection but 10-15 years too young. Singular, despite being a baby offers a lot of pleasure. (2445 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Made from grapes that have been grown organically on predominantly granite soil. Fermented spontaneously in open-top oak fermenters with 2-week maceration, stems and all. Aged for 24 months in old foudres and 600-liter demi-muids. Bottled with ~50 mg/l SO2. 13% alcohol.

Quite dense and almost fully opaque reddish-black color. The brooding nose feels rather closed at first, not giving much, but slowly opening up with air, exhibiting clean and vibrant aromas of ripe blackberries, some floral notes of violets, light dark-toned notes of boysenberries and blueberries, a little bit of plummy fruit, a hint of licorice root and a touch of bright red cherries. The overall impression is more fruit-driven than showing those classic pepper-and-olive notes more typical of Gonon. The wine is firm, assertive and dead-serious on the palate with a dense, medium body and intense flavors of fresh blackberries and blueberries, quite pronounced stony minerality, some ferrous notes of blood, light umami notes of gamey meat, a little bit of licorice root, a sweet, vibrant hint of dark plummy fruit and a spicy touch of pepper. Although the wine doesn't feel as big as most of the other wines in our tasting (mainly Cornas), this wine seems to have more gravitas than most of the wines we had and probably packs the most structure of all the wines with its remarkably high acidity for a 2009 Syrah, supported by ripe, moderately pronounced and still quite grippy tannins. The finish is clean, savory and rather tannic with very long flavors of youthful, brambly blackberries, some boysenberry tones, a little bit of dark plummy fruit, light stony mineral tones, a floral hint of violets and a touch of meaty umami.

A real powerhouse of a Syrah. The power and concentration became even more evident as we progressed our way through our mainly Cornas lineup of Northern Rhône Syrah - this wine turned out to be not only the most structured and tightly-knit wine we had, but also the most youthful, showing no obvious sense of development whatsoever now. Sure, the wine doesn't feel like it was bottled yesterday, but unlike the other wines (most from 2003-2008) showed at least some evolved fruit tones - some even quite tertiary character - this Gonon was still a mere baby, miles away from its apogee. Based on how closed the wine was upon opening, it feels like this wine isn't even in its optimal drinking window yet. Although the hot 2009 vintage has made this wine into a somewhat more fruit-forward and less savory iteration of the typical Gonon style, having very little of those classic black pepper and olive markers, this is still a very stern, remarkably dry and noticeably structure-driven effort for a 2009 Syrah. The wine is a bit on the bigger side for Gonon, yet there is very little extra meat anywhere - this is really stunning stuff. As the wine feels it isn't showing its best yet, my score is a bit on the conservative side, but nevertheless the class here is undeniable and this wine is really going to be something once it really starts to peak. Wait for another 10-15 years or more. At 36€ (approximately 10 years ago) the value here is just ludicrous. (3202 views)

Tasted by platpeeps on 7/6/2021 & rated 94 points: Perfectly poised and balanced; structure, fruit and richness without going over the top. Beautiful expression. (2628 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 6/11/2021 & rated 93 points: Blackcurrant & blackberry supported with liquorice spice and black pepper, yet set in a lovely rich creamy texture. Lovely lift and drinking superbly well. (2456 views)

Tasted by pbaek on 1/5/2021: Wonderful entry, a nose of flowers, cracked pepper, green olives and fruit that’s not as dark as I would expect. There’s good lift on the palate, lovely restrained fruit, silky tannins, and gentle spices. Still rather primary, there is a lot more to come here in terms of complexity, but this is more lose and relaxed now. If I had many bottles of this I’d drink a bottle every 12 months. (2933 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 12/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Since tasting the last bottle around 18 months ago this has now lost its puppy fat and is now a sleek and elegant thoroughbred. Freshly crushed blackberry fruit infused with a note of liquorice and seasoned with black pepper. The structure is enriched with glycerol but the tannins and freshness keep it lively through to a strong finish. An outstanding wine. (2398 views)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
