Maybe a bit past its window. Somewhat swampy out of the bottle, with considerable sediment on the screen of the funnel. On first taste, there were some nice cherry and vanilla notes, and I had some optimism. After 3 hours of decant time, the swampy quality had dissipated, but the finer fruit flavors seem to have gone as well. The raisin taste was a little too overpowering. Not a terrible bottle, but not the best Shiraz either.

Wine tasted in 28 OZ Riedel. Upon opening: Brick red in color This wine provides aromas of dried black cherry, menthol, black pepper, and incense. On the palate: concentrated cherry and tart cranberry. These flavors carry on with the essence of vanilla, very soft silky tannins with an intense dried fruit finish.

Opened this just in time (July 2009). Edges have a brownish tint. Dark fruit and licorice on the nose matches the taste, with just enough acidity left to keep it together. I'm not a big Shiraz fan, maybe I'm just particular, but after opening this a little hesitantly it made my day. I heard a published wine guru gave it a 93, and for once I have to agree it's that good, or better.

GV perhaps put off by the atypical profile of this Barossa shiraz. If you are expecting to be walloped by a mass of super-ripe raisiny fruit then this will disappoint. It has a dark inky black fruit color and a very finely tuned clear aroms of sweet berries. Modest weight, dates and raisins, smooth and glycerin as you might expect from shiraz. Okay, not spectacular but superior to the GV rating.
