  • Bordeaux + Napa pirates (Tøyen, Oslo): Slow oxed 3 hours, followed 5 hours

My god, this is high alcohol, and it shows.. (15.5%)
    Dark and hot nose.

Palate has so much coffee and chocolate, harsh tannins. With time, something resembling fruit grew in the background, but too little, too late for me. Not a fun drink tonight

  • I was invited for a "Cult Napa wines" dinner with some Napa-kings in the KL community, and I have to say I was ... stressed. I do not have any "big" Napas, so I brought my best along.. this 2016 Continuum Proprietary Red.

From Tim and Marcia Mondavi's Pritchard Hill winery estate, this is a unique blend of 46% Cab, a very high 31% Cab Franc, 18% PV and 5% Merlot. Deep garnet and nearly black in colour, I prepared this with a 3 hour bottle-breathe which did not do the wine justice. Give it a long full decant, or better yet, wait some years.

Initially closed, there were some aromatics of blueberries and blackberries towards the end of the dinner. What immediately hit me (and R too) was the ultra long finish, at over 1 minute. Spectacular!

This is full bodied, and still very tight, but the tannins are super fine and the wine demonstrates so much intensity and power. Some iron and minerality on the mid-palate and finish. Always with freshness, there is even nuances of graphite and more dark cjoclate too.

Plenty of rich black fruits, and there is clearly such potential in this wine which has yet to be revealed. It is way too early, and I would not open my remaining bottles until the end of this decade. Purchased at BKK Suvarnabhumi airport, for about USD 280, this is certainly going to be spectacular down the road.

  • Opened around 6PM into a decanter for a few hours of air. Poured back in the bottle around 8PM and served 30 mins later.

This wine was bold and ripe, while being mostly integrated. The initial decant helped significantly and it continued to get better in the glass over the 2 hours we enjoyed it, however it was fairly evident it was opened a little too early. The tannins weren't as plush or velvety as I was expecting and while I dislike the term 'angular', there was a hint of it with the first glass. These 'criticisms' are really very small in relative context, as it was a great bottle and enjoyed by my wife and I. In the years ahead, this is a 97-98pt wine, but it's not there yet.

I'd give this wine at least another year before opening and even then, I think another 2-4 years would be best. It's approachable and very good right now, but it's best years are ahead of it.

  • Well balanced and simply luscious.

  • Needed at least 2+ hours but it is a brilliant dark and brooding wine. I'm excited to have more. Exceptional experience.
