  • Tasted this at the Almaviva Wine Dinner organised by Infinite Wines at the Nest @ One Farrer.

Made up of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Carménère, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.

Another cool weather vintage wine. Rounded and smooth.

  • Black cherry, chocolate and sweet vanilla on the nose. Palate is black fruit, more chocolate and sweetness. American oak but subtle. Perfectly balanced acidity and sweetness. Secondary and tertiary flavours aplenty. Tannins refined giving structure but unobtrusive. An absolutely superb wine.

  • This is my first Almaviva. On the initial nose, reminds me of Clos Apalta (my reigning fave for Chilean). it's got great depth and length, but in terms of flavour complexity, somehow I think that the oak, green notes of cab franc and dark berry fruits are not fully integrated, which is not surprising considering its age. Acidity is medium, and tannins are soft (medium). I think this wine would be hitting its stride perfectly 5 years from now, it may still be a little too early to consume, the tertiary notes are only barely starting to emerge.

  • This is the fourth vintage of this wine which I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying since the 1999 vintage. Consistently outstanding with the ability to age for 15-20+ years. This always leads with a dark loamy soil entry, followed by juicy blackberry, ripe black cherry; crunchy black plum, dark chocolate, black coffee, herbal tea, and sweet baking spices. Perfect balance of black fruits, soft tannins, integrated sweet oak, and medium acidity. Perfect accompaniment to grilled, thick, double cut lamb chops; grilled mixed peppers, onions, and whole mushrooms; and baked potato salad. Finishes focused and long. In the development stage; can drink now with hearty food and decanting, but this might drink well for another 15+ years. World class and quite impressive.
