  • Very pretty wine. Deep ruby red, almost purple. Serious nose, with blackberry, oil-cured niçoise olives, bacon fat and garrigue. Just as much depth and complexity on the palate. Well extracted but not overdone. Dry with medium acidity, supple, velvety tannins, caressing mouthfeel, imperceptible alcohol. Long, polished finish. Excellent effort that brought back Pax memories.

  • My previous bottle of this was 3/2017, and the additional time has been good to this wine. Opened but not decanted for over an hour with my wine group at a NYC restaurant. It was our WOTN. I had been disappointed in earlier vintages of Martinelli's Syrahs. But this vintage was outstanding. Long finish. Full bodied. And despite its 15.8% listed alcohol, it didn't feel hot. We had it alongside a 2014 Syrah from Cornas. And while it is hard to compare the two, because they are so different, we all preferred the Martinelli.

  • Popped 'n poured in a restaurant, were my wine group had it with a roasted hare and a spiced smoked goat's neck. I am usually disappointed in Martinelli's Syrahs, but this one was a hit, as it stood up to ,and was an excellent compliment to the Goat's neck. WA gave this 96 points and I think they got it right. The label says 15.8% alcohol, but it carries the weight well. It didn't feel hot or overly alcoholic.
