Very intense and surprisingly youthful neon green color. Very rich and complex nose with intense, sweet-toned aromas of peach, wizened tropical fruits, some lychee jam, a little bit of poached pear, heady floral hints of roses and a touch of beeswax. The wine is broad, ripe and oily on the palate with quite full body and intense, sweet-toned flavors of peach-driven stone fruits, some wizened tropical fruits, a little bit of something wild and slightly funky, light floral tones of rosewater, a hint of lychee and a touch of golden raisins. The wine is hinting at sweetness, yet it is quite high in acidity and rather mineral at the same time, making the wine feel remarkably fresh and pretty structured for a Gewurztraminer. The finish is very long, very slightly sweet and really complex with persistent flavors of heady exotic spices, stony minerality, some honeyed richness, a little bit of beeswax, light rosewater tones and a hint of lychee jam.
Just like the vintage 2007 was, this wine too is one of the most stunning dry Gewurztraminers there is. Overall this wine shows a bit more youthful character compared to the more wizened and leathery style exhibited by the vintage 2007, but both of them show remarkable freshness, focus and intensity for the variety. Truly a textbook example of dry Gewurztraminer - it is hard to imagine a dry Gewurztraminer performing better than this. Although this vintage is lacking a bit of the developed complexity of the vintage 2007, it feels like this wine could continue to develop even much further from here, gaining even more depth and complexity with age. Expect the rating to go up over the years. Very highly recommended.
