One of the Napa Valley wines that demonstrates how Cabernet Sauvignon from California can be as great as Bordeaux wines. Pitch black with an inch pour, lushly textured, powerfully tannic, and deliciously fruity. Every bit as great with aging as Bordeaux, amply demonstrated from being grately improved at 19 years old. From the great Sacrashe vineyard atop the Rutherford region of Napa. Finally, even superbly priced at the $30 I paid.

Exclusively made using Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Sacrashe Vineyard, one of the greatest vineyards on Pritchard Hill. Tasted the opened bottle for 4 days. At 17 years old, opaque black with a thin lighter red around the edge of the glass, with no taste of oxidation or deterioration. Aromas of black currant and blackberry. The sip remains both highly acidic and firmly tannic. The swallow is the best part of the taste - deliciously fruity, a more rounded texture, and superb concentration. Overall, a great treat from the fine 2001 vintage in Napa, that will get even better with additional years of bottle age.

2001 proved to the one of the best California vintages for aging wines, here exhibited by a 16 year wine opaque black to the edge of a half inch pour. Classic Cabernet nose of black currant, blackberry, and black cherry. The sip begins smooth and fruity but high acidity and still firm drying tannin grip the wine both before and after the swallow. Overall, big, dense, powerful, and still 5 years away from reaching its peak of quality, when the wine finally becomes caressing, fully integrated, and seamless.

Bought this on a close-out at $50 so not sure of the storage over the past 8 years but this was not drinking well. The color was a fine dark violet but on the nose not giving much but some pruney fruit. On the palate this was hot and alcoholic tasting despite being decanted and served at 55 degrees. If I paid $20 I might have rated this a few points higher but yuch at this price.

Mature. Well balanced and components all well integrated. Just enough fruit to say California rather than Bordeaux.
