Quite a shy nose right from the bottle. This needs a good decanting of at least 2 hours to release the aromatics. More vegetal notes and less fruit forward than previous vintage. Very high level of acidity but it is balanced by the juicy fruits and smooth tannins. Medium-bodied with an opaque structure not letting much of the fine elements through. Some funky tar and toasty oak evaporate after sometime in the glass, it then finished cleanly. Good to hold on to this for a few more years before drinking it. 89-90 pts

Tasted after a 1.5hr decant. Dark ruby in colour with lovely aromas of slightly herbal leather & chocolate. On the palate, full bodied tart & juicy black fruit, cassis, blackberry, slightly earthy, chocolate, herbal & floral, well integrated oak, medium to high acidity, high soft tannins with a long finish to tart black berries, leather & black pepper. Tasting a little young & aggressive at this time, but will be interesting to see the aging progression.

On the PnP, without food and on sight and smell only: Wynns is medium ruby colour and looks broody compared to the lighter coloured challenger wine. I’m instinctively like broody and moody. Initially the aroma of blackcurrant boiled sweets with cigar revealing itself shortly afterwards. So there’s the archetypal tobacco and blackcurrant thing going on. Some sandalwood too.
20 minutes in, sniff and first taste: The tobacco elements in the Wynns seem more linear and thus more focussed. Mrs Wongstonn is calling out flavours I am soooo not getting like barnyard and fish. But I do agree with her that it has improved aromatically after 20 minutes. Vanilla still there and there’s a sweetness coming through.
Adding food the equation: homemade Wagyu beefburgers. The Wynns came into its own. It felt like a harmonic note was sweetly resonating above the food. Good value cab sav.

Smoky currants, violets, and subtle bell pepper on the nose. Medium-full palate with dark berry flavours and high acidity through the finish.

A great Black Label, drinking well young. Give it a bit of air.
