  • 2016 Michel Gahier Chardonnay Arbois Les Crêts

We drank this after a bottle of Domaine du Pelican Arbois Chardonnay 2014, and this bottle seemed to contain all the characteristics of the first plus extra levels of complexity and richness. That is, at the base there is a mineral wine with a sneakily high level of citrus-zest acidity. On top of that, there is a controlled oxidation, with flavors of smoke and gasoline and nuts -- challenging and exciting. Unmistakably a wine from Jura, and unmistakably the product of a master of his craft.

I loved it in its current incarnation, but the high acidity suggests that it could continue to evolve for a long time.

  • 2014 Domaine du Pélican Chardonnay Arbois

We're drinking our way through a case of this. Consistently high quality -- a very balanced chardonnay with more mineral than fruit, more Burgundy than Jura. The flavors are quite intense, so it can accompany more strongly flavored food.

  • NV Egly-Ouriet Champagne Les Prémices

We're fans of the Egly-Ouriet wines, though we've been drinking fewer of them as the prices have risen. This is a newish cuvee at the less expensive end of the range -- equal parts Pinot Noir, chardonnay, and pinot Meunier from a small plot in Trigny -- that we hadn't tried before. Our bottle was 2019 wine disgorged in 2023.

The wine has a slight copper tinge, fine bubbles. Surprisingly restrained acidity for a young champagne. It has all the Egly character -- richness, an unabashed yeastiness (after 3 years on the lees), but no heaviness -- and is ridiculously easy to drink. So good.

12/18/2020 1:08:00 PM - Hi Talbot61 - thanks for your note. It appears we do have somewhat similar tastes. In recent years, I have transitioned more to Burgundy varietals (mostly Pinot Noir, but some Chardonnay too), and away from the "big" reds. While I still like a good Cabernet or Syrah with my steak or other rich foods, for most other occasions, I prefer to sip Pinot as my "go to" varietal. Enjoy!

12/16/2020 1:25:00 PM - I have found the site helpful at following the wines I have collected over the years. I compare my notes on a given wine to what other people say. Sometimes I find wines hit a sweet spot in someone's note and I will try a bottle before my scheduled time. I enjoy drinking wine mid plateau or later. I hope the site works for you.
