  • 2001 d'Arenberg Shiraz The Dead Arm

A 30 minute decant and this was good to go. Burnished garnet. All secondary aromatics of blackberry fruit with some leather, tobacco and spice notes. On the palate, secondary flavours of very dark fruit, with cherry, umami, iodine and a touch of anise. Mouthwatering acidity with some grippy tannins outlasting the fruit on the longish finish so best consumed with some aged cheeses or heartier dishes. The old vines bearing the fruit for this wine have produced something with tremendous longevity and durability. I have been quite impressed with every bottle enjoyed of this over the past 15 years or so. A poor man's Grange perhaps but so delicious in its own right. Bravo.

  • 2004 Kilikanoon Shiraz Oracle

This drank so much better than a much more evolved bottle consumed a couple of months ago. Deep purple in appearance. Ripe, sweet blackberry fruit with mocha and some iodine notes. Full-bodied mouthful of velvety rich dark fruit flows seamlessly across the palate with some spice and a pronounced dark cherry note. Well-balanced for such a big wine. A superb bottle and very enjoyable.

  • 2010 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino

From magnum. Holding on to a youthful deep garnet colour. Pronounced aromatics of sous-bois, Ceylon tea, leather, olive and some savoury 5-spice notes in the background. This showed none of the pruney notes of previous bottles consumed over the past few years which came across as much more evolved. Full to medium-bodied with flavours of dried dark fruit and some cherry notes. Most of the action was on the front to mid palate. Decent length with a bit of grip persisting on the finish. Delicious now but I can't see further upside.

3/6/2024 7:08:00 AM - I was based in Hong Kong for 20 years and am now in Vancouver for the time being. When in HK, I used to visit Tokyo about 8 times a year on business. I love the city and the food there! My wife is actually fluent in Japanese but has never been to Japan so will try and make that happen in the near future. Have you ever been over this side of the pond?

3/5/2024 9:46:00 PM - Very similar indeed! Yes, I am based in Tokyo. Have you been out this way before?

  • hkbob says:

3/5/2024 6:19:00 PM - Thanks Chiba-san, I can see we have similar tastes across our respective cellars. I look forward to following your tasting notes. Are you based in Japan?

7/21/2023 8:35:00 AM - Hi RemyWP, great to connect with you. I probably saw one of your notes on a wine I either have had or have in my cellar... possibly the '82 Gruaud Larose (which I absolutely love) or the '96 Dom Perignon (which I also love). Yes, the '61 Latour (from an ex-Chateau bottle gifted to me by one of my HK buddies) was a benchmark wine for me, even better than the '82 to my taste. The fun now is trying to find something that moves the bar even higher. So many good wines, so little time... Are you based in Singapore?

7/21/2023 6:54:00 AM - Thank you for the friend request, was there a particular note of mine you saw? Absolutely stunned (and jealous) to see you've tried the 1961 Latour... a worthy 100pt wine I am sure!

2/11/2023 9:00:00 AM - Thanks hrazdiiv - ditto that. Being 3 hours ahead of us on the west coast, I hope you're getting ready to pull the cork on a nice Saturday cellar gem!

2/10/2021 3:24:00 PM - My pleasure! There have been a lot of wines consumed between 2016 and now - I got busy with kids so unfortunately didn't have much time for writing up my tasting notes. I'll make more of an effort going forward. :)

2/10/2021 2:18:00 PM - Thanks for the info. I'll have to check them out the next time I am in Vancouver which, given the pandemic, may not be for a while. You seem to have a sizeable collection of wine, yet since you joined CT in 2016, you have only consumed 5. You really ought to drink more. :-)

2/10/2021 11:32:00 AM - Hi hjjvr, it really depends what you are looking for. For harder to source older vintages, Legacy Wines is quite good. For a broader range of good wines (remember we are in BC which makes it one of the most challenging places on the planet to be a collector), you may look at Marquis Wine Cellar on Davie Street or The Gull Liquor Store in North Van. Also, any of the BCLB Signature Liquor Sores such as the one at Park Royal, Alberni and Bute, or Oakridge. Hope that helps.

2/10/2021 11:12:00 AM - Hello hkbob. I don't know Vancouver very well. Which are the best wine shops in Vancouver?
