  • 2012 St Huberts Cabernet Sauvignon

Deep ruby showing little signs of age.
On the nose black plums, lavender and earth accompanied by secondary notes of charred wood and crushed rock.
The mineral edge also appears on the palate which has blackberry brambly type fruit. Some cedary notes add interest along with tertiary notes of earth and tobacco. The fruit has been dialled down to a more savoury mouthfeel. On the finish the flavours don't linger all that long.
Still present are mouth watering acidity and firm tannins.
I like where this is at the moment, with a nice balance between bottle age and primary black fruit. Having said that, has the sturdy structure for further ageing.

  • 2017 Shaw and Smith Riesling

    Pale lemon-green.
Nose is all apples and limes; perhaps a little white floral but not particularly intense.
The citrus and green fruit flow through on the palate.Clean and fresh with bright acidity; there is better intensity here and indeed persistency on the back palate. Maybe even the barest hint of sweetness from residual sugar?
Appears and tastes young and primary, suggesting and supporting ageing potential.
It's textbook and correct varietal Riesling possessing what you would expect without any wow factor.
Decent enough, if not overly interesting.

  • 2009 Wild Earth Pinot Noir Earth & Sky

A slight haziness to its garnet colour along with orange/brown edges.
A perfumed nose that has red flowers, liquored cherries, cranberry, cola, orange zest, forest floor, and smoke. Very complex with pronounced intensity that escapes the confines of the glass to permeate the surrounding air.
The palate also packs plenty of interest with dried red fruits, turkish delight, more citrus zest, leather and earth.
Like the nose the palate flavours are intense. It's a big mouth filling wine by Pinot standards with noticable warmth from the alcohol on the finish, but there is also fresh lively acidity.
I think this is good to go now, not requiring further ageing.
Certainly at the big end of town; a very new world style. The array of aromas and flavours impressive, as was the intensity. The alcohol a small distraction but otherwise very good.

10/27/2013 3:15:00 PM - Hey Robbie, opened up the '09 and '10 Talbots side by side last night (and I'm still finishing the '10 as I'm writing this). They're both very good quality wines, but it's educational to see them side by side. Interestingly the '09 is more typically Talbot than the '10, but I think they'll both develop nicely. If you're a fan, pick up some '09 so you can follow both!
