  • 2018 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Neighbors Series Lincoln Creek

This is a pleasant wine for happy hour or a casual meal. It’s got some nice Cabernet aromatics. The entry and mid palate are medium body with some oak framing the dark red fruit and crushed rock. The tannins are crisp and the finish is dry but clipped. This shows some hallmarks of Oakville wine, and I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it, but I won’t be seeking it out either. Drink now with 30 minutes of air or lay it down and hope.

  • 2021 Paul Hobbs Pinot Noir Goldrock Estate

This is a very young Pinot, but it has my attention at all times. It’s mauve with a distinctly clear meniscus. The bouquet is effusive and strongly reminiscent of a wine from musigny blown violets and some spice dressed in some light-toast oak. The spicy oaky flavors are dominant but dressed up with sweet strawberries and cherries that are persistent. The long finish is slightly alcoholic and pleasantly drying. Throughout the few hours of enjoyment, it is evolving albeit slow and steady, as if to hint at its evolutionary trajectory. If the oak is judged well, this will be hella good in 10+ years…maybe more like 15. Worth checking out and fairly priced compared to many Sonoma Pinots. Note to self: hands off!!!

  • 2010 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

This has really turned a corner since the last time that I tasted this. The bouquet is classic with violets, wild strawberries, and allspice with a slight touch of sous bois. It’s ethereal and improving over the course of a few hours. The palate is fleshy and has lovely sweet (almost candied) red fruit flavors with a hint of herbs and sapiness. The acidity and tannins are complimentary and the finish is drying and persistent. This wine is clearly in the window, open for business but on the upswing. Try a bottle if you have a few. I think another couple of years will be rewarded with more complexity and integration. Glad this is coming out of its shell.
