  • 1997 Argyle Extended Tirage Brut

Our friend Barry found this in his cellar and said he was going to surprise us with some "interesting sparklers." Even with 10 years on the lees, this had to have been released at least 15 years ago, so who knew what to expect. This followed an '13 Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee and '10(?) Chartogne-Taillet Les Barres and I was pleasantly surprised that it held its own. Stylistically, this could not have been more different than the Vilmart, but the age and meunier profile of the Barres served as a nice segway to this elder statesman. Like the Barres, this showed a lot of brioche, biscuit and leesy notes befitting its age and upbringing. But while the Barres leans toward savory/herbal and strawberry notes, this was all about pear and apple. Quite a bit sweeter than the other wines, the higher RS was noticeable but not cloying.

  • 2013 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Coeur de Cuvée

I'm a pretty big Vilmart fanboy but had never had the opportunity to taste their Coeur de Cuvee until now, thanks to the generosity of my friend Mike, who shared his only bottle with us. Laser focused, with a prominent streak of lemon and minerals at its core. Bone dry but not austere, with a spritely mousse and long citrusy finish. One could fault this a bit for being one dimensional but what a dimension it is.

  • 1995 Château Lynch-Bages

Tasted as part of a mini-vertical with the '75, '85 and '00. This particular bottle was from a recent auction purchase to supplement my dwindling original modest stock purchased at release. I think this may have been one of the last "classically-styled" LB for at least a decade and a half, and the contrast with the very modern '00 was striking. Not surprisingly, considering the vintage, this is still quite structured, and is just beginning to enter secondary development. The cassis and blackberry fruit is a bit subdued, with tobacco and cedar notes adding complexity. A more elegant, understated style of LB, and very enjoyable now but likely to improve with another 5-10 years.
