  • 1982 Château Brane-Cantenac

I was absolutely charmed with this bottle. The nose was a little muddy, with deep, cooler fruit, pencil shavings, and book binding. On the palate, this leads with graphite, and has muted forest berries. There's also leather and library on the palate. This has nice structure. It's at an ideal place for me with resolved tannin, tons of tertiary development, but it hasn't degraded much yet. Maybe the fruit is starting to go. This lacks the juicier aspect of the '83. It's a little more 'classic,' as they say, and it accordingly lacks the polish of the latter vintage, but it is still very enjoyable!

(I'm not commenting on clarity because my server manhandled the bottle; gave it a good shake while trying to rip and twist the capsule off as you would with a young bottle of whatever. The guy decanted the whole bottle, sediment and all, into a decanter after I’d had it upright for two days, and asked him not to. f that guy.)

This had rich red fruit on the nose with a bit of volatility giving way to and finishing with flowers. The wine maintained a deep red color in contrast to a bottle of '58 I opened recently, which had faded a lot. It was striking how fresh the tannin was out of the gate, going straight to my cheeks. " It softened up pretty quickly as the wine went through a quick evolution. Medium intensity dark cherry resting above a baseline of mild, faded tar. Good acid. The fruit faded giving way to beautiful, potent mushroom notes. The wine was fading fast after an hour.

A much better experience from a much better bottle. Here, the high alcohol was checked by remaining sweet fruit, tar, and acid, and the heat was not a problem. Also, the alcohol was not nearly as volatile as the last bottle, but it did show some nail polish remover, so it did not escape the flaw entirely. That said, this was still a delicious deep, fruity wine showing off cherry, orange and tar along with some roasted strawberry. It dips its toe into the jammy range of flavors but not the texture. The acid kept that in shape. Something mesquite is taking shape in the background. Not a typical wine for the House of Whitcraft.

6/29/2020 7:47:00 AM - I represented Whitcraft in Vermont pretty much from the beginning. Chris became a good friend who traveled to VT often to promote his wines back then. I do have a few bottles left. Like everything in my cellar, they were bought on release, directly from the producer, and stored in perfect conditions. They are not for sale but if you are ever in Vermont, stop by and drink one with me.
