Groth and California cabs are my go to wines so I might be biased, but this was very nice. Showed medium body with light tannins. Moderate fruit and just hints of leather and tobacco. Enough to say, this is a great $40ish Cali cab and it came together with age. Not sure it will get much better.

Decanted for about an hour, served with peppercorn NY strip steak with sauce. In short, a really nice wine! Nose- black cherries, pencil lead, a little eucalyptus; taste- black cherries, blackberries, dark fruits, graphite, hint of eucalyptus, maybe a little oak and vanilla; dry and a short finish. Drinking pretty well now.

surprised by this bottle. i have found previous bottles to be overly tannic and lacking fruit. this one seemed to be much more revealing with ample red fruits, herbal and mint notes. softer on the palate and quite enjoyable. perhaps these just needed some time...

Moderate nose of red jam and vanilla. Initial flavor of raspberry, cherry and some dark fruit with a jammy sweetness. On the mid-palate there is a little more oak and spice, with good soft finish. Decanted for about an hour and the tannins were quite soft and well balanced. Bordering on the sweet side, but great Cab overall.

Hound Ears Wine Extravaganza (Ron and Sandi's Place at Houndears): Had alongside the 07 Reserve. This had lots of oak on the nose. A little tart on the aftertaste. But overall very similar flavors (currants, dark berries). This did not have the length of finish and was definitely not as smooth as the reserve. But for half the price, a great value.

Much anticipation with a good, but not great follow through. This wine was consumed over two days. Best showing was the first day, the second day the wine held up but was even more tlat than the night before.
Initial impression was good. Rich fruit with an unmistakeable grit. Finish was quite truncated and drove the overall missed expectation.

Showing really well right now. Popped and poured and was great from the first sip. Totally fruit driven (not surprising for an Oakville) and a little hedonistic verging on being too sweet for my liking. But it pushed the envelope just enough to be very enjoyable for me. Bright red and blue fruit profile. Tannins were sweet and relatively soft for its age. Good wine overall...drink or hold.

2007 Groth appearance to the eye, the color compelling deep rich, beautiful dark red ruby color oak, tart, sour cherry. However, I must say (1 year later) this cabernet lakes the complexity and concentration that I thought it have gained with time. 2008 is by far a better vintage for my tast. I score this wine a liberal 86 points.

Totally different wine before and after big exposure to air. Initially (even after an hour of breathing) was bright-red tart fruit rather than the more brooding dark fruit I am used to from Oakville. Had a nose of black licorice and pepper and oak. BIG alcohol, a bit too much in my opinion; though a very delicious Cab, for sure. Hours later - and particularly the next day - the fruit really turned dark (more blackberry than cherry) and almost pruned. Alcohol balanced out a lot better the second day, but I actually enjoyed the wine more initially. I'd let this breathe about an hour, no more, and then enjoy it as it evolves and changes. Good stuff, though I wouldn't spend $40+ on it again.

An Oakville cab that was opened at the 2012 Wine Tasting. This was the second Oakville offering, and followed a Miner Family 2005 Cab. Compared to the Miner, this one never stood a chance. The best thing about Groth is in its traditional nature. This is classic Oakville Napa Cab, and well done. The cork popped with about 3-4mm of cork bleed. Allowed to sit without decanting for about 3 hours. The wine was instantly giving blackberry and blueberry fruit. Oaked up Oakville nose very present. On the palate was raisin, blackberry, fig, some smoke, oak barrel moving to the mid-palate and finish where the spice started to take off, followed by a toasty tannin that was a bit firm and in your face . If people didn't get that oak barrel finish with the Miner (it didn't have much), they certainly got it here. Finished firm, but wasn't a lengthy finish. All in all, elegant, but still brambly and oaked. This is actually what I like in a cab. This offering was good, but a bit boring - not many layers here. Drink now or within the next 5 years.

Decanted for an hour before having with grilled burgers. Aroma of black licorice, smoke and blackberry. Taste has plum, along with hints of chocolate and tobacco. There is a bit of thinness to this on the mid-palate that keeps it from a higher score. Finish still has some pretty heavy tannins even after nearly 3 hours.

DISCLAIMER: After removing the foil of the bottle I noted that the top of the cork was stained red. As I removed the cork I went on to note that the cork, itself, was stained pretty far up from the base, exposed directly to the wine. I'm not sure if this constitutes a 'corked' bottle, but it was worth noting.
Going on.... The wine was bland for an Oakville/Napa Cabernet. It certainly wasn't undrinkable, but there were minimal tanins and it was far from a strongly enjoyable bottle. California Cabs tend to have a strong personality, and the quality of what I got here is worthy of being sold by the glass.
I have a second bottle that I hope will be different....let's, for the time being, chalk this up to a bad cork.

Lush, dark fruit nose. Full bodied but lean, structured, and tight knit. Blackberries, currants, cherries, and plum flavors abound. Has harmonious balance, showing off Napa's 2007 vintage's complexity.

A common theme is appearing in these notes, which is exactly what we experienced. This wine opened up very tight, tannic, and dry. After an hour or so the tannins softened considerably, but it still was a very dry Cabernet, with not nearly as much fruit as the nose. We opened a Grgich Hills after the Groth and the Grgich was easily the WON. I'd say 3 - 4 pts better than the Groth. This Groth seemed much less impressive than the same vintage I had at Christmas.

A young tart on opening - pun intended! A bit awkward on opening but softens over an hour to a smooth velvety red and black berry fruit with tones of mocha and hint of spice and vanilla on a moderate tannin finish.

Medium light red wine. Aromas of cassis , dark cherry, rose petals anise, and leather. Moderates tannins on a full bodied wine with flavors of cherry and blackberry. Was encountered in a blind tasting of cabs and came in 6th of 13. I expected a better showing based on reputation and price.

Just another one of those over priced napa cabs...dark ruby in color..Nose: Dark fruit along with over the top oak which turned me off..Palate: Dark fruit, oak, currant and a hint of dark chocalate. A very ordinary napa cab without much complexity..Pass on this one imo..Cheers!!

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Bright ruby color. Black fruit on the nose. Tastes of blackberry, currant, mocha, and lingonberry. Strong vanilla oak backbone. Firm chewy tannins that seem to dominate the astringent finish at this point in the wines evolution. Just another well made but uninteresting Napa Cabernet.

Had a only two-ounce taste at lunch (and took no notes) as I was to be traveling all afternoon. The bouquet was amazing -- complex and assertive and approachable -- I savored it for the first half of lunch before I took a sip. The palate seemed a little closed (but only compared to the aroma), which I presume is where the improvement will come over a few years of aging. But a day later, I can still smell this wine in my head, and it is GOOD! I realized that although I have been buying 07 Cabs, this is actually my first taste of a good one. I hope they are all like this -- it will be a spectacular year.

Popped and pured, which I don't rec. for cabs, anyway, it was excellent. I have had consistently favorable experiences withthe 06 Groths and this was no exception. Sometimes you just take an initial sip of a wine and go, "wow", this is why I like wine. Totally enjoyable. I will finish the rest of the bottle tonight.

Just compared this to '06 Mondavi Oakville. The Oakville was superior - more structure, body and concentration - a more serious wine. Still, the Groth was quite pleasant and drinking well young.

I tried this wine a year and a half ago and wasn't a big fan. It's come along way and is drinking beautifully right now. Still fairly tight and needs air but it a classic Napa Cab when it opens up.

Very woodsy and aggressive on the nose, juniper and cedar. Developed in the glass over an hour with nice supple yet firm body. Drinking nicely now.

Acidic and a bit tannic. Not much primary fruit for an '07 Napa cab. Pretty good with food, but I was a little disappointed.

Restaurant pour ... Big, rich with noticeable vanilla edge. Very smooth and juicy, with fruit at forefront. Almost purple and has a Zin quality to it; Wouldn't have pegged it as a pure Cab.
