Doing pretty well though probably at and on downslope from peak. This showed a more oaked, primary expression than a lot classic Cabs from that era. The oak was clearly evident and a large partof the expression of the wine. That's not nearly the terrible thing many would lead us to believe it is these days. But it's also disappointing when the wine doesn't match it's volume or merely use that oak as seasoning. This is in that category. A nice experience but more nouveaux than classic.

Fill into neck with perfect cork. Allowed to breathe in glass 2 hours before tasting. Clear deep dark garnet color. Off-putting savory and volatile aromas of meat juice, black olives and shoe polish led me to suspect improper storage. Bouquet remained disappointing throughout the first evening. However, after overnight storage in the refrigerator under vacuum stopper, the bouquet improved markedly on the second day, now showing blackberry pie, black cherry compote, anise, dark baking spices, camphor, forest floor. Similar on the palate, full body, balanced, seamless. Remained enjoyable on the third and fourth evenings. Rating withheld due to questionable storage. Well stored bottles should have many good years remaining.

The wine had tons of dried fruits to it. Reminded me of dried plum, dried cherries, very much so dark fruit with heavily perfumed aroma of tobacco, stewed black fruits, and hint of vanilla. The acidity was still great and the overall integration of oak was well done. The wine is in a great mature drinking window and should last for a few more years no problem considering the current acid level. Don't count of this getting better so i suggest you find a good excuse to pop the cork if you have a bottle of this. Those that love a rich over the top flavors of a relatively young cali cab may find this wine underwhelming but people that enjoy a more restrained balanced style will find this to be delightful

Fairly strong nose of something like menthol on top of classic aged Cab. Not as integrated as a 1997 Inhad a few years back. Seemed to still need more time. However, this seemed fine and strong although with a bit of a disjointed nose.

Cherry liqueur up front with red sweet fruits and wet leaves, clay aspect. Very soft slight tannic structure. Simpler, lighter than the '97, but still quite solid. 90-91.

Excellent wine and in a really good place now. First bottle cork was perfect. Enjoyed with petite basque cheese and was a stellar combination. Alcohol is low, tannins are integrated, balance is excellent and finish is very good. Second bottle the cork broke off but was otherwise same as the first. Had with king salmon, I thought it was a stretch but because of its age it worked well.

This wine was unbelievable. Still has legs after 16 years. Can easily go another 5 years, maybe 10. But 5 for sure. Absolutely delightful and delicious. The flavor and impact was equivalent to a strong Cab a quarter of its age. Strong tannins and still a lot of fruit.

Deep surprisingly youthful ruby. Raspberry , cassis, and savory notes along with distinct Rutherford dust. The nose is quite nice. On the palate, rich and supple, with good structure, milk more than baking chocolate, more cassis, some fine herbal notes, and stony fruits. this is actually showing pretty well right now. There is some green herbal savory stuff on the back end that I feel adds complexity , but for me it would be better if a touch less overt. The nose is better than the whole picture. At peak and showing no signs of fading. Quite long. 91 pts

Very pleasant surprise. I bought this bottle on release when I first got into wine. It was a "birth year" wine for one of my kids and I was hopeful it would age well. After reading - and tasting - a number of "over the hill" wines lately I thought I should open this to see at what stage of development it was at and I'm glad I did. Fill was mid neck and cork was pristine. Wonderful balance of fuit/tannin. Taste of sour cherries and mocha. My wife loved it (rated a 94 which is very high for her). For me (I rated as 92), the only blemish was the finish as it just didn't have that lasting zing you expect in a top notch cab. This bottle was peaking with a few more good years left but can't imagine it would be as good in 2017 when my son turns 21.

An absolutely great bottle of wine that paired perfectly with Beef Tournados Chantrelle and Wild Elk at that wonderful restaurant in South San Jose, La Foret. The nose was classic Cab with bright fruit, chocolate and a little bit of leather. The tannins were very smooth and restrained. The acid was just a bit strong on the finish when sampling without food, but was excellently balanced on the whole. The level of acid was just about perfect with the slightly sweet brandy sauce that covered the tender, flavorful steak. The wine had nuances of smoke, leather, chocolate, and tobacco as it opened, but the fruit never lost center stage. A great experience. The son, who is often stingy with his ratings graded it a 93.

The wine has held up well. Slightly lighter in body and the color was pretty good although a tinge of brown on the rim. A flavor of Rutherford dust along with light berry flavors and oak. Real easy drink - soft and apprachable right away.

Of three bottles open (1986 Haut Brion, 1994 Silverado Reserve), this is surprisingly the best of the bunch. Perfect balance, great fruit, no flaws. Still just a touch tannic on the finish. Great bottle of wine. 92 points early on. Update: after some time open, the Haut Brion moves into the lead. In the meantime, this one loses a bit on the finish, becoming a bit clipped. Great nose, but tight and short on the palate. Better early on than 4 hours later.

Opened & decanted prior to dinner, and consumed over a couple of hours. Started out with a wonderfully complex bouquet of plums, blackberry, anise, sage and tarragon, with violet & cedar undertones. The palate was not as exciting though. Flavors of plum and blackberry, with a bit of spice. A touch thin on the midpalate and finish. While it didn't fall apart over the course of the evening, it became weaker as dinner progressed.

I would call this bottle at peak in my opinion. I dont think it is going to get any better. Decanted for 2 hours. It seems to be in great balance, though it took some time to open. Seamless creme de casis, layered with leather and tar. Notes of anise. There is defiitely a funk on the nose for the first couple hours. Sort of an aged funk. The '95 Cinq Cepages we had along with it seemed to be aging better than this.

This was one of the first bottles I’ve ever “lost” inside the cellar, which is a great sign that my cellar is growing! There was SO much sediment in this bottle of wine, that little crystals were abundant. Definitely be on the lookout and decant carefully. The wine was showing it’s peak performance - tannins that had softened, and a young leathery feel on the palate. Utterly delightful wine, with a bit of mocha/coffee flavor. Yummy.

Wonderful bottle age on this wine - smooth, well integrated tannins. Did not have as much fruit as I had expected, making it a little disappointing, but still has what it takes. The lack of fruit makes me wonder if perhaps this is beginning to fade? Perhaps just my bottle, but will drink up soon.

Purchased at the Anvil Club's inventory reduction sale and opened with dinner. Deep garnet color, barely turning clear toward the rim. Notes of dried herbs, leather and sandalwood. Opened in the decanter over the course of dinner, and the last glasses were the best. Very well balanced, with nice depth to the red fruit tones. Raspberry liqueur, leather, herbs and dried red fruit nuances, with slightly chalky tannins on the finish.

Decanted for 3 hours. Very clean but a bit thin at first. Over the next hour it continued to develop accompanied by food. Currant and pomegranate began to present, then cream with a beautiful tannin balance. I couldn't sip it slow enough. Beautiful wine.

Had this along side a 1998 FAY. Nose was lively with oak and plenty of fruit left. Tasted heavily oaked with eucalyptus standing out against the fruit and tannins. Didn't see any bricking and have to think this still has quite a few years left. Good wine.

Dark purple with no signs of aging. Nice nose of currant, cassis and earth, but restrained, not expansive. This wine shines on the palate. Gobs of sweet fruit, cherry, plum, cassis, blueberry, all integrated with a hint of tannin. Very CA in spirit. Long, long finish with no flaws. Wish I had more.

I was not expecting much given prior reviews but I really thought this was a nice mature wine. Wine was still quite red, clear with no rim bricking. Nose of earth, maybe a hint of oak, anise and berries. Tannins were fine and well integrated with full mouthfeel. earth and blueberry.

Although my wife and brother liked it, it was definitely not a good bottle. This was like the '85 Georges de Latour that I had years ago that was like drinking concentrated prune juice. I can't imagine this being the intended taste of the vintage.

Not a blockbuster but very well balanced. Subtle texture and fruit. This is right in its' sweet spot now and I really don't see room for much improvement. This has always been one of my favorite modern vintages of this wine. Too bad this winery is falling back in the pack of cab producers.

james laube Challenge re 1996 Napa Cabs @ DUO, Miami (DUO, S Miami Avenue, Miami, FL): Flight 4, #3. Unfortunately this had to go up against the Opus, and the legendary 74 Heitz Martha's Vineyard. It was quite good, but not memorable, and this too should be consumed soon. Tony still has one,(or a few?) bottle(s) left of the equally Legendary 74, Andre Tschelitschef's last Latour at BV. Craig, you and Tony missed a great opportunity to pit those two against each other. I had purchased a case of the 74's 30+ years ago, from 67th St Wine & Spirits, NYC @approx $9/bottle. I finally consumed my last one about 10 years ago. Too me modern Georges Latour's can be quite variable, they are usually still quite good, but for a Senior citizen. like myself, they no longer have the mystique from the 60's and 70's.

BV Georges de Latour Vertical (Zoe): Very similar stylistically to the '94. Perhaps a bit more cedary which may be the extra 2 years in the bottle (cedar vs. dill?). Still, you can tell these two wines are related with big, round black fruit and dark chocolate notes. Silky and of medium weight in the mouth with a longish finish. Very nice.

opulent, and fruity, with large cedar and oak notes, but balanced with the fruit and fading tannins. this was an excellent example of a Rutherford Cabernet. Third best out of 6 bottles of GDL tasted in vertical. Better than 01, 00, and 98, not as good as the 97 and 99.

Yummy.

Very solid wine. Opened an hour before and tried an immediate sip - wait the hour. Warmed up a bit and just got better. Ate with garlic glazed Filet Mignon. Real treat all around. Left bottle until the next day. Just as good and frankly, better back palate.

Good wine.

good dark red color with just a hint of brick at edges; plenty of darker fruit with just a hint of raisin and tobacco; a bit low in acid, but otherwise reasonably balanced; mature and ready

Quite a well aged cab, moderate sediment, popped and poured. Flush, velvetty (spelling?), very moderate cab fruit (and not in a bad way). Got rather simple after an hour or so. Mature, drink them up!

For my tastes, this is probably close to peak. Well balanced on both nose and palate. Elegant rendition with plenty of fruit. Tannins / backbone still there, but not a lot of reason to wait on this one.

Incredible. Dinner with the 97 BV GLT as well. Ron/Jan/Ruth Napa/Sonoma trip. Softer than the 97 but extremely well balanced. Just short of peaking in my niave opinion.Drink before 2010.

james laube Challenge re 1996 Napa Cabs @ DUO, Miami (DUO, S Miami Avenue, Miami, FL): Flight 4, #3.

On the nose currants with a floral element of roses and burnt sugar. On the nose earthen flavors of chocolate covered truffles, with a splash of dirt make this a very interesting wine. Long supple finish. This wine was many peoples favorite.

Mature and drinking solidly right now. Fully integrate tannins, dark red with no bricking. Base cabernet flavors a little muted, read mature, and I would drink up.
