  • Decanted an hour before dinner. Similar as the bottle 30 months ago but a tad better with leather, forest floor, dark fruits and a suggestion of gamey flavours, on the palate smooth tannins, medium+ acidity, good concentration and a long, slightly rustic finish.

Classic old school Bordeaux, in a good place now, will hold for another 6 to 10 years but will most probably not improve anymore, a short decant of 30 to 60 minutes is recommended.

  • Still needs a good 1.5-2 hrs decant, but getting much better. Very earthy nose. The palate is not as expressive, but elegant and very smooth. Happy with it, considering what I paid. Will have it for my b-day little schnitzel party tomorrow

  • This was nice enough tonight but not particularly noteworthy. This needed several hours to open, with fairly simple fruit and ok depth. Not much in the concentration and nuance department. I would have enjoyed it more at 1/2 or 1/3 the price.

  • First bottle of 12 bought at release. Decanted an hour before dinner. Perfect cork. On the nose leather, forest floor, a hint of gamey flavours and dark fruited. On the palate smooth tannins, medium to high acidity, good concentration and long finish. According to the vintage, classical, more on the rustic side but still with some elegance, best with food, 91+. Superb price to quality relation, drink now or within the next 12 years.

  • 3h decant.

11th bottle since 2016 and probably the best one so far. Shouldn't have gone through my bottles so fast I guess. Opposite to the two previous bottles the cork did not break.

The general tasting note is of course similar to my previous ones but I think it had a bit more depth and more prominent tertiary characteristics, such as tobacco, which were smoothly integrated. Very long finish. Brilliant drinking stage right now!

  • Bottle number 10 since 2016.

Cork broke once again. Very similar notes to the previous bottles (cherries, oak, smooth tannins, coffee, long finish). IMO the tertiary notes have become a bit more dominant over the years; this time there was tobacco as well.

  • Second Sunday Group: 1999 Napa cabernets (Our house): Really nice mix of fruit and earth. Balanced. Tannins are softening nicely; not yet at peak.

  • Proeverij: Euryanthe - Bourgogne wit Grand Cru 2008 19/09/2018 (notitie MC)
Zicht: intens, matig doorzichtig, kers. Intens aroma. Neus: complex, intens.

Aroma's: kreupelhout, donkerrood, garrigue, geroosterd, zuiver, modern, eik.

Smaak: krachtige attaque, vrij rond, redelijke spanning, mooie expansie, mooie balans, goede lengte. Cassis.

  • With a developed nose of truffle, forest greenery, cedar wood and tobacco, the wine is medium bodied and fresh. The attack is better than the finish, which leaves with you a blend of herbs, and spicy, red fruits.

  • (From a half bottle) Classic Pessac nose. Same on the palate. Just enough sweet fruit to make things interesting and a hint of that Pessac creaminess. Very smooth in the mouth but with a bit of grip on the medium-length finish. I'm not really getting much in the way of development; I'd say that this is just on the cusp. Drinking beautifully right now but with some time ahead of it.

  • Great nose, reaching early maturity for a bordeaux of some class. Fresh cassis, herbs, some leather. With a few hours of air it developed further and became more integrated and dominated by sweet fruit.
On the palate medium bodied, fresh and elegant rather than powerful, with cassis, some plum, hints of Tobacco and leather. Medium tannin, by now nicely integrated.
In my opinion, this is a fine example of the vintage. It is an elegant wine, made with good precision and with balanced fruit. I don't think this is over extracted, but in a perfect place to drink now.

  • Good but not great. Like most of the 2008's that I have had, the fruit is too muted. I don't think time will help this wine.

  • Bottle number nine within the last two years. Very constant Bordeaux, even though the cork of this and the bottle last christmas broke and crumbled. Other than that, no ageing noticeable.

  • This is pretty, but somewhat characterless. Could be a mid-level supertuscan. After 2 hr decant, but only 2 days after delivery. Perhaps it is still shook up and the next bottle will be better. Anyway, I have had better bordeaux in this price-range.

  • Christmas family dinner 2017:

    1. Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Reserve (89p) - 2 bottles
92 points Parker sticker on both bottles. 40% Pinot Noir - 40% Petit Meunier - 20% Chardonnay. My favourite NV Champagne in the 20€ price range. Yeasty, nuts, brioche and lemon notes. Outstanding given the 20€ I paid for each bottle.

    2. Molitor Rüdesheimer Schlossberg Spätlese Trocken 2015 (91p) - 3 bottles
WOTN for most of us. Young, but ready to drink: On the palate stonefruit, peach, slate with well integrated RS and acidity. Juicy, savoury, and dry at the same time.

    3. Jean Stodden Spätburgunder Alexander 2016 (85p) - 1 bottle
This typical German Pinot Noir is quite different from its French or US relatives, which I usually prefer. Light transparent red, almost orange (Aperol!) colour, herbal nose. Herbs on palate with licorice, cherries and wood. Tough job to compete with other wines this evening.

    4. Scheiblhofer Big John 2015 (89p) - 1 Magnum
3h decant. This was a christmas gift, which we spontaneously decided to add to the wine menu on christmas eve. Cuvée made from Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot noir, which spent 12 months in oak barriques. Very young but already at the beginning of its drinking window (to ~2025). Dark violet colour, dark berries and wood on nose. You can taste that this is a cuvée, whereas Zweigelt (60%) is quite dominant with dark chocolate, strong tannins and red berries. Easy to drink.

    5. Chateau Fieuzal 2008 (90p) - 3 bottles
3h decant. Had this Bordeaux also at our last family dinner and my notes are still the same:
Kirsch and coffee nose. Very accessible with kirsch, leather, and coffee notes; round tannins and long finish. Perfect drinking window right now.

  • Once again 90p for Fieuzal! In a great state right now, dont' forget to decant.

  • Due to the great experience last christmas, I managed to buy another six bottles of this fine Bordeaux. Lucky me!

Similar notes as last December; lots of backbone, dense cherry and leather notes, lovely finish. 10 years left at least, probably more.

  • Agréablement surpris, simple mais bien fait, déjà accessible avec du temps en carafe, un bel exemple d'un bon vin à juste prix, ne gagnera surement pas davantage, à boire.

  • Christmas Family Dinner 2016:

    1. NV Jacquart Brut Mosaique 88p
Very nice apero, good balanced Champagne with apples, toast, and chalk.

    2. NV Geldermann Carte Blanche 86p
German Sekt, produced with methode champenoise from Chenin Blanc grapes; spent 2 years in the bottle before release. A bit sweeter than the Jacquart we had before. Floral notes, similar mousseux.

    3. 2011 Petaluma Riesling Hanlin Hill 92p (magnum)
Last of three magnums we got from Brooke and Bec for our wedding. Similar notes as last christmas: lots of petrol, citrus fruits, long finish. Wish I had more!

    4. 2015 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Eltviller Riesling Baroness Andrea 89p (2 bottles)
Same note as 2 months ago: "Medium to dark yellow colour. Exotic nose. Great balanced acidity with some sour lemon, peach, herbs, little RS. Typical mineralic Rheingau notes, creamy finish."

    5. 2013 Weingut R & A Pfaffl Excellent 91p+
Decanted for 3 hours. Dark, almost black colour. Made from 60% Zweigelt, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. I fully agree with the notes on the Pfaffl homepage: "Dark purple; dark fruit with tender smokey tones in the nose, plum jam; elegant and power ful with a fulminant pressure on the palate. Good structured, an idea of chocolate and elegant tannines. Fruity and a creamy-tender character, wonderful lenght. Ideally for a good piece of grilled meat."
Very, very young with lots of potential. I never had a wine before that had such intense dark chocolate flavours. Very long finish.

    6. 2008 Chateau de Fieuzal 90p (3 bottles)
Decanted for 3 hours. Bought 6 bottles in November for 120€. Kirsch and coffee nose. Very accessible with kirsch, leather, and coffee notes; round tannins and long finish. Perfect drinking window right now.

  • Nice, solid Bordeaux. Does not seem to have the wow factor, though. Fairly priced, I'll get another bottle and sit on it. Good length, dark fruits, leather, good acid and tannin. Maybe 10 more years in it.

  • Nice wine, though not memorable. Medium body with some earthy, peppery, spicy notes. Nose turned a little medicinal. Nice finish that lingers a bit. Well done for the vintage.

  • Still not very complex, a bit green. Have to wait longer.

  • Paid $36.99. My third bottle, 1st one perfect (94) (18-24 months ago), second one very closed (90). This bottle was still closed, however after an hour was slowly opening. Medium body. Great steak wine.

  • Good Graves wine. Well balanced. I decanted for an hour. Peppery, coffee, spicey, earth, and oak.

  • Beautiful red fruit, tobacco, fine tannins, and nice acid. This has stunning balance. It showed beautifully in a tasting with 6 other red bordeaux wines and has a great future ahead. 92+

  • Outstanding from a modest vintage. Peppers, coffee, dark chocolat, spices, earthiness. The bottle evolved beautifully over 3 hours. Has quite some life ahead but right now is a very fine drinking window for Pessac in this vintage.

  • Green notes, meaty with cassis, dark fruits and some fresh red fruits and scents of coffee beans and licorice. Rather full bodied. After one day half filled bottle open, the slightly green, slightly upfront tannines were fully integrated. So I will wait for a year for the next bottle. This will hold many years anyway: very well structured, classic.

  • Lovely smoky aroma with a bit of funk. Meaty with cassis, dark fruits and some fresh red fruits at the back, a little mineral as well as some smoked charcuterie scents. A bit more than medium bodied on the palate. Open today with a lush fruit but with plenty of structure to last for a decade or more.

  • 2008 is reeds perfect drinkbaar. Vooral rood fruit overheerst. Geen sec geuren/ smaken genre ceder, tabak, koffie, leder maar perfect genietbaar. Lijkt me typische pessac

  • Cedar and pine notes in the nose, nice touch of spice and dried nutmeg; good medium plus body with earthy tannins and blackberry notes; great structure and nice acidity in the finish. This is very classic and is drinking fine now, but could also use 3-5 years.

  • dark ruby, nice reflections. Has green notes, stemmy, some bitterness, loads of fruit and scents of coffee beans and licorice. On day one it was rather bitter and earthy, with great structure, good length, graphite and liver coming on towards the end. On day two bitterness and earthiness were downtoned quite a bit. Wine is more enjoyable still. Obviously too young but I very much liked drinking this, the first of my Bordeaux 2008 'en primeur' that I open. This wine has a promising future. For immediate consumption I would say it's an 87-88 (carafe, carafe, carafe) but I'll mark it 89 'cause it's really worth having and cellaring.

  • 30 min decant. Very pure cassis/ballpoint inky fruit on the nose. The barriques contribute with cedar, sandalwood, coffee, chocolate mints and fudge. Good density of fruit on the palate, impressive polished tannins, and a quite intense and long finish of dry chocolate mints. Somewhat less interesting after 4-5 hours, less structured. This is what good bordeaux is like nowadays - more of a confected luxury item than a true and honest terroir wine.

  • Ripe black fruits, coffee bean, sweet tanins, hint of kirsch, refreshing acidity, slightly lactic, great balance, best on the second day, a joy to drink.

  • Union des Grand Crus 2008 Bordeaux Tasting - NYC (Metropolitan Pavilion, NYC): nice red berry fruit flavors. very forward (my notes say "like a hooker")

  • Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2008 Tasting (The Barker Hangar – Santa Monica, CA): Attractive and fruity on the nose with aromas of fresh berries, stones, savory herbs, and licorice. Structured and dense on the palate with dark fruits such as currant and complexities of herbs and stones. Although quite primary I like the tension in this wine from the firm structure.

  • 08 Château de Fieuzel, made with the help of Hubert de Bouard of Angelus fame, is a better wine than those in previous vintages. Earth, blackberry and smoke aromas make up the perfume. This elegant wine finishes with a solid dose of soft, black fruits. 90-92 Pts

  • Bordeaux 2008 (Bordeaux): Dark cassis jam, and rich, yet also balanced with lifting notes of green tobacco. Some excessive extraction noted on the tannic finish but this packs flavor. 89-92
