OK...I'm trying hard to find a flaw in this....or trying to figure out a way it could be better. it's so good after 20 mins of air...I can't believe it. strawberries, blueberries, boysenberries, kiwi, cinnamon, layers of seawater...all perfectly integrated. light and changing...just awesome.

This pinot has held up well. While not KB best vintage, a very solid wine with notes of ripe cherry, floral tones, overall well balanced with nice finish.

Quite similar to my note from five years ago (June 2012). I will say the wine has not moved much, it seems to have plenty of life left. But, while tasty, really just comes across as much too candied for my palate these days.

Good wine, good fruit, but just way too sweet, heavy and candied IMHO. Out of balance, not enough acidity. Still has life left, but doubt it will improve.

Pinot Palooza (Casa Covolo): The group's #10 and my #10. Tasted double blind against 10 other pinots, 6 were under $30 and 5 were over $60. Oak on the nose, with some vegetal notes and spicy character. This did improve some as it was open, but hard to get past the heavy oak on the nose.

Pop and pour. Aromas of dried cherry, sarsaparilla, brown sugar, Asian spices and clove. Took a few minutes for this to come together but flavors of cherry cola, brown sugar, dried strawberry, clove and touch of earth. The cherry infused finish goes on for 30+ seconds. I liked this better in it's youth but this is still tasting young and has a lot of years still ahead of it.

Light magenta in color. Almost translucent. 14.9% ABV. Soaring nose of red fruits, cherry cola and baking spices. Medium to full body with plenty of acidity. Plush and decadent. The wine has a sense of grip on the palate with deep, concentrated fruit. Flavors of black cherry liqueur, strawberry, mushrooms and cola. The finish is long and silky with subtle tannins. Has aged beautifully. Drink over the next 1-2 years.

An absolutely marvelous pinot noir. Very hedonistic balance of sweet and savory and finishes with a tease of spice. Amazing depth of flavor, but I would not describe this wine as "overripe", "rich", or "big". Just very harmonious. I've been buying Kosta Browne since the 2002 vintage, and I think the 2007 is their best vintage so far. But I think it's a mistake to open KB's too young, because they definitely benefit with time in the bottle. The 2007 Kanzler today was the best it's ever been and will rival the 2007 Koplen as my favorite bottling ever. It's just starting to enter their peak drinking window, so I would drink this up over the next 3-4 years. No need to decant, but please honor it with proper burgundian stemware.

The 2007 KB Kanzler is delicious and has benefited from bottle age. The components are starting to integrate, beginning with with rich, wild berries, dried fruits, and finishing with an exotic spice character, including anise and perhaps some dark mexican chocolate. With some air, it also develops some lovely mushroom notes. This has gotten progressively better with time, and I do believe this will be a very long lived bottling for Kosta Browne. For the 2007 vintage, I still prefer the Koplen Vineyard at this stage, but that is more my own personal stylistic preference.

Had this bottle alongside a Kutch. Both were 2007 Kanzler Vineyard Pinots. So same year, same vineyard, but different wineries. Both were very good. We took them to a local French-style bistro that is BYOB. Drank about half of both bottles at the restaurant. The KB was much more fruit-forward, with some sweeter fruits. More smooth, and more weight. The Kutch was more austere, tarter fruit, and more acidity. We finished both bottles the following evening. The KB had smoothed out some more, but lost some fruit, but honestly, the extra time helped. Same with the Kutch, it really smoothed out and lost the tartness. Actually enjoyed the Kutch more the second night. Both are still drinking well and probably have some time left, but I wouldn't wait too much longer. However, a little decant will still help both of these. Nice wines. The Kutch paired better with the mac & cheese. The KB paired better with the mushroom tart and the steak.

Beautifully integrated, with red fruit, excellent acidity and a pure, elegant texture. There was a bit of chalky, grit that enhanced the experience. No baby fat, not OTT in any way, just a remarkably balanced and delicious Pinot.

Oh my goodness. This wine delivered. I'm very familiar with Michael's wines and they are time after time astounding. Character, nuance, so much terroir. This wine needed a good hour and a half to open up. At first there was a wall of gorgeous fruit and smoke. It took this time for the terroir to show and the different layers of aromatics to develop. Light plush strawberries and bing cherries, pink peppercorns, touches of smoked bacon fat and rose petals. A gorgeous feminine wine that is rich with flavor and intrigue. These single vineyards from KB are absolutely stellar and this is still showing like a baby. Yes, a some age is showing and it lends an red stewed tomato note that is unreal. Love this wine. Buy what you can and hold if you are able. Absolutely one of the best Sonoma Pinot Noir I've ever tasted.

Really nice. Making me second guess my dropping off the mailing list (as I head toward retirement - $75 bottles are going to be the rarity). Still big fruit, no tannins to speak of, complex but not subtle. Love this style, just can't justify it on a budget.

Wonderfull rich mouthfeel featuring pure red strawberry raspberry fruit balanced with complex earthy flavors. As the wine envelops you mouth and stimulates your senses it moves from red fruit to black fruit and ends with notes of of earth, mushrooms, and nutty butter.

Near perfect now. Signs of age in the glass, but just maturity on the nose and palatte. Opaque, dark garnet color, wide rim. Raspberries, currants and forest on the noise. Balanced body in the mouth with complex fruits and a nice long finish. Decanted nearly 2 hours before drinking with Thanksgiving meal. A great wine that didn't compete with all the other flavors on the table and kept getting better.

Poured off a glass and let it breath for 30-60 minutes. This wine was awesome! Classic KB in the same vein as the 2004s which I was hoping for. Awesome nose of dark berries, black cherry and mineral leading to a liqueur intense mouth with a great mid-palate. A great wine for sure and I can't wait to enjoy my next bottle.

Argh ... what is it with the crazy overripe fruit @ KB? I know that many folks like this style, but for my palate, $70+ for this wine is about $55 too many.
Pw/5 hour decant. Clear, med purple color. Shockingly thin nose. Although KB is my favorite CA Pinot and usually sets the standard, this bottle was disappointing. The usual powerful nose/taste was not their. The wine was flat and lacked the usual big/bold fruit profile. Seemed more Cab'ish, especially the finish which was long in tannin and short of freshness. Not the raspberry, cola, dark cherry that KB is known for. Maybe in a dumb phase but more likely just an off bottle, #7000/9000. Not really bad just not up to par. $84 w/tax, shipping. Followed with their 09 Sonoma (WS Wine of the year) which was excellent.

Filthy -- in a good way. Needs air homies. Don't expect Burgundy, just embrace some Cali. Nose actually exploded after an hour. Lush, slutty KB -- Is that rhetorical?. Enjoyable, but not my style anymore. My girl loves it so I am getting ass nonetheless.

vertical tasting of '07's: kosta browne kanzler, kistler kistler, brewer Clifton mt. carmel. kosta and kistler were neck and neck, w/ the kosta displaying a little more sweet/ripe fruit and less nuances than the more structured and complex kistler - a style difference, and not surprising. the brewer was less concentrated, less vibrant, and had somewhat of a bitter aftertaste.

This was perhaps the most mellow KB I have had. I have had 6 other bottles of the 2007 (RRV, Koplen and Sonoma) over the years and this was very muted yet refined. I was getting nothing on the nose so I splash decanted and this brought out some of the red fruit and mushroom notes. On the palate smooth but missing that raciness one usually finds with KB wines. For my palate I think I will continue to drink the KBs young as that is what excites me about their wines.

Popped and poured 30 min later. Served in Riedel Vinum Burgundy stems. @ 65 F . Medium intensity garnet color, pronounced nose and palate of baked black cherry, cola, vanilla oak . Medium body... Palate was dry with medium plus acidity and low to medium tannins, with a pronounced intensity of fruit. very new world fruit forward fuller bodied style pinot.

Opened not decanted. Brought to Wood Tavern, Oakland, for lunch for my wife's birthday. Although it showed well right out of the bottle, it would show better with an hour decant. Paired with a sausage stuffed quail. Very light, bright red cherry notes, which was surprising to me, as my memory was that this was a heavier wine. Light to medium weight, in body; heat was in check; and ended with a red and black cherry finish. Very Good.

Opened the bottle an hour or two prior to drinking. Classic KB all the way as I’ve been really impressed with the ‘07s so far. Classic KB perfumed red fruit at first that turned to darker berries with hints of savory spice and graphite. Great mid-palate as usual with a nice finish.

Wow. What a start to my night. This was a very distinct wine from the nose to the palate. There is striking minerality and cola elements everywhere. I did get blood orange on the nose (usually laugh at critics' descripters but on this I agree) The cherry notes blend well IMHO and makes for a fresh, nervy wine. Gets the tastebuds going.

Decanted for ten minutes, had with stir fry, but mostly for dessert ; ) The nose is there, but nothing big. Some fruit and whispering oak. The weight is also just medium, perhaps even on the lighter side, akin to Oregon Pinots. Super long finish though. And very, very, smooth. Integrated and balanced with complexity. The palate is a mesh of 80/20 cherry strawberry. Mild and flagging tannins. I don't see any reason to hold this despite the generous window on this site, the fruit is just going to decline. The heat, 14.9%, does begin to poke through in the latter half of the bottle.

Splashed decanted about 15 minutes before taking it to the restaurant. Decanted there for another 1/2 hour before beginning to drink. Fragrant floral nose of cherries; light in body with focused black cherry. Ends with a semi dry finish. Heat was a little noticeable and there were some syrupy notes, which meant that it really needed food for me. Paired well with a pan roasted chicken at Wood Tavern, Oakland. Good to Very Good.

Decanted three hours before drinking. Pretty nose of red fruit screaming pinot noir. Immediately, the mouthfeel is lush with strawberry and raspberry followed by the emergence of perfect structure, then the flavors of cola, leather, and an interesting lavender note echo persistently through the finish. I wish I had another bottle to try in another year or two because this wine is just entering adulthood. What a pleasure.

My dislike/like relationship with KB continues. Kanzler is usually my favorite KB, but this time this one just did not speak to me. Too monolothic, a bit too strong in alcohol, cola and dark fruit. Had some good flavors, just too much, perhaps some time will allow some other flavors to emerge.

--- COLOR: Deep, translucent garnet with ruby rim NOTE: Compared to 2007 Keefer. The nose here is more fruit and mineral-driven, with nice raspberry liqueur, dried strawberry, white pepper and hot pebbles. Mouth is supple with hints of opulence and coats the tongue with beautiful red berry fruit juice, slightly sweet, some tobacco and leather in there. Then the red fruit-filled finish glides on for about 15 seconds before the tannins emerge and tell you this baby still has some time. Very typical for a KB Pinot. I love how these things age. It may not provide much more pleasure in the future, but a few more years isn't going to hurt it either.

Holy Cow this is drinking beautifully right now. Tried out in my new centellino (they call it an aerator but it really is more like a single glass decanter). Initially had that KB cherry cola going then settled down to ripe cherries and soft mouth feel. Yum! wish I had more.

I have drank a lot of the different Kosta pinots, and this bottle on this particular night was hands down the best that I have had. Just a little bit of spice, ripe dark fruits with maybe a hint of prune (yes, prune - no laxative effect thank goodness), cola, and just a hint of oak. All integrated to smooth perfection -- what balance! The finish was ridiculously long. Not sure what the experts are saying, but I can't imagine this bottle will get any better or how much longer it will stay in this sweet spot? Bottoms up!

I love Kosta Browne and have quite a few bottles, and for some reason this one was just fine. Normally they just knock me over. A bit astringent and bitter. Perhaps decanting would have helped, but I haven't really had to decant my KB's before. I will admit I could be off on this, but I wasn't wowed as per usual.

--- COLOR: Plum-ruby with med-ruby rim NOTE: Nose is sweet raspberry reduction sauce, pomagranate liqueur, slight seaweed/weedy note, little mesquite dust. Mouth is nice and rich, with sweet tannins exploding into red berry fruit, concentrated watermelon and a hint of cinnamon. The finish is just a little prickly with heat, but oh so concentrated in more raspberry/pomagranate liqueur flavors, a hint of orange oil, nice offsetting acidity (because this is a sweet momma!). Borders on the edge of being too big, but then pulls back at the last moment. It's quite a tease. I'd drink it now.

Ruby tinted. Fruity, pencil lead, granite nose. Medium bodied, light tannins, good heat (14.9% alcohol). Black fruit. Pretty typical high quality sonoma Pinot noir, more like a light syrah than an Oregon or burgundian Pinot.

(3/5) Much better than the previous bottle. Another year, and perhaps the help of a Vinturi, really improved this wine. Nice cherry elements on the nose. On the palate much more balanced than the previous bottle, with the pure fruit flavors showing well. Still a bit of heat on the finish but overall very enjoyable. Probably could still use another year.

Tasted in the same short lineup as the Garys' and 4 Barrel. Shows cola, dark raspberry, some light mineral and pretty good balance but what lacked for me was the complexity. In contrast to the 07 Garys, this Kanzler didn't offer a lot of nuance and was more one dimensional.

Pop and pour and drank out of plastic cups on a sailboat. Not sure how well the "wine glasses" were washed but this was still singing, despite the cool ocean breeze and less than ideal stemware. Wondeful creamy cherrry and raspberries with good structure and balance. The acidity keeps all the fruit in check to present a wine that you just want to drink some more. This was paired with some frozen and thawed lasagna cooked in a Force 10 oven on a baot tied at the morring. Yeah, despite all those conditions, it was still a 93 point wine.

The 2007 KBs have generally been excellent, and the Kanzlers are often at or near the top of KBs. The 2007 KB Kanzler is very good, but suprisingly not a top performer among the 2007 KBs. The nose was spicey and mild red fruit. The taste was spice box, red fruit (closest to pomegranate), and cola (albeit less pronounced cola then often in KBs). Slight alcohol heat on the finish, which helps it with food.

07 KBs in The OC: Having this following the Koplen exacerbated the candied quality. At first sniff I only smelled bubble gum. I went back to my food before returning to this wine. As with many of these wines, this is a bit of a berry fest. Very juicy and sweet. The Kanzler stays relatively light on the mouthfeel considering the concentration. Doesn't seems as extracted as previous vintages. This will be fun to follow. Pure pleasure right now but I am curious what will develop when the fruit settles down. I would guess it will it 4-5 years before that starts to happen.

OC KB and Shane Dinner--With Michael Browne and Shane Finley (The Murray Casa): So if the Koplen is seductive, this is even moreso. It's stuffed and packed. Pure, long , big flash and dense. Richness, probably the most rich of all the 2007s. This wine in the flight followed the Koplen and I still prefer the Koplen. Why? I think the Koplen shows more complex edges, a broader expression of the fruit but look, don't take this as a knock on the Kanzler here, as I think the Kanzler probably will win more acclaim, more high marks because it will flash fry your pants off, it's so flashy and seductive. Take this bottle out if you really want to show someone what CA pinot can do on all cylinders (and for anyone looking for heat or to knock this as too ripe, forget it....that won't fly here). Delicious.

An evening with Michael Browne and Jim Mack (La Madia, Chicago IL): nose: very deep and pure with real nice rich and cool fruited tones of red fruits, black cherries, spice, tart raspberry tones, some cola and bits of mint and herbs. Even as pure as it is right now, it feels a bit holding back at this young time
taste: great and expressive feel with rich and deep tones of red fruits, herbs, black cherries, spices, raspberry tones and hints of cola that meld together with ton of polish on the feel
overall: The aromas and feel on this already have a lot of class to them. very rich, but there is a youthful holding back right now that should shed with a couple of years, at which point this has the potential to be an utter stunning wine

Some might say I'm crazy, but this wine reminds me of only two other Kanzlers: the Alesia 2004 and the Kutch 2007. It still has the darker profile that Kanzler always does, but this is a terrific rendition from the vineyard. Blackberry, plum, and black cherry fruit. More noticeable oak and a richer earth component. Terrific acidity. Long finish, where the vanilla pokes through. My favorite KB Kanzler ever. A-

Very Good.

COLOR: Deep, translucent garnet with ruby rim
NOTE: Compared to 2007 Keefer.

All integrated to smooth perfection -- what balance! The finish was ridiculously long. The finish is just a little prickly with heat, but oh so concentrated in more raspberry/pomagranate liqueur flavors, a hint of orange oil, nice offsetting acidity (because this is a sweet momma!).

The nose was spicey and mild red fruit. The taste was spice box, red fruit (closest to pomegranate), and cola (albeit less pronounced cola then often in KBs). Slight alcohol heat on the finish, which helps it with food.

Wines on the Woodley Park Rooftop (Washington, D.C.): aromas are so complex and inviting. cherry cola, root beer barrel, boysenberries... just goes on and on. big, obviously, but what i love about this wine is the silky mouthfeel. so velvety. rich fruit flavors, black cherries, cola, highlighted with some spice and pepper. long, lingering finish.

This was delicious. Smooth and balanced with pleasant fuit flavors adn a velvety mouthfeel. Classic California Pinot, in the best possible sense.
This light and easy to drink as soon the cork was popped. Best pinot I've had in a while.

nice mouth feel, pleasant finish with no hint of anything bad, overall a good bottle of panty remover, lacking the depth one would wish fore but overall a pleasant easy to like wine

(2/5) Drank at Dad’s. This wine started off at a “1” but improved quite a bit with air. Still, I found it disappointing...more heat and oak than the KB pinot flavors I love. This wine needs time and air.

Pulled this wine out of the cellar for a birthday gift to myself. Well worth it. Deep raspberry, boysenberry, and cherry flavors. Rich, classy sex appeal all over this wine. Feels nice on the palate, with fruit hitting everywhere. Has some spice with a good balanced acidity and a finish that keeps going and going and going.

Great purity of fruit. Aromas of mineral, cola, spice and light fruits. The flavors of boysenberry, candy, raspberry and cherry are rich and concentrated while in great balance. Wait a couple years to try this one again.

Nice. This is a young wine that is showing well even now. Enjoyable, albeit pricey.

Delicious.

Spicy, deep blue and black fruit at the core. 15% whole cluster. Jammy, big and a tight finish. Young at this point and deserving of some time and air.

Dinner with Jim Mack & Michael Browne (La Madia, Chicago): A packed nose--some green strawberries, ripe red cherries, tinge of black licorice, all kinds of red berries, and great sipce / herb mixture (almost reminds me of a good BBQ sauce or rub). Palate is rich, dark, fresh, and ripe--just packed with great fruits plus interesting spices & acid to remind you it's not at all unbalanced--very well made & polished. Great length on the finish. Incredible wine with room to grow.

3rd Annual Freeman Caves Weekend; 2/6/2009-2/8/2009 (Santa Rosa and environs): Tasted at the winery. Interesting to compare the differences between the two tastings within 24 hours. Very different. Wines were decanted over 1 hour and tasted over 2.
Lots of blackfruit, but not as jammy or sweet as the Amber; high acid and a dry finish. Excellent.
