What a great surprise. This is drinking wonderfully right now. PNP, opened and enjoyed over 3 hours. Dark cherry, cola, chocolate. Great nose, medium to full bodied, long finish, well integrated and balanced. My palate has shifted to prefer more old world wines these days, but Cali syrahs like this with a little age are really nice. Glad I have one more bottle. Suspect this will be good for up to 5 more years. Don't think it will get any better though.

Rating this slightly higher than usual given its surprisingly positive development 12 years on. The wine was great - fresh, vibrant, dark as can be exhibiting typical Randy Lewis characteristics of liberal oak. But the tannins were still present and the wine had an interesting complexity to it showing some integration among the various elements. I'd go so far as to say this bottle would be even better in 5yrs, though I still doubt it would make it to 10 more yrs. If you like this style of wine, I can think of few producers who are as consistent as Lewis.

This wine was still very youthful and fun to drink. I'm not sure much changed these past 10 years, but good bright fruit in good balance...not excessive or hot. Solid dark fruit, fruit forward new world wine and fun to drink

Still a big boy, have some more. Drink over a few days. Showed great on day 2. Big Big wine. Glycerin and fruit. Dark Dark character. but nice. Excellent with grilled ribeyes (which we had it with) Full on Cali!! Typical Lewis. I used to drink this all the time, but it's not what I prefer these days. Though it has it's place in my cellar for sure!

Decided to give this another go after just 6 months....This is a decent enough wine now but it has certainly lost its wow factor that it had early on for those who liked the style. Its no longer huge, has lost all noticeable tannin, and the fruit while still dark, dense and forward is mellowing yet not really transforming into secondary nuances yet. Initially some oak did bother me, but after a 1/2 glass it seemed to form in, might just have been my palate adjusting though? Decent now, better before, who knows what to come....2 bottles left 1 for a couple of years and 1 for maybe 10 yrs as an experiment.

Seemed a bit out of balance compared to the last bottle I had some months ago. This one seemed to lose a bit more fruit and be slightly advanced on the late palate. This let the oak show a bit on the nose, which I did not get last time. The last bottle was a nicely aged wine, while this one would have been better consumed 3 years ago...I have a few more so I guess the consensus is still out for my palate. Still a decent wine on an off night.

Very bold and textured, but virtually non tannins. I was expecting red fruit, and got graphite, earth and back fruit. A great wine that seems to be in it's prime right now.

Not decanted. Dense, heady nose - black, tar-tinged fruit, a light smokiness. Deep purple. Blind, I would've thought it was younger. Where complexity and uniqueness falls a little short on this one, the depth of fruit brings it back to a very good wine. Some tannic bite, but I don't see this getting better though you don't need to hurry.

Oak does not seem too bad. This seemed a bit hard edged which is odd for a Lewis wine and perhaps just a bad pairing with the food which had some tomato sauce on the pasta. It may have been better the prior nice with just the chops.

Despite some of my historical dislike the Lewis oak oak richness, I have always had fondness for this particular bottling so it was nice to see it show up for dinner last night with Karen. I was curious about whether the "milkshake" or richness quality that these wines are sometimes accused of was perceptible, indeed still here, but there is some emregence of some curranty and earthy qualities at this stage, too. The richness shows in the mouthfeel, the generous and gushing blackberry and the milk chocolate texture with the mocha and vanilla of the wood. The fruit and wood is hard to miss but the juxtapostion of the earthy blueberry, the currant feel emerges on the finish, along with a bit of acidity to wash away some of the chocolate. My curiousity lies on where this wine goes in another 2 years: do the earthier quaities of this wine become more in command? Does the oak ever settle in?

Tons of vanilla and well integrated blackberry. Maybe over the top for some, but this was right up my alley. Paired well with a rib eye, but also might pass for a meal in itself. Wish I had more!!

No score as I think this may be an off bottle, but first tasting in over a year. Nose is great, pure fruit coming through. The fruit seems a bit clipped though and I get a bit of tartness at the end. Oak has really integrated, where it used to be too much for my palate. Still tannic. Not the lush, rich wine I remember?

I hadn't tasted this controversial wine, so I took one from the cellar into one of Monterrey's best restaurants. Very dark ruby, this wine has lost its baby fat. The nose offers copious black fruit. It is a bit uni dimensional, but very nice for what it is: a ripe California Syrah. There is a bit of heat in the finish, but it is not as obtrusive as to ruin the wine experience. I fall in between TWA & WS on this one.

Wonderful deep purple color, on the nose is alcohol, sweet vanilla, & oak. I cannot get over the heat of the alcohol both on the nose and also the initial attack of the wine. On the finish the alcohol is overwhelming. I'll let it sit in the glass and revisit it later. Day 3.......the alcohol has subsided & there is no sign of oxidation. this is a huge wine!

Decanted for only 1/2 hour; however, it was singing quite well. There was no doubt this was a syrah...I have read other notes that indicate the wine is generic or unremarkable??? I could not disagree more. The color was dark as ink and it had the typical sweet nose of a good syrah. It was well balanced with an expansive mid palate. The finish was sweet without being too sweet and it lingered for 45 seconds. While I don't think it will improve with age I do think you can enjoy this over the next couple of years.

Bought from the restaurant list for $70, this wine probably spent 90 minutes to two hours in a decanter before tasting.
This was definitely a huge wine. This is a bit overoaked for my taste right now, but still a great wine. Vanilla and espresso wrapped around a beautiful core of black cherries and other black fruits, this is still a baby, though very approachable. The flavors are very nicely structured, and should integrate with more time in the bottle. The tannins are present, but smooth and even silky, with a very long finish.
This is very hedonistic to drink now. If you have a few, go ahead and open one when you have some time to linger over it. But it should be better with a few years under its belt, when the oak softens and the fruit integrates a little more. This was the group wine of the night, and my number three wine.

Dark purple in color, the nose consists of black cherry, vanilla, and buttercream. The lush body adds blackberry and dark chocolate to the flavors present in the nose. The tannins are supple and unobtrusive. This WS Top 100 (#12) syrah blend is very enjoyable and execptionally drinkable. I am unsure if this will improve with additional cellaring. Bravo on a wonderful wine.

Is this wine good, yes. Will it be a long cellar candidate no! It has both the fruit and structure to make it a very good wine, but I don't see how this wine will improve much with cellaring. The flavors are both rose petal and lilac but dominated by a black cherry note, the tannins are well integrated and silky. The high alcohol is not noticeable which indicates a well structured wine. Top 100 wines in the world for 2004 by WS. If you have it you are lucky if you don't you can find other wines that are as good for less money with hard work!
