  • Outstanding Bordeaux blend! Did not appear to be impacted by the forest fires as others have indicated.

  • So if anyone is uncertain about the slight tinge of what is "Smoke Taint" find this wine and you will see a prime example. It is still a delicious wine just has that presence of smoke which is an interesting background to the brightness of the fruit. Some ripened strawberry, some fully ripened cherry fruit and then a presence of oak and smoke.

  • Splash decanted half the bottle. 30 mins later there are herbacious notes on the nose along with red fruit. While red fruit dominates the soft approach across the palate, a smokey bite extends across the finish and makes the tannins' presence known; certainly won't question that this saw 85% new oak.

However Pahlmeyers website indicates that due to the fires they didn't produce any of their primary wine, instead dedicating what estate fruit they harvested solely to the Jayson label; I didn't know that before getting the smokey bite I've noted. While not sure of the ratios of Mtn v Floor fruit as this doesn't have the character I expect from Mtn, I'm certainly content with the <$50 Last Bottle price.

Unsure if / how this will develop over time, I'll try another bottle in late 24.
