Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 5 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Al-Vino on 2/28/2024 & rated 93 points: Outstanding Bordeaux blend! Did not appear to be impacted by the forest fires as others have indicated. (290 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 12/24/2023 & rated 89 points: So if anyone is uncertain about the slight tinge of what is "Smoke Taint" find this wine and you will see a prime example. It is still a delicious wine just has that presence of smoke which is an interesting background to the brightness of the fruit. Some ripened strawberry, some fully ripened cherry fruit and then a presence of oak and smoke. (428 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 12/1/2023 & rated 90 points: Splash decanted half the bottle. 30 mins later there are herbacious notes on the nose along with red fruit. While red fruit dominates the soft approach across the palate, a smokey bite extends across the finish and makes the tannins' presence known; certainly won't question that this saw 85% new oak.

However Pahlmeyers website indicates that due to the fires they didn't produce any of their primary wine, instead dedicating what estate fruit they harvested solely to the Jayson label; I didn't know that before getting the smokey bite I've noted. While not sure of the ratios of Mtn v Floor fruit as this doesn't have the character I expect from Mtn, I'm certainly content with the <$50 Last Bottle price.

Unsure if / how this will develop over time, I'll try another bottle in late 24. (437 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
