At Boston Wine & Poker, Needham, July 17, 2022: (Tasted blind) Very luscious golden color -- seems older than it is, perhaps because the acidity is low. Some bitterness. I thought it was a much older, oaky, high-quality Napa chardonnay, but was not surprised to find that it was a younger Rhone-style white. Definitely an attention-grabbing wine.

This slightly cloudy wine with a nose of honey and citrus was chilled and decanted for 45 minutes. Those same flavours were in the glass mixed with a touch of butter but tonight something about the balance of this wine was not as good as I expected. It wasn't bad, just not as smooth as many other SQN wines that I have had.

This was chilled and poured at a local restaurant. The wine was deep gold in colour with quite a strong nose of honey and some citrus. In the glass was a very smooth wine that showed obvious Chardonnay influences. Quite buttery flavours mixes with honey and some lemon hints. This had a medium to long finish.

N: TOAST with notes of lemons & other unparsables, but NOT unattractive
P: MF body; RNDISh entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish OAK/"frt" met by a bit of astringency which PRETTY much ult loses THAT aspect (other than a remaining bit which is possibly even a +) as it transitions into a LONG finish. A *very* interesting wine which, at least for my palate, MIGHT have been better a yr or so ago. 15.4% ABV; My EXC-/EXC. 97 pts WA, 95 Jeff Leve, & 92 Vinous (Galloni).

Yellow color with a bouquet and flavor dominated by nutty and toast notes. Quite intense. Still somewhat angular and unintegrated, but what a powerhouse. Wish I had waited longer to drink this bottle, as it may have become more balanced.

A lovely blend that may be heavily Oaked but there is so much about this wine it’s integrated and supports. Maybe another year or two will help though not necessary. It glides down then explodes on the palate and inside your head and goes on. Well worth trying but it’s bold and big. Great stuff.

First visit to Cafe Matisse (Friends House + Cafe Matisse): I continue to like this wine, but I'm not sure that it's not in a bit of a closed down moment right now (which certainly happens to the Rhone version of these varietals). The acidity is not there at all. Instead very much a full mouthful. Less of the white flowers and fruits and instead it's more caramel and vanilla. Interesting. We've been waiting on ours and I think this might need a few more years.

bottle was half coravinned and i dont have a time frame for how long but what i did drink was exceptional and not particularly oaky as others have said. the acid on this wine was terrific and lovely fruit def some tangelo.
having had many SQN whites (and quite preferring them to their reds) i look forward to trying a well-cellared full bottle of this soon.
Notes of tangerine, honeysuckle, citrus and some toasty oak on the nose. Large-scaled and integrated in the mouth with notes on the nose carrying through on the palate. Realy nice! Could use more time for those sensitive to oak. Delicious!

Yellow color with a very toasty and floral bouquet and flavor. Balance a bit off because of some angular oak notes. Definition good and finish fairly long. Not as good as most of the SQN whites that I have had, but still a very nice wine.

Solid, balanced wine. Big, but not as over the top as I expected. The Rhone varietals balance out well. But you do have to be ready for a step up as with any SQN. A-

Once again, Manfred and Elaine have shown that they have a special ability with white wines. Being a "red wine guy" I still love their reds the most, but their whites are un-freakin'-believable and this is no exception. Dense, yellow fruits, with lanolin, clove, good acid, and a loooooong finish. I opened this one too soon (they typically start to come into their own around year 7 post-vintage) but it was phenomenal.

Some nice qualities to it -- lots of extract, complex, body. But to me, this falls into the same category 99% of California whites do -- too much oak. The first taste is very interesting, and then the wood just dominates. Maybe it will be great in 10 years. Definitely not worth the price at this point.

PnP alongside an SQN Stock Syrah. These SQN whites have such a beautiful color to them, rich and vibrant golden yellow. Nice nose. Palate was good not great. Citrus, tropical fruits, maybe some grass. I would say this is a step below the amazing In The Abstract which is a year older.

Already fun to drink, deep yellow in color, with a nose of white peach, flowers, honeysuckle, spice, lemon peel and candied grapefruit, with a touch of vanilla bean to round things out, the wine is rich, lush and concentrated, but not over the top. Lively, sweet, unctuous citrus fruits create the finish. The wine was made from a blend of 45% Roussanne, 26% Chardonnay, 14% Petite Manseng, 10% Viognier and 5% Marsanne and was aged in a combination of 46% new, French oak barrels, concrete egg shaped vats and used French oak barrels for 19 months before bottling.

This is an interesting, multi-dimensional wine. On the one hand, it's unabashedly Californian — compact and upfront in fruit. On the other, the wine continues to evolve in the glass and on the palate. And even though it's 45% Roussanne, the Chardonnay (26%) is very dominant on the midpalate. Notes of lychee, white peaches, pineapple, and nutty oak turns to pear, tangerines, and crushed rocks. Powerful and glycerinous on the attack but mineral-inflected and bitter (in a good way) on the finish.

This is one of the richer and more interesting SQN whites I've had. The nose smells of the rhone varieties in the blend - lychee, white peaches, asian pears, pineapple and some subtle floral notes (jasmine? gardenia?). Beautiful. On the palate it was a different story, as the chardonnay dominates and adds richness, nuttiness, oiliness, citrus, and finishes with a nice minerality. I have a feeling there's more chardonnay in this blend than usual. How a taster feels about this wine depends on how open-minded one is regarding the rules of blending and winemaking. Depending on your perspective, it is either incredibly complex and unique, or it is weird frankenstein wine.

A wave of unadulterated flavor and substance, the meridians are all revealing. Baked Gravenstein Apples, river rock, mango skin, chow mien and marble. Luscious and decadent, the balance makes this unabashedly approachable. Quite enjoyable now: one cannot wait to indulge and has no regrets. However, she can age as well. Drink now - 2031.

Food (Network, Da Umberto) & Wine (Chelsea Market, Da Umberto): Fun to try the new release of this. Most of the ones we've had have had ~10 years of age give or take and those are just spectacular. We tried one with five years and really enjoyed. New release is also excellent although I think I like these with a bit more age on them. It has all of the components to be a very interesting wine, but it doesn't have that never ending evolution that you see after it's had a bit more time to grow into itself. It was however just an amazing pairing with shrimp in garlic sauce. Glad we have a few of these.

A bit confusing, but obviously needs more time. Still loved it. Lots of tropical fruit, but very high acidity, really lemony notes. In spite of this it has a thickness and body to it that is impressive. I have drunk a lot of the older "white wines" and they always get more and more impressive with age, even up to 15-20 years old.

This rarely happens…..but drinking the remainder of a second bottle of this, 2 days later! First bottle was a PnP….this second bottle, after 2 days, has a better integration, seems richer…more butterscotch, butter rum spice…bigger spice kick….no fume of alc….fresh citrus, yet reminds me more of a sqn white with at least 7yrs on it. A better drink than day one. SO….age these things for 7+yrs…or open and wait a couple days for max pleasure!

SQN White Birthday Weekend tasting in Vegas (Private Residence - Las Vegas, NV): I want to be clear before you read my tasting note here - this is a fabulous wine and one that will turn out beautiful with much more aging to it. I first enjoyed the Resiste 1/20/16 at a fantastic tasting menu dinner at Schwa (1 Michelin star BYOB in Chicago) paired with a course of frog leg's/tobiko broth/toasted rice pandan/reduced cherries and the wine paired brilliantly with such a crazy course - the heat matched the dish. Then on 1/29/16, among all these gorgeous older SQN wines, she did not fare so well. After almost a 2 hour decant, Resiste greeted us with a ripe golden yellow color. Hints of lemongrass, smokey nuts, citrus, and tangerine on the nose. The texture was almost creamy and heavy on the oak and nut flavors. The heat was present throughout the course of the evening fading only near the end. I am struck by the imbalance of this wine, but perhaps this was just bottle variation or the awkwardness of it;s youth. Resiste (the label is a picture of an agave plant) is a Spanish word which means "to resist" or "fight against" - which is what all owners of this wine should do - resist drinking Resiste too soon! The varietals are 45% Roussane, 26% Chardonnay, 14% Petite Manseng, 10% Viognier, & 5% Marsanne. Hold Resiste until 2020-2025.

Unbelievable right out of the bottle. Rich golden yellow in color. Notes of honeysuckle, citrus, a touch of tangerine and flowers. Great balance and beautiful texture in the mouth, creamy and fills out nicely without any heaviness. A finish that lasts a long time. This drinks way too easy, so ready to be consumed. Absolutely delicious!
The last glass showed a bit more oak than my original glass. Probably could use some time in the bottle, but was great at pop and pour.

This bottle was opened at a local restaurant and drank without decanting. For such a young wine, this was very approachable and enjoyable. It was slightly cloudy and mid level yellow in colour. The wine has quite a bit of citrus on the nose and this came through when tasting. I noticed some orange but predominantely lemons with a surprising hint of spices that gave it a bit of heat. This may have been my favourite SQN white that has come out in recent years.

Had with the Wallis's. My first SQN and what an experience it was!! In the decanter, the color is a golden brown. A deep color. Looks more like a 50 year old Riesling. The mouthfeel is thick and coats the entire mouth and sticks to the glass. Super viscous. Has a deep, grapefruit, pear, apple flavor. Paired with snow crab claws dipped in butter. Fantastic!!

Opened blind by Allred. 45% Roussanne, 26% Chardonnay, 14% Petite Manseng, 10% Viognier and 5% Marsanne. Quite a change of pace after the Champagne and Rieslings that we drank. Big, pwerful, oaky. A little bit of alcohol on the nose. 15,4% alcohol. Notes of quince, butterscotch, chamomile, smoked white fruit and vanilla. Thought the 2012 In the Abstract was much more balanced and approachable than this wine. I also liked the 2004 Rejuvenators, 2010 Monkey and 2011 In the Moment better when I previously had them. Hold off on drinking the Resiste for a while. 89+ points.

45% Roussanne, 26% Chardonnay, 14% Petite Manseng, 10% Viognier and 5% Marsanne……rich and lifted right out of the gate….creamy and oily buttered fruits(tropical, pitted) but also very bright and tingly with citrus acidity of lemon, grapefruit, pineapple fruit…that P Manseng is key here! Seems a little tamer than most of the whites right out of the gate……more on the subtle side…a really nice balance here. Fantastic flavors and florals…..peach tea, exotic white honey, dried pineapple ring, subtle pepper and hot buttered rum spice kick…white flowers and honeysuckle. Minerality is there as well…crushed rocks…good salinity to the ripe fruit…slight flint strike. Reminds me a little of the Petition with more freshness. Another super TASTY SQN white here…….LUV them!

Notes of quince, lemongrass, spice and lanolin. Rich texture with flavors of butterscotch, white fruit and spice. The fruit is not as forward and bright as the '12 Abstract was at this same stage, and this shows quite a bit of the alcohol despite being open for an hour+ and served at cellar temperature. At this stage I preferred the Abstract...the Résisté will need some time to round into form.

Friday Tasting Group: "Killer Bar" (#03 for me): "New World" Theme (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Supposedly 45% Roussanne, 26% Chard, 14% Petite Manseng, 10% Viognier, & 5% Marsanne, coming from the Eleven Confessions (40%), Cumulus (29%), & Bien Nacido (31%) Vyds. Supposedly aged 19 mos in new FR oak (46%) with the remainder in used barrels & concrete eggs;
97 pts WA, 95 Jeff Leve, & 92 Vinous (Galloni).

very big wine
I gave it 4 hours in decanter and that smoothed it out
You get a range of aromas that seem a bit on heavy side - some caramel from oak and roast nut and some tropical fruit. It leans more toward chardonnay flavor than roussanne but it is way too complex to call it one thing anyway. The balance is amazing - no heat - long finish.

This was drank at a local restaurant without decanting. The wine was clear and very deep gold in colour with a nose of lemons, apricots and some caramel. In the glass was a very full flavoured wine with oranges, peaches and caramel. The wine had long lugs and a very lengthy finish. This was outstanding tonight.

Some nice qualities to it -- lots of extract, complex, body. But to me, this falls into the same category 99% of California whites do -- too much oak. The first taste is very interesting, and then the wood just dominates. Maybe it will be great in 10 years. Definitely not worth the price at this point.

The mouthfeel is thick and coats the entire mouth and sticks to the glass. Super viscous. Has a deep, grapefruit, pear, apple flavor. Paired with snow crab claws dipped in butter. Fantastic!!
