Deep ruby. Pronounced aromas of blackcurrant, green pepper, vanilla, cedar, cloves, chocolate, coffee, cooked meat, tar. licquorice. High acidity with smooth integrated tannins. Long finish. This is outstanding and potential to improve with more time in bottle.

Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London): Blackcurrant cordial, slightly savoury spice, just showing a little leather tertiary note. The palate is super energetic - fresh, lightweight dark hued fruit and structured but talc textured tannins go hand in hand with a little tertiary note and travel very long. lovely

Clear dark ruby core fading smoothly to a pale ruby rim. The smell developed with time in glass, starting at smoky red fruit, through cedar and mild tobacco, ending up at leather and sweet cherry. The taste similarly took some time to open, reflecting the smell (but retaining the cedar note) by the end. Mostly resolved tannin, good balance, medium plus finish, fully ready to drink.

Welcome back NZ, Cynthia! (Forrest Hill, Auckland): m+ depth dark red. good concentration, dark plum, massive sweet herbals, oak, tobacco and spices. some cocoa and mineral notes in long finish. it's rich and bold, a little rustic on chalky tannins and herbal bitterness flavours, more strength but less harmony, seems extract too much in an average vintage.
however, it's still a robust Pauillac, has lots of potentials ahead (5-7 years). WE 91, JL 90, JCL 90, WS 89, BD 16.5

54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot
Deep dark, almost pitch-black. Rather short and narrow rim. Opaque but youthful.
Aromas of smoke-infused black fruits, charcoaled woods, some cooking spices.
On the palate, moderately tannic. Quite granular still, not entirely resolved. Medium acidity, dry. Quite fresh but fruits are there but rather green. Midpalate is decent, though relatively lean. Finish on a cedary/oaky notes.
This is not a successful d'Armailhac. While I've found a lot of successes with 2012 throughout Bordeaux, the only appellation that seems to elude me is Pauillac. Especially north of the appellation. Sadly at its asking price, this is a pass. 87-88.

Decanted for about 2 hours. Classic dark fruits with oak/cedar on the nose. Medium tannins, lovely fruit on the tongue with a mild aftertaste. A very pleasant Bordeaux, drinking nicely now, but may still keep a little longer in the cellar. For a GCC wine I would expect a bit more complexity and layers hence a score in the low 90s. However, life is good when you can enjoy a wine like this on a Saturday evening with a nice meal

Decant 1 hr to show unripe stone fruits, earthy root, wet tobacco on nose. Soft and smooth, light tannins are completely integrated. Red berries, tobacco, cinnamon bark on palate. Pauillac notes throughout finish, funky savory and earthy notes.

we enjoyed this tonight with a roast chicken dish. for details I second jeff leve's articulate description. For me it has some substance, roundedness, no bitterness, and a bit of depth. It is not as delicious as a really excellent wine (slightly on the dark dull side, no new world brightness), but this is good and worth the $50 price to me and I will buy more. In particular better than either the thin 2014 la Pointe, or the more enjoyable 2014 Clos Oratoire, and is the only one of those three I will certainly buy more of. To be sure my choices are heavily influenced by the dearth of choices available to me in my market, which is why I make specific comparisons. If I could find 2014 cantemerle I would prefer it at about $34, to any of these except perhaps the armailhac. I agree it will very likely be smoother and hence better in a year or so.
pretty boring on day 2.
8-22-2019: Had another bottle tonight, which was pretty dark and brooding, somewhat bitter as opposed to fruity. I think they call that bitter taste "tar", at least it reminds of the smell of tar. Unfortunately with this bottle the tar dominates the fruit. Again decanted for an hour or so, perhaps not enough. Not really enjoying it tonight, probably partly because we had a high end pricey wine last night with so much more stuffing and bright flavors.
Well the small glass left over the second day was more enjoyable this time, so now I have the opposite opinion from the previous bottle, and might open one day and drink the next day, or maybe taste the first day and then decide.
edit: november 2019: a little hard edged the first day but smoother and more enjoyable the second and third day.
well i bought another one but must admit it i not as enjoyable as the slightly more expensive haut bages liberal 2015 or the stags leap artemis 2015.

One of my rituals, a Rothschild derivative, my first night in Macau.
First few sips and I was thinking it was more full bodied than expected and I was really enjoying the tannins which are absolutely there but wrapped in a creamy cigar leaf.
I'm thinking 2012 is generally quite under rated in Bordeaux. I don't claim to be an expert on this exact topic but I certainly do recall thinking the 2012 Mouton was incredibly elegant (and giving it around 96). This is less delicate (that's for sure - this isn't delicate) but it's bigger and certainly more tannic (though welcoming tannin not the angry type).
Having fun and enjoying a text book example of what I tend to think this should be.

A nice mid weight Bordeaux that is accessible now. Nice Pauillac typicity on the nose. Strong barnyard upon opening but this fades. Back and red fruit on the palate. Plenty of acidity and freshness here. Drinking well now and I’m guessing will continue to improve. I really enjoyed this.

This is all in all, a true Pauillac! It takes me back to the reason why I started loving Bordeaux. It has a nose of oak, and crunchy new fruit, but the palate is screaming with fermented tobacco, earth, and lush red fruit. So delicious and such a great value, this is a wine that puts a smile on my face regardless of its youth, and its 2012 stamping. A lovely, savory and pungent Bordeaux. Very drinkable now. Drink or hold

(at Tocqueville - NYC) A nice, plump Pauillac that had all the classic cassis and cedar elements nicely in a place. There was a roundness to the wine that was a bit surprising given its youth. This is delicious and drinking very well this evening. A very nice restaurant choice. (91)

Out of a split in The Rosevelt in Shanghai. Nose is amazing dark fruit and classic cab at start and becomes more muted with time. Flavors are tart red fruit upon opening and evolve to earthy with some red fruit. Might be better right now out of a 750 ml.

91-92 poeng.

Deep ruby core with a bright purple rim. Medium viscosity. Moderate+ nose of graphite, dark fruits and forest floor. Develops more pure blackberry and some spice as well as coffee after some time. Super silky palate with well integrated tannins. Still good acidity left. Tart almost candied fruit without being sweet with a medium finish. Great value for the money. Good to drink now or at least another 3-4 years

Still slightly tight but reveals more upon decanting. At least 1 hour decant. A pretty well made wine, slightly heavy on ripe fruits but has good tannic backbone and oak treatment. Finish was medium with the oak slightly lingering on the back of the throat. Should be ready in about 5 years time after the worst go the tannins have settled down. With the current prices of 2012 Bordeaux, this is a much better buy than most 2011 or 2013 bords....

Just a taste from a guest. Solid style, drink now, proper structure could age for a bit too, but overall a little boring, not complex. Tasting notes consistent for smooth Left Bank, earth, dark fruit, pencil lead, etc, maybe a little more red fruit than expected for Pauillac.

Ditto my last review. This wine is made for drinking early yet has aging potential. Nose is pure forest, pine, evergreen and hints of red cherry fruit. Very pure and intact. Palate shows medium acid, light tannin and more tart cherry. Hints cherry blossom, fresh bark, tobacco and cigar. Well Made and truly on point.

Dark crimson color. Relatively muted nose of cherry, touch of tobacco and pine forest. Palate is medium to lean bodied, yet showing a lushness. Dark cherries, some evergreen, gravel, coco nib, pipe and dusty soil on the initial palate. A touch of heat on the back end. Well made, another 5-10 years is all that's necessary
An easy afternoon with close friends (@ PdV Pauillac and Pomerol): Beautiful bouquet with creamy cassis and vanilla. On the palate creamy and juicy cassis as well, some spiciness, a touch of sweetness, good acidity and sticky tannin. The wine is still much too young. And although not really locked, in this stage it lacks some luxury and finesse. Do not drink before 2022. Around 2025 is probably a wise moment to start. 90++ for today.

Drank over two days, alongside a 2012 Malescot St. Exupéry. Somewhat muted bouquet, thin, and oaky, though decidedly fresh on the pop-n-pour. With air, the wine added charm, elegance, and complexity. The bouquet revealed aromatic raspberry, pomegranate, cranberry, boysenberry, and blackberry notes and floral elements. The wine tasted like it smelled, with flair and vibrance. The thinness faded and was replaced by layers of berry, herbs (mint, rosemary, and marjoram), crushed rocks, and earth elements. Medium plus acid, light to medium minus fine tannins, vivacious finish.
The wine showed just as good or better on the second day, liveliness its calling card. This Pauillac out Margaux-ed the Margaux (2012 Malescot St. Exupéry) with its aromatics and freshness. Unlikely to be an extended ager, hold for two to three years and enjoy through 2022-2025.

(at Tocqueville - NYC) A nice, plump Pauillac that had all the classic cassis and cedar elements nicely in a place. There was a roundness to the wine that was a bit surprising given its youth. This is delicious and drinking very well this evening. A very nice restaurant choice. (91)

Intense, deep ruby. Ripe blackberry, with dark fruits and barnyard notes - leather developing with time. Medium body with silky, well integrated tannins. Great finesse and balance! Medium/Long, feminine finish of tobacco leaf. Drinking beautifully now.

This was surprisingly excellent. Drinking excellently now with well integrated tannins. Excellent fruit concentration. Blue and dark fruits on the nose, creamy vanilla notes from oak influence. Precision on the palate. Long finish. Amazing QPR.

Surprisingly open. Had an hour decant. Lovely cab fruit with a mix of barnyard, typical of this estate. Palate is smooth, fresh, with fine slightly hard tannins in background. Seems like a good wine that can be drunk now or held for 10yrs.

Out of a split in The Rosevelt in Shanghai. Nose is amazing dark fruit and classic cab at start and becomes more muted with time. Flavors are tart red fruit upon opening and evolve to earthy with some red fruit. Might be better right now out of a 750 ml.

Inky and dark. Nose is rich with black fruit,
Cassis, evergreen, pine forest and some veg. Medium bodied palate, with more berry fruit, hints of graphite and gravel. Medium tannin and plenty of years left. A bit short on the finish.

91-92 poeng.

Notes of cigar box and strawberries on the nose. The wine is tart with red fruits on the palate. Very enjoyable, should improve with time.

(Decanter FWE 2016) :: Alongside the Clerc Milon '10. A lifted nose, very floral but with an undercurrent of hide and soil. The palate is full and expressive; nice "bite", lingering finish. Very promising. 92+

Well
Made and truly on point.
