Friday, February 6, 2009 - The makeup bottle. Binny's was nice enough to replace an earlier, corked bottle, no questions asked. And I'm glad they did because this was terrific. Huge fruit up front --the "Skittles Rainbow," to borrow Gary Vaynerchuck's phrase-- with just enough of a pleasing green herbal streak (parsley?) to balance it and keep it out of simple fruit bomb territory. Not overly complex, but a really soft, plush wine. Hedonistic for sure. But balanced enough to pair well with short ribs. No heat at all, despite generous alc %. Only quibble is that there isn't much evident structure or length to it. And I'm not sure how much upside there is here. But this is very enjoyable now and will certainly be for years, at least, I'd think. Purchased on closeout for $29.99 and that is a terrific value. Normal ask is $45-ish, which puts it in the same neighborhood as some better Washington wines like Cayuse and Betz and well north of similar-quality producers like Reininger and Tamarack, imo. But in Napa, for instance, $45 for this quality would be a very good buy. 91.
