97 Points

Monday, October 16, 2023 - Thinking about buying more to lay down in light of the 98 to 100 rating from WA but wanted to get an idea where it’s at first. Slow ox overnight for around ten hours and decanted for another nine hours. Originally I was planning to drink it over three days to see how it developed but I didn’t get there - too good on day one. Dark ruby fruit - currants, blackberry, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with a beautiful purity and solid depth/concentration. Nice vibrant flavors of cassis, baking spices, cocoa, and a graphite component. Fairly long finish. Reminds me of a nice vintage of the Bevan Tench cab. No surprise of the 98-100 rating from WA. 96/97 for me at this really youthful stage. 100% cab.

10/16/2023 9:10:00 AM - Ya I was quite impressed with this wine despite its youth. I believe it has the potential to be the best G3 cab that Mike has produced with some more time. I’m going to verify with Mike but I think the higher-end cabs need around a year and the entry level around six months.

10/16/2023 10:53:00 AM - FYI, they recommended giving it 2 to 3 years. WA anticipated maturity also 2025 to 2045 which makes sense.

10/16/2023 10:30:00 PM - Badmonkey all of Myriad wines are good but I drink many better Dr. Cranes. I just drank a 2018 Myriad GIII Empyrian and it was the best GIII I have drank. Bought 2 of the regular 2021's but now your note makes me think about buying more. Only problem is I just bought 3 Paul Hobbs Dr. Crane and 2 Arrow & Branch Dr. Cranes from Benchmark so I am already over my fall/winter budget. It was tough this year with the 21's being such a great vintage and everybody raising prices significantly. So much wine so little money!

10/17/2023 12:50:00 AM - RayT, I hear you. I’ve cut back significantly on the purchase of higher-end wines in recent years because of where prices have gone - I have a hard time paying over $200 for a bottle and unfortunately that’s where most quality Beckstoffer wines have gone. However, I like to pick-up a six pack of higher-end wines for special occasions each year and that’s why I was curious about the 2021 Myriad G3 cab - the price wasn’t outrageous especially for a 98 to 100 rated Beckstoffer cab from a quality vintage with WA. I haven’t had the 2018 Myriad Empyrean yet - I may have try and pick-up a bottle. Paul Hobbs and Arrow & Branches Dr Crane cabs are obviously quality wines. It’s been a while since I’ve had them because of the price point. I continue to go back and forth on the purchase of a 2021 Bevan Dr Crane cab but after having the 2021 Myriad G3 cab I’m leaning towards buying a couple more bottles of that instead. Even Mike Smith recently stated that it’s probably the best G3 that he’s ever made. He also said that the 2023 vintage is shaping up very similar which is encouraging. Take care.

10/17/2023 6:38:00 AM - Badmonkey I got pretty good deals on the Crane's. Paid $229 for the 2019 A&B, and $218 for the 2018 Paul Hobbs from a friend who works for a distributor. 2 years ago I had $200 limit now it's $350 but rethinking that. Every time I have an amazing bottle I tell myself it is worth it but I also had a 2018 Law Audacious that was just fantastic the other night. I have really started to drink more in Paso Robles. Found wineries I like quite a bit: Turtle Rock, Clos Solene, L'Aventure, Law, Booker etc. that are quite good for under $100.

10/17/2023 6:51:00 AM - Those are good prices. I have a friend that’s pretty well off and he buys a mixed case of Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer cabs and also a case of Schrader’s Beckstoffer cabs every year. We use to get together quite a bit but then he moved away from the area. A shame. I’ll have to checkout those Paso Robles wineries. I went there around ten years ago and stayed at Justin Vineyards estate. I had some decent wines during our visit but I wasn’t wowed by anything, however, I also didn’t try any of those wineries. I found most of them quite rich/sweet and not much structure but I also didn’t do much homework before visiting. Thanks for the info.

10/19/2023 3:08:00 PM - I’ll be going with something else on Saturday - this wine needs some time but I’m looking forward to revisiting it in a couple years. Although I’m not overly pleased with the most recent NCAA allegations of illegal scouting/stealing play calls. Hopefully just a witch hunt but it doesn’t sound good. Take care.

10/19/2023 5:09:00 PM - Thanks for the review! I just received my 3-pack, but it sounds like this might be one to get more of! I was a bit miffed with the 2018 vintage as I opened one upon release and it was TIGHT, and one more recently and a bit more open, but still needs time IMHO. 2019 was much more open. Sounds like a slow ox and decant is the way to go with 2021, and glad to hear it was drinking well. I wonder if it'll shut down?

10/19/2023 5:29:00 PM - I hear you about the 2018 vintage - I’m still laying most of mine down for probably another year or two. I surprisingly really enjoyed the 2021 vintage after a long slow ox/decant. However, the Winery did recently recommend giving the 2021 vintage two to three years which makes sense. Take care.
