Friday, May 12, 2023 - Very pale ruby. This is a controversial style of Pinot Noir, for sure, but I think it is well done in the context of what it is. On the nose this smells sweet, like one is standing in a pastry kitchen, as it presents a mélange of red and black fruit aromas, ranging from fresh red cherries to black cherry jam to dried strawberries and blackberries; behind that there are notes of burnt toast, maple syrup, vanilla and oak spice. Medium to full bodied on the palate with velvety tannins, this is certainly rich and the alcoholic heat is something one cannot miss, but there's ample acidity here - more than I remember on other Sea Smoke Pinot Noirs - that gives this some sense of vitality and balance. This isn't for me, but others will surely swoon for it.
