5/15/2024 - Neecies wrote: NRLightly bretty on day one with high acid and no mid-palate depth. Unpleasantly raw, so set aside and re-tasted on day three on which we found the brett replaced with a lightly smokey element and otherwise, still too raw for current drinking. Even worse, I don't taste the potential for this to turn into something worth waiting for. Dumped the rest of the bottle on the rhododendrons. |

2009 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special SelectionNapa Valley more |
5/14/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRNot at all a fan of anything Wagner and I'm more interested in Bordeaux than California, but long ago I developed a soft spot for the Special Selects and even this warmer-than-usual vintage didn't disappoint. Showed its signature sweet blackberry/blueberry fruit and violets on both nose and palate, adding a touch of cola nut and mocha on the sweet, long finish with just a tad of heat. Tannins are fairly resolved, everything's in balance. |

2019 Martin Ranch Winery Thérèse Vineyards GSMSanta Clara Valley Red Rhone Blend more |
5/11/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRBurnished medium red color, this was one of my favorites at a neighborhood potluck tasting. Soft, gently evolved, and complex flavors of mixed fruit compotes represent this area at the southern base of the Santa Cruz Mountains very well. |

2015 Chaberton Estate Winery SyrahBritish Columbia VQA more |
5/11/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NR30ish years ago a French couple moved to BC and started a winery in the then-countryside 50 miles southeast of Vancouver among farms and horse ranches. They also opened a bistro. They named it Chaberton. My Europhile palate likes their wines quite a bit. This is the first one I've ever had with any age on it. It came across as fairly roasted, which is either because 2015 was hot (and it was) or because it wasn't decanted ahead of time (it wasn't) and given a chance to open up and show it's charms. We'll never know, but I'll bet on the latter. I liked it. |

2020 Yalumba The Y Series Shiraz/ViognierSouth Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah more |
5/11/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRLike the last reviewer, I was very impressed with this wine: "super solid" he said. I'm especially impressed--amazed, even--this morning realizing that whoever brought it to last night's potluck tasting of Rhone varietals probably only paid about $10 for it. Flavors were on point, it has definition and structure, and it's not the Aussie sugarbomb one expects at this price point. Well done, Yalumba, well done! |

2021 Michael-David Vineyards Syrah Sixth SenseLodi more |
5/11/2024 - Neecies Does not like this wine: NRBrought to a pot-luck tasting, this lives up to the Michael David reputation for sweet, heavy, high alcohol Lodi product. 15.6%, and you can taste it. I hated it. |

5/11/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: 85 pointsAt a pot luck tasting with a lot of sweet Spanish grenaches, this stood out for being merely decent. Medium bodied, dry and minerally. |

5/11/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRBased on someone else's bottle, in Oct '22 I thought this wine was on its way out but that was apparently just a bad bottle. One from my own stash last night was, if anything, still reaching new heights with roasted cherries, rocks funk, and leather notes. |

2018 Jean-Louis Dutraive (Domaine de la Grand'Cour) Fleurie Clos de la Grand'CourGamay more |
5/10/2024 - Neecies Does not like this wine: NROpened three days ago, found it both sappy and harsh, then retasted last night. In the days since it has lightened up and now shows a perfumey, floral nose with a strong, plastic-y Jolly Rancher Watermelon Candy midpalate. That's actually an improvement over the first impression earlier this week, but I don't like it. Fie on the 18's!!! |

5/10/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NROpened and tasted on Monday, found it reticent, so left in the fridge uncorked until Tuesday where it showed up brilliantly. If you own these, decant or wait. |

2023 Dominio de las Abejas Vino NaranjaBaja California White Blend more |
5/6/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRCloudy straw yellow color; a blend of chardonnay, sauv blanc, columbard, marsanne and viognier from a vineyard at 2000 ft elevation that used to be a bird sanctuary and as such has soil nutrients unlike anything in the surrounding area. Unfiltered with extended skin contact, it offers intriguing lavender, apple and white grapefruit notes with a slightly waxy texture. Alcohol only 12%. I was so enchanted I bought several. $30 retail. |

5/6/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRIn-store tasting. Very en-pointe 80/20 blend of cabernet and syrah, and both grapes show well in my little tasting pour. Great QPR for $24, and I bought some. |

2021 Descendientes de Charles Martinez Ensemble de la FamiliaValle de Ojos Negros Red Blend more |
5/6/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRIn-store tasting. 40% malbec and 30% each cabernet and syrah. Medium red fruit about which I mysteriously only noted "not floral or candied" which apparently came from my general aversion to Malbec. I didn't write anything else, but I did buy a bottle so that's a compliment in itself. |

5/6/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRDidn't just like it, loved it. Light to medium red in color with bolder body than appearance and pomegranate, raspberry, and Constant Comment tea flavors. Todd Alexander hits it out of the park again. |

2018 Devison Vintners Above the Flood Boushey VineyardYakima Valley Red Rhone Blend more |
5/6/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRHasn't really changed since Clark Griswold's TN two years ago. Uncorked on Thursday and only tasted last night, it's very dark, bold and primary, a GSM in which currently the Grenache is the least noticeable of the three components. Has a loooong future ahead of it. |

4/28/2024 - Neecies wrote: NRCork was lightly depressed and crumbled on removal. Color: a brownish maroon. Musty, old nose. On the palate, notes of the canned cherries my grandmother loved when I was a kid plus spent coffee grounds. Root beer, another childhood favorite, on the finish. No freshness whatsoever but it had astonishing acidity for it's age. Enough, in fact, for us to enjoy the entire bottle. |

2017 Domaine Borgeot Puligny-Montrachet Les MeixChardonnay more |
4/24/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRLikeable because the acidity is there, but it otherwise lacks the qualities I love about Puligny-Montrachet and instead has bright color and ripeness closer to California chardonnay albeit higher-end California chardonnay. Would blend right into a line-up with the likes of Failla and Ramey. |

2020 J. Rochioli Sauvignon BlancRussian River Valley more |
4/20/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRLast of six bottles drunk over three years. A little riper/more advanced in color and flavor than the first five, so less crisp and herbaceous. Call it good to very good but not outstanding. |

2013 Domaine Armelle et Bernard Rion Clos Vougeot Vieilles VignesClos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
4/20/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRDecanted for two hours. Medium taupe-y red color. Suitably aged, on the savory side, oak better integrated than it was as a youngster, showed well with grilled veal chops and creamy shitake mushroom sauce. |

4/17/2024 - Neecies Likes this wine: NRInky black, and picking up some soy sauce notes that foretell the end of days but still, a fun and friendly drink to share with an old friend who remembered this wine from our days together 30 years ago. |
